PART 3: THE ACCOUNT HE NEVER KNEW ABOUT

Dominic stood beside the SUV for almost five minutes without moving.

The woman from the recovery company had already shown him the paperwork twice.

His name was nowhere.

Not as the owner.

Not as the primary holder.

Not even as someone with authority over the vehicle.

He kept staring at the documents like the letters might rearrange themselves if he looked long enough.

“This has to be a mistake,” he finally said.

The woman shook her head.

“No, Mr. Dominic. The registration is very clear.”

That sentence bothered him more than anything else.

Not because he had lost the SUV.

Because someone had finally said the truth out loud.

It was never his.

He had simply been allowed to use it.

Dominic grabbed his phone again.

Still no answer.

For years, he had known exactly how to get my attention.

A cold tone.

A disappointed sigh.

A reminder that he was the one everyone depended on.

But this time, none of it worked.

Because I wasn’t sitting at home waiting for him to come back and explain why I was wrong.

I was sitting beside Leo’s crib, watching my son sleep.

And I was thinking about every moment I ignored.

Every time Dominic made decisions without asking me.

Every time he introduced my father’s success as if it was his own.

Every time someone complimented him on his “amazing life” and he accepted the praise without correcting them.

My phone rang again.

Dominic.

This time, I answered.

“What?”

My voice sounded different.

Even I noticed it.

There was no fear.

No urgency.

Just exhaustion.

“What is happening?” he demanded.

“You need to fix this.”

I looked at Leo.

Five days old.

A tiny person who had already taught me something important.

Love was not proven by words.

It was proven by showing up.

“I don’t need to fix anything,” I said.

A pause.

Then a sharp laugh.

“Are you serious right now?”

“Yes.”

“You’re angry because I had lunch?”

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“No, Dominic.”

“Then what?”

“You still don’t understand.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“You think this is about the SUV.”

“It’s not.”

“You think this is about today.”

“It’s not.”

His silence told me he was listening.

“This is about every time you made me feel like I should be grateful for things that were already mine.”

For the first time, Dominic didn’t have an immediate answer.

Because he knew.

Somewhere deep down, he knew.

But admitting it would mean admitting that the entire image he created was built on a lie.

“Who helped you with this?” he asked again.

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same question.

The same disbelief.

“You really think I couldn’t do anything without you?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Yes, it is.”

The room became quiet.

Then Dominic lowered his voice.

“Come home. We’ll talk about this.”

I looked around the house.

My house.

The house he told everyone he provided.

The house he used to impress his friends.

The house where I spent months building a nursery while he complained about meetings.

“No,” I said.

A long silence followed.

“What do you mean, no?”

“I mean I’m not coming back to pretend nothing happened.”

His breathing became heavier.

“You’re my wife.”

“And you’re the father of my son.”

I paused.

“But being my husband never gave you the right to forget that I was a person before I became your wife.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Dominic said something that made my entire body go cold.

“You should ask your father what he really left you.”

I froze.

Because that wasn’t a random sentence.

That was a warning.

A warning that meant Dominic knew something I didn’t.

After the call ended, I immediately opened the locked drawer in my office.

The drawer I hadn’t touched since my father passed.

Inside were old documents, letters, and one sealed envelope with my name written across the front.

I had always believed it was just another memory from him.

But now, with Dominic’s words echoing in my mind, my hands started shaking.

I opened the envelope.

The first line made my heart stop.

“Dear Emma, if you are reading this, it means someone has finally made you question who truly stands beside you.”

I read the next sentence.

And suddenly, I understood why Dominic had been so desperate to control everything.

Because my father hadn’t only left me money.

He had left me a secret.

A secret Dominic had spent years trying to keep buried.

And on the final page was one name I never expected to see.

His.
