Adrian stood frozen in the middle of the room.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked completely lost.
Not angry.
Not impatient.
Just afraid.
“Vanny…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Where is our baby?”
I looked at him quietly.
The man in front of me was the same man who had held my hand during our wedding ceremony twenty-four hours earlier.
The same man who had promised that I was the only person he would ever choose.
And the same man who had walked into a government office the next morning and legally married another woman.
I pulled my hand away.
“You should ask yourself that question.”
His face changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the baby you were worried about now was the same baby you ignored yesterday.”
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
He stepped closer.
“Vanny, I didn’t know you were going to do this.”
I smiled faintly.
“That’s the point, Adrian.”
He stopped.
“You didn’t know because you never asked.”
The silence became unbearable.
He looked at the hospital document again.
His fingers trembled slightly.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
His eyes widened.
“Yesterday?”
“Yes.”
“The day I married Jessica?”
I didn’t answer.
He understood.
For several seconds, he just stood there.
Then he grabbed his hair.
“No…”
I had imagined this moment many times.
I imagined him apologizing.
I imagined him realizing what he had done.
I imagined him finally understanding that I was not someone who would wait forever.
But when it happened, I felt nothing.
Only exhaustion.
“You chose her.”
Adrian looked up.
“Vanny, listen to me.”
“No.”
“I need you to understand why.”
“I already understand.”
“You don’t.”
His voice became desperate.
“Jessica saved my life.”
I looked at him.
“And I gave you my entire life.”
He went silent.
For three years, I had been the woman standing behind him.
When his company struggled, I stayed awake with him.
When his father rejected his decisions, I was the one telling him he could succeed.
When he was sick, I was the one sitting beside his bed.
But Jessica only had to sacrifice one thing.
And suddenly she became the woman everyone wanted to protect.
“You married me yesterday,” I said.
“Yes.”
“And today you married her.”
“Because she needed help.”
“And what did I need?”
His lips parted.
Nothing came out.
That was my answer.
His phone rang again.
Jessica.
He looked at the screen.
A year ago, that simple action would have hurt me.
Now it only confirmed what I already knew.
He still chose her first.
He rejected the call.
That surprised me.
“Vanny…”
I stood slowly.
The pain in my body reminded me that I was still recovering.
But I refused to let him see weakness.
“I’m leaving.”
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
“I’m leaving this house.”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
“You can’t just leave.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
Because for once, he had no prepared explanation.
“You’re my wife.”
I laughed quietly.
“Which one?”
His face turned pale.
The words hit harder than any argument.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But you did.”
“I thought everything could stay the same.”
“That was your mistake.”
He stepped forward.
“I can fix this.”
“No, Adrian.”
I picked up my suitcase.
“You can’t fix something you refused to admit was broken.”
The next morning, I received a call from Elena.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
Her voice was different.
No arrogance.
No certainty.
Only hesitation.
“Vanny.”

“What?”
There was a long pause.
“I didn’t know.”
I closed my eyes.
“Didn’t know what?”
“That you would actually leave.”
I almost smiled.
Of course.
They all believed I would stay.
Because I always had.
Elena lowered her voice.
“Adrian hasn’t slept.”
“That’s not my problem anymore.”
“Jessica told him something.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She said the reason she needed Adrian so much was because she had no one else.”
I waited.
“And?”
Elena hesitated.
“She lied.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?”
“She didn’t lose everything the way Adrian believed.”
The room became silent.
“Elena.”
“I found something in the family records.”
“What?”
Her voice dropped.
“Jessica Zhang was never abandoned by her fiancé.”
I froze.
“Then why did Adrian marry her?”
“That’s the problem.”
A pause.
“Because someone made him believe she was dying and had only one wish.”
I looked out the window.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?”
Elena didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Vanny… the person who arranged everything was someone from your side.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Before Elena could continue, another notification appeared on my phone.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
You think Adrian betrayed you. You don’t know the real reason he chose Jessica.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
This time with a photo attached.
A photo taken before my wedding.
Adrian.
Jessica.
And someone standing between them.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had smiled at me while helping me prepare for my wedding day.
Someone who had told me:
“Don’t worry. Adrian loves you.”
I looked at the photo again.
And finally understood.
My marriage had not been destroyed the morning Adrian married Jessica.
It had been destroyed long before that.
And the person who started it all had been standing beside me the entire time.
