PART 2: THE MAN WHO REALIZED SHE HAD REALLY LEFT

For three days, Ethan Shen waited.

He was certain Victoria would return.

She always did.

That was the pattern of seven years.

A fight.

Silence.

His cold attitude.

Then Victoria would appear at his door with a soft voice and an apology.

Sometimes she brought food.

Sometimes she bought gifts.

Sometimes she simply hugged him and said:

“Let’s not fight anymore.”

Ethan believed that was love.

He believed because she always came back, she would always stay.

So when his phone stopped receiving her messages, he didn’t panic.

At first.

On his birthday morning, he woke up expecting a call.

A message.

Anything.

But nothing appeared.

The first hour, he ignored it.

The second hour, he checked his phone repeatedly.

By noon, his expression had changed.

His friends noticed.

“Where is Victoria?”

Ethan forced a smile.

“She is probably still angry.”

Someone laughed.

“Impossible. She never stays angry for long.”

Those words made him uncomfortable.

Because this time…

She was.

That afternoon, he opened their chat.

The last message was still there.

From one month ago.

“I was wrong. Please don’t ignore me anymore.”

He had replied:

“Good.”

At the time, he thought he was winning.

He thought he was teaching her a lesson.

Now, staring at the empty conversation, he suddenly felt something strange.

Fear.

He called her.

The number didn’t exist.

He frowned.

He called again.

Same result.

For the first time, Ethan stood up.

“Where are you?”

No answer.

He went to her workplace.

The receptionist looked surprised when she saw him.

“Mr. Shen?”

“Where is Victoria?”

The woman hesitated.

“She doesn’t work here anymore.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“She resigned three days ago.”

Three days.

Exactly the day after his post.

Exactly the day she disappeared.

“Did she tell you where she went?”

“No.”

Ethan stood there silently.

The woman looked at him carefully.

“Did something happen?”

He didn’t answer.

Because suddenly he realized something terrifying.

Victoria hadn’t threatened to leave.

She hadn’t tried to make him jealous.

She hadn’t waited for him to chase her.

She had simply left.

That night, he returned to the apartment.

The place felt different.

Empty.

Even though most of the furniture was still there.

Because he finally noticed all the things she had brought into his life.

The small plants by the window.

The kitchen supplies.

The blankets.

The pictures.

The little details he never cared about.

On the table was a notebook.

He opened it.

Inside were years of expenses.

Rent.

Electricity.

Food.

Repairs.

Gifts for his family.

His expression became complicated.

He always thought he provided everything.

But he never realized…

Victoria had been carrying a different part of their life.

The part nobody saw.

His phone rang.

It was his mother.

“Where is Victoria?”

Ethan stayed silent.

“She left?”

His mother immediately understood.

“How could you let her leave?”

He frowned.

“Mom, don’t blame me.”

A pause.

Then his mother said something that made him freeze.

“Do you know what she told me the day before she left?”

“What?”

“She said she finally understood something.”

His hand tightened.

“What?”

“That being loved shouldn’t feel like begging.”

The room became silent.

That sentence followed him all night.

The next morning, Ethan went through his social media.

Then he saw it.

The post.

The photo.

The comments.

And his own words.

“When doesn’t she come back alone to beg me?”

He stared at the sentence.

Suddenly, it looked disgusting.

Not confident.

Not powerful.

Just cruel.

He remembered Victoria’s face during their last argument.

He remembered the dozens of missed calls.

The messages.

The desperation.

And he remembered how satisfied he felt when she came back.

Because he thought he had proved she couldn’t leave.

But he was wrong.

She didn’t come back because she couldn’t live without him.

She came back because she loved him.

And when that love disappeared…

So did she.

A week later, Ethan finally found her.

Not because Victoria contacted him.

Because someone recognized her name in a new city.

He arrived at the old apartment building in the evening.

Sixth floor.

Apartment 601.

He raised his hand to knock.

Then he stopped.

Because from inside, he heard laughter.

A woman’s laughter.

Victoria’s.

He had not heard that sound in months.

The door opened.

Not Victoria.

A man.

Gabriel Cruz.

The neighbor.

Ethan’s expression immediately changed.

“Who are you?”

Gabriel looked at him calmly.

“Her neighbor.”

Before Ethan could say anything, Victoria appeared behind him.

She froze.

Not because she missed him.

Because she never expected to see him again.

“Victoria.”

Ethan’s voice was lower than before.

“I came to take you home.”

She looked at him.

Then she looked at Gabriel.

The old Victoria would have explained.

The old Victoria would have worried about his misunderstanding.

The old Victoria would have tried to prove her innocence.

But that woman no longer existed.

“I’m not going back.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“Because of him?”

Victoria smiled slightly.

“No.”

“Because of me.”

The answer left him speechless.

For the first time, Ethan understood.

The person he lost wasn’t waiting somewhere for him to apologize.

She had already built a new life.

A life where he was no longer the center.

And the hardest part for Ethan Shen was realizing…

The woman who spent seven years chasing after him…

Was now the one person he could no longer reach.
