I stood frozen in the security room.
For several seconds, I couldn’t even breathe.
On the screen, Chloe’s hand was still around Sofia’s wrist.
My six-year-old daughter wasn’t crying.
That was what scared me the most.
She had learned not to cry.
She had learned that tears only made Chloe angrier.
“Enough.”
My voice came out low.
Hector looked at me.
“Mr. Vance…”
I pointed at the screen.
“Keep recording.”
I needed every second.
Every word.
Every action.
Because this wasn’t just about anger anymore.
This was about proving what had been happening while I wasn’t home.
On the monitor, Marisol gently pulled Sofia behind her.
“Miss Chloe, please let go.”
Chloe laughed.
“You really think you have authority here?”
She released Sofia’s wrist but stepped closer to Marisol.
“You know what your problem is? You forgot that you’re just an employee.”
Marisol stayed silent.
But I noticed something.
Her hands were shaking.
She was scared.
Not for herself.
For my daughters.
“You’ve been filling their heads with nonsense,” Chloe continued. “Making them think you’re some kind of replacement mother.”
Valeria suddenly spoke.
“She never said that.”
Her voice was small.
But firm.
Chloe turned toward her.
“What did you say?”
Valeria lowered her eyes.
“Marisol never tried to replace Mom.”
The room became silent.
Even through the screen, I felt the weight of those words.
My wife had been gone for three years.
And I had spent so much time trying to build a new life that I never noticed my daughters were still protecting the memory of the old one.
Chloe’s expression changed.
“You two are very ungrateful.”
She walked toward the shelf and grabbed Sofia’s stuffed rabbit.
“This thing is going in the trash.”
Sofia’s face changed immediately.
“No!”
It was the first time she raised her voice.
“Please don’t throw it away. Mommy gave it to me.”
Chloe looked annoyed.
“Your mother isn’t here anymore.”
The sentence hit me like a punch.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
Hector looked at me.
“Sir…”
I didn’t answer.
Because on the screen, Marisol moved.
She took the rabbit from Chloe’s hand.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“That belongs to Sofia.”
Chloe stared at her.
“Excuse me?”
“I said it belongs to Sofia.”
For the first time, Marisol’s voice wasn’t gentle.
It was protective.
“You can dislike me. You can insult me. But you will not hurt these children.”
Chloe smiled coldly.
“You really don’t understand your position.”
Then she reached into her purse.
She pulled out her phone.
And my entire body went cold.
Because I recognized the screen.
It was a photo of a document.
A legal document.
A document with my signature.

“What are you showing them?” Marisol asked.
Chloe looked at the girls.
“Something your father should have told you.”
I leaned forward.
“What is that?”
Hector enlarged the image from the security system.
My heart stopped.
It was a custody agreement.
But not the one I had signed.
The signature looked similar.
Almost identical.
Almost.
“Impossible…”
I had never given Chloe legal authority over my daughters.
Never.
Then another notification appeared on Hector’s screen.
A file transfer.
Someone had accessed my private legal folder three days ago.
Someone inside the house.
Someone who had my password.
I looked at the camera feed again.
Chloe was smiling.
Not like my fiancée.
Not like the woman who hugged my daughters in front of me.
Like someone who had already won.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
It was my attorney.
I answered immediately.
“Alexander, where are you?”
“I’m at home.”
There was silence.
Then his voice changed.
“You need to listen carefully.”
“What happened?”
“The custody documents you asked me to prepare last year…”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Yes?”
“They were modified.”
A chill ran through my entire body.
“Modified by who?”
My attorney hesitated.
Then said the words that changed everything:
“Alexander… the person who accessed your files wasn’t Chloe.”
I looked back at the monitor.
At Marisol.
At my daughters.
At Chloe.
“Then who was it?”
The answer came after three seconds.
And it was the last person I expected.
“Your late wife’s brother.”
I stopped breathing.
Because my daughters’ nightmare wasn’t just about my fiancée.
Someone from my past had returned.
And they had been planning this long before Chloe entered my life.
