PART 2: THE SECRET SOPHIE NEVER WANTED TO REVEAL.

—Is this Claire Bennett?

The voice on the other end of the phone belonged to a woman.

I didn’t recognize the number.

—Yes. Who is this?

There was a short silence.

As if the person was gathering courage.

—My name is Sophie Laurent.

My hand froze around the coffee cup.

Sophie.

The same woman whose name I had heard the night before.

The woman who was carrying my husband’s child.

—What do you want?

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

She took a deep breath.

—I need to talk to you before Julian tells you his version of the story.

I looked down at my notes on the table.

Eleven trips.

Dates.

Lies.

—Why should I listen to you?

Her voice trembled slightly.

—Because I didn’t know the whole truth either.

That caught my attention.

—Explain.

Sophie took a few seconds before answering.

—Julian told me you were separated.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The oldest excuse.

—He said you were only still married because of family reasons. That you were already preparing the divorce.

My fingers tightened around the pen.

—And you believed him?

—Yes.

Her answer came immediately.

—Because he showed me documents.

Documents.

That word made my body tense.

—What documents?

—A supposed separation agreement. Messages that made it look like you had already accepted ending the marriage.

I stayed silent.

Because I had never seen those documents.

I had never agreed to separate.

Then I understood something.

Julian wasn’t just cheating on me.

He had created an entire story.

—Sophie, why are you calling me now?

She let out a slow breath.

—Because yesterday I heard what his mother said.

—What did she say?

Her voice lowered.

—That after the baby was born, you would raise him.

A cold feeling ran through me.

—And you thought that was normal?

—No.

A pause.

—Because I never agreed to that.

I looked out the coffee shop window.

The street was exactly the same.

People were walking.

Cars were passing.

But my entire life had changed overnight.

—Then what did Julian want?

Sophie answered quietly:

—He wanted you to raise our baby.

—Why?

Her response came slowly.

—Because his family always talked about you as the perfect wife.

—The woman who cooks.

—The woman who takes care of everyone.

—The woman who never leaves.

Every sentence felt like another wound.

For ten years, they never saw me as a person.

They saw me as something useful.

—And what was your role?

Sophie was silent.

Finally, she said:

—I thought Julian loved me.

—But yesterday I realized he only saw me as someone who could give him a child.

I looked at my reflection in the window.

The woman staring back looked calm.

But inside, something had finally broken.

—I need proof.

She didn’t hesitate.

—I have messages.

—Photos.

—Audio recordings.

—Everything.

My heart started beating faster.

—Why are you helping me?

Sophie answered:

—Because if he could lie to you for ten years…

—He can lie to me for another ten.

After hanging up, I sat there for a long time.

I didn’t cry.

I had already cried enough during six years of trying to have a child with a man who apparently never needed me to become the mother of his children.

He only needed me to be useful.

That afternoon, I went home.

Julian was sitting in the living room watching television.

When he saw me, he smiled.

The same smile.

The same fake calm.

—Feeling better?

I nodded.

—Yes.

He walked over and kissed my forehead.

—I knew you just needed some rest.

I looked at him.

I thought about every time I had trusted him.

Every time I defended him.

Every time his family laughed at me in German while I smiled.

—Julian.

—Yes?

—Do you still want to have children with me?

His expression changed for half a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Then he smiled.

—Of course I do.

Liar.

That night, while he slept, I opened his computer.

Not because I wanted to invade his privacy.

But because I needed to know how far his lies went.

I found a hidden folder.

The name:

“Family Plan.”

My hands started shaking.

Inside were documents.

Messages.

Photos.

And one file that made my breathing stop.

It was a copy of a letter.

A letter that was supposedly written by me.

A letter where I agreed to raise Julian and Sophie’s child.

But something was wrong.

The signature.

The date.

Everything looked perfect.

Except for one small detail.

The signature wasn’t mine.

And then I understood.

Julian wasn’t waiting for my agreement.

He had already prepared everything to make it look like I gave it.

But what he didn’t know…

Was that someone else had seen those documents before I did.

And that person was about to destroy Julian’s entire plan in front of his family.
