Part 2: The Woman He Left To Die Returned With The Truth.

I don’t know how long I crawled through the forest.

Minutes.

Maybe an hour.

Time had stopped making sense.

Every sound around me felt distant. The wind moving through the trees. The rustling leaves beneath my hands. The faint echo of my own heartbeat fighting to continue.

Carter thought the forest would erase me.

He thought darkness would hide his crime.

But he forgot one thing.

I was a survivor before I was ever his wife.

My fingers reached the remains of the abandoned campfire.

The ashes were cold, but the small emergency supplies left behind by careless hikers were enough to confirm what I already suspected.

Carter had planned everything.

The location.

The timing.

The story he would tell everyone.

A tragic medical emergency.

A grieving husband.

A fifty-million-dollar payout.

But what Carter didn’t understand was that poison was not just about causing harm.

It was about evidence.

And evidence always left a trail.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to focus.

The soup.

The symptoms.

The timing.

Everything pointed in one direction.

He had studied enough to make me disappear.

But not enough to make me disappear perfectly.

My hand shook as I reached for my phone.

The screen was cracked from the fall.

One percent battery.

No signal.

Of course.

Carter had thought of that too.

But he had underestimated one detail.

The housewarming party.

Dozens of guests.

Dozens of witnesses.

And every single one of them had seen me eat that soup.

They had seen Carter act like a loving husband.

They had seen him panic.

They had seen him call for help.

The perfect performance.

Except perfect performances require perfect timing.

And Carter had left too quickly.

I forced myself upright.

My legs barely responded.

But I moved.

Because I knew something Carter didn’t.

Vanessa was not the first person he had betrayed.

Three months before our wedding, I had found something strange in Carter’s financial records.

A hidden account.

Large transfers.

Payments to someone whose name I didn’t recognize.

When I confronted him, he smiled and kissed my forehead.

“You’re overthinking things.”

That was the first lie.

I ignored it.

Then came the second.

And the third.

I convinced myself every marriage had secrets.

I convinced myself love meant patience.

I convinced myself the man I loved was worth trusting.

Until tonight.

Until he left me in the woods.

A distant sound suddenly cut through the trees.

An engine.

My heart stopped.

For one terrifying moment, I thought Carter had returned.

But the vehicle wasn’t his.

The headlights appeared between the trees.

A truck.

Someone was coming.

I collapsed onto the ground and used the last strength I had to wave.

The truck stopped.

A man jumped out.

“Are you hurt?”

I tried to speak.

My voice barely existed.

“Phone…”

He immediately grabbed his phone.

“Calling emergency services.”

As he knelt beside me, I looked up at the sky.

And for the first time that night, I smiled.

Because Carter believed I was gone.

He believed he had already won.

He didn’t know someone had just found me alive.

He didn’t know the woman he abandoned was about to become the one person who could destroy him.

By sunrise, Carter was already telling everyone his story.

According to him, I had become sick suddenly.

According to him, he had desperately tried to save me.

According to him, he was a devastated husband who had lost the love of his life.

The police believed him.

At first.

Until they arrived at the hospital.

The doctor walked into my room holding a file.

“You need to prepare yourself,” she said.

I looked at her.

“What happened?”

She placed the file on the table.

“We found something in your system.”

I already knew.

“The poison.”

She nodded.

“But that’s not the only thing.”

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?”

She opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph taken from Carter’s phone.

My face went pale.

Because the picture wasn’t from tonight.

It was from six months earlier.

A picture of me sleeping.

Taken without my knowledge.

And underneath it was a message.

A message sent to Vanessa.

“She won’t be a problem much longer.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands began shaking.

Because suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t an impulsive murder attempt.

It wasn’t about the insurance money.

Carter had been planning my disappearance for months.

And the next file the doctor showed me revealed the one thing I never expected.

Carter didn’t just want my money.

He wanted something I had hidden from him.

Something worth far more than fifty million dollars.
