PART 2: THE HOUSE DANIEL GAVE AWAY WAS NEVER HIS TO GIVE

The moment I stepped into the recovery center, I felt like I could finally breathe again.

Not because the pain was gone.

Not because my marriage was saved.

But because, for the first time in years, I was somewhere that my suffering was not treated as an inconvenience.

The nurses checked my wound immediately.

The doctor looked through my medical records and frowned.

“Mrs. Evans, why did you leave the hospital without proper recovery support?”

I lowered my eyes.

“Because my husband said it was unnecessary.”

The doctor looked at Emma sleeping beside me.

Then she asked softly:

“Does your husband understand how dangerous this period is after surgery?”

I smiled bitterly.

“I don’t think he understands much about me anymore.”

That evening, Daniel called dozens of times.

I didn’t answer.

Then came messages.

“Where are you?”

“Why did you leave?”

“Laura, don’t make this bigger than it is.”

The same words.

Always the same words.

As if my pain was something I created.

As if I was the problem because I finally stopped accepting it.

The next morning, my lawyer arrived.

She placed several documents on the table.

“Laura, I reviewed your property records.”

I looked up.

“What did you find?”

She opened the folder.

“The house Daniel gave to Chloe…”

My hands tightened.

“Yes?”

“It was purchased with your money.”

I froze.

“What?”

She pushed the documents toward me.

“Before your pregnancy, you transferred your personal savings and investment profits into the account used for the house purchase.”

I stared at the papers.

The house.

The house I had saved for.

The house I had sacrificed for.

The house Daniel told everyone was his achievement.

My lawyer continued:

“Your name was removed from the public documents because Daniel claimed it was easier for the mortgage process.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“He lied.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me seriously.

“And there is more.”

She handed me another document.

Financial transfers.

Payments.

Receipts.

For the past year, Daniel had been using our family funds to support Chloe.

Her rent.

Her medical bills.

Leo’s expenses.

I closed my eyes.

The pain was different now.

Not the pain of betrayal.

The pain of finally seeing clearly.

Daniel had not accidentally forgotten me.

He had deliberately placed me second.

My phone rang.

It was Daniel.

This time, I answered.

“Laura.”

His voice sounded tired.

“Where are you?”

“At the recovery center.”

A pause.

“Why?”

I looked at Emma.

“Because someone needed to take care of me.”

Silence.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I can take care of you.”

I almost laughed.

“Daniel, you left me six floors away from an elevator after surgery.”

“That was temporary.”

“You gave our house to another woman.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“You let another child call you Dad while ignoring your own daughter.”

His breathing changed.

“Laura…”

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“That’s the first time I understand something.”

“What?”

“You didn’t lose your family because of Chloe.”

Silence.

“You lost it because you stopped choosing us.”

He didn’t answer.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Three days later, Daniel came to the recovery center.

But he wasn’t alone.

Chloe was with him.

She held Leo’s hand.

“I think we need to talk,” Daniel said.

I looked at them.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“No?”

“You came here because you want me to accept something.”

Chloe immediately looked hurt.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I looked at her.

“But you accepted everything that hurt me.”

Her face changed.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Laura, Chloe and Leo need stability.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

He looked confused.

“So you understand?”

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“That’s why I’m choosing stability too.”

I placed the divorce documents on the table.

Daniel stared at them.

“You already filed?”

“Yes.”

His face turned pale.

“You’re serious?”

I looked at him.

“For six years, I carried this marriage.”

A tear slipped down my face.

“But I refuse to carry it alone anymore.”

Then something unexpected happened.

Leo, who had been standing beside Chloe, looked at Daniel.

“Dad…”

Daniel immediately softened.

“Yes?”

The little boy pointed toward Emma.

“Is she your baby too?”

The room became silent.

Daniel froze.

Chloe’s expression changed.

Because children ask questions adults spend years avoiding.

Leo looked confused.

“You said I could call you Dad.”

He looked at Emma.

“But she calls you Dad too?”

Daniel had no answer.

And for the first time, Chloe looked afraid.

Because she knew.

The truth was finally standing in front of everyone.

The next morning, my lawyer received an anonymous envelope.

Inside was a copy of an old hospital document.

A document from the day Emma was born.

And written at the bottom was a note that made my blood run cold:

“Daniel Evans requested the paternity test be delayed.”

I stared at the paper.

Why would he hide the results?

Why would he refuse to know the truth about his own daughter?

Then my lawyer looked at me and said:

“Laura, there is something else.”

“He already knew the result.”

I felt my heart stop.

“What result?”

She slowly turned the page.

And the answer revealed a secret Daniel had hidden since the day Emma was born.

A secret that would finally explain why he had spent the last four days pushing his own daughter away…
