PART 2: THE WIFE HE TRIED TO DESTROY BECAME THE WOMAN WHO TOOK EVERYTHING BACK

Mateo Ferrer thought the worst moment of his life was watching Claudia get arrested.

He was wrong.

The worst moment came twenty minutes later, when my lawyer Daniel arrived and placed a folder on the table.

A folder that contained everything Mateo thought I would never discover.

The accident was only the beginning.

Daniel looked at me seriously.

“Elena, are you sure you want to proceed?”

I looked at Mateo.

My husband.

The man who had once promised to protect me.

The man who had just tried to send me to prison for another woman.

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then we need to move quickly.”

Mateo finally reacted.

“Move quickly? Elena, don’t be ridiculous.”

I turned toward him.

“Ridiculous?”

His face changed.

Because he realized I was no longer the woman who waited for his explanations.

“I almost lost everything tonight because of you.”

He stepped closer.

“Claudia made a mistake. I was only trying to help her.”

I smiled.

“Help her?”

I pointed at the police report.

“You wanted me to confess to a crime she committed.”

Mateo became silent.

Because there was no excuse left.

Then Daniel opened the folder.

“The second issue is the company.”

Mateo’s expression immediately changed.

“What about the company?”

Daniel placed several documents on the table.

“During the last four months, there have been unauthorized transfers from Grupo Valdés accounts.”

Mateo froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible when someone believes nobody will investigate.”

I watched his face carefully.

For years, Mateo had acted like my father’s company belonged to him.

After my father’s death, he convinced me to let him manage everything.

He told me:

“Elena, you don’t need to worry about business. Let me take care of you.”

I believed him.

Because I loved him.

But love had made me blind.

Daniel continued.

“Several payments were made to companies connected to Claudia Ríos.”

Mateo’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

Daniel placed another document in front of him.

“And we also found evidence that someone attempted to transfer controlling shares of the company.”

Silence.

I looked at Mateo.

“Did you think I would never check?”

He looked at me with anger.

“You don’t understand how complicated business is.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You didn’t marry me because you loved me.”

“You married me because my last name opened doors.”

The words hit him harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Mateo lowered his voice.

“Elena, don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Destroy everything we built.”

I laughed softly.

“Everything we built?”

I looked at Claudia’s Ferrari accident report.

“Mateo, you tried to destroy me to save her.”

“And now you are asking me to save you?”

He had no answer.

The next morning, the news spread everywhere.

The daughter of Alejandro Valdés had exposed a fraud attempt inside her own company.

The man everyone thought would become the next leader of Grupo Valdés was under investigation.

And Claudia Ríos was no longer the innocent assistant everyone believed her to be.

But there was one thing nobody expected.

Mateo didn’t fight the accusations.

He didn’t deny everything.

Instead, he came to my house.

Alone.

Without his expensive suit.

Without his confidence.

For the first time, he looked like an ordinary man.

“Elena.”

I didn’t invite him in.

“What do you want?”

His eyes were red.

“I made mistakes.”

I stayed silent.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

He looked away.

“Of never being enough.”

I almost laughed.

Because that was the first honest thing he had ever said.

“You weren’t afraid of failing, Mateo.”

“You were afraid of being exposed.”

He looked at me.

“I still love you.”

Those words would have meant everything months ago.

Now they meant nothing.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

He waited.

“I could have forgiven betrayal.”

“I could have forgiven a mistake.”

“But you looked at me, your wife, the woman who trusted you…”

“And you decided I was the easiest person to sacrifice.”

Mateo’s eyes filled with regret.

But regret was not love.

Regret was only what people felt after losing something valuable.

“I want another chance.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The answer was simple.

And for the first time, I felt free.

Three months later, Grupo Valdés returned stronger than ever.

I became the official CEO.

The woman everyone thought was protected by her father’s name proved she could protect herself.

As for Mateo…

He lost his position.

His reputation.

And the woman he destroyed his marriage for.

Because Claudia eventually revealed the truth during the investigation.

She had never loved him.

She only saw him as a way into the Valdés empire.

The same way he had once seen me.

One evening, I stood in my father’s office looking at the city lights.

Daniel asked me:

“Do you regret trusting him?”

I smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I had never trusted him, I would never have learned how strong I could become.”

My phone received one final message from Mateo.

“I lost everything because of one mistake.”

I looked at the words for a long time.

Then I replied:

“No, Mateo.”

“You lost everything because you thought I was the one thing you could sacrifice.”

And that was the last message I ever sent him.

Because some marriages don’t end when people stop loving each other.

Some marriages end when one person finally remembers their own worth.
