PART 2: THE SECRET THAT DESTROYED THE FAMILY HE CHOSE OVER US

The auditorium remained silent after the director’s accusation.

Hundreds of people were watching.

The cameras were still recording.

And for the first time in thirteen years, Santiago Montero had nowhere to hide.

Valeria looked at the director with disbelief.

“That’s impossible.”

Her voice was calm at first.

Too calm.

“I have no reason to interfere with a children’s competition.”

But nobody believed her anymore.

Because everyone had just seen her reaction.

She didn’t care about the rankings.

She cared about Patricio losing.

Santiago slowly turned toward her.

“Valeria.”

Just one word.

But it carried years of trust collapsing in a single second.

She immediately grabbed his arm.

“Santiago, listen to me. This woman is manipulating you.”

I almost laughed.

After thirteen years, she was still using the same strategy.

Blame someone else.

Make herself the victim.

But this time, there were cameras.

Witnesses.

Evidence.

The competition director opened the folder again.

“We have the complete access records.”

She looked at Santiago.

“The account used to request the grade changes belongs to an assistant in Mrs. Solórzano’s office.”

Valeria’s face changed.

“That proves nothing.”

The director continued.

“But the messages recovered from that account mention your son specifically.”

A large screen behind the stage suddenly displayed several conversations.

Everyone could see them.

“Patricio must win.”

“Those twins cannot be allowed to surpass him.”

“Find a way to lower their scores.”

The entire auditorium exploded in whispers.

My sons stood beside me, confused.

They didn’t understand why adults were fighting over a trophy.

They only knew they had worked hard.

They only knew they had won.

Santiago stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Patricio.

His son with Valeria.

The boy who had spent his entire life receiving everything.

Private schools.

Expensive tutors.

The best equipment.

And still lost to two children who built their first robot from discarded parts.

For a moment, I saw something change in Santiago’s eyes.

Not anger.

Not shame.

Regret.

But regret was thirteen years late.

He approached me again.

“Elena…”

I didn’t move.

“Don’t.”

His expression hurt.

“Please let me explain.”

I looked at him.

“Explain what?”

“Why you abandoned me?”

“Why you disappeared?”

“Why you never asked if our children survived?”

Every word made his face lose color.

People around us became quiet.

Because they were finally hearing the story behind the perfect businessman.

Santiago lowered his voice.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

Because whatever excuse he had prepared sounded ridiculous now.

“You thought what?”

He looked at Mateo and Daniel.

“I thought you didn’t want me involved.”

I stared at him.

For thirteen years, that was the story he told himself?

“Interesting.”

My voice was cold.

“Because I called you.”

His eyes widened.

“What?”

“I called you from the hospital.”

Silence.

“Five times.”

“I sent messages.”

“I asked your assistant to tell you that the babies were born early.”

Santiago shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I took a small envelope from my bag.

The one I had carried for years.

The one I never thought I would need.

Inside were printed messages.

Hospital records.

Call logs.

Every unanswered attempt.

“I kept these because one day my children would ask me why their father wasn’t there.”

Santiago took the papers with trembling hands.

His eyes moved across every page.

And slowly, his entire world collapsed.

Because the truth was not that I had kept him away.

The truth was that he had chosen not to come.

Valeria watched his reaction and suddenly became nervous.

“Santiago, don’t let her manipulate you.”

He ignored her.

For the first time, he ignored her.

He looked at Mateo.

Then Daniel.

His voice broke.

“Do they know?”

I answered before my sons could.

“No.”

Santiago closed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because they had a mother.”

I looked at my children.

“And I refused to let them grow up believing they were abandoned because they weren’t valuable.”

That sentence destroyed him more than any accusation.

Because he finally understood.

My sons didn’t need his money.

They didn’t need his name.

They had already become extraordinary without him.

Later that night, after the competition ended, Santiago waited outside the building.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a company president.

Just as a man who had lost thirteen years.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

“Are you here to ask forgiveness?”

He was silent.

Because he knew he didn’t deserve it.

“I want to meet them.”

I looked at him.

“You want to meet them now because the world knows they are yours.”

His face changed.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I want to meet them because they are my children.”

For a second, I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

The lawyer who had helped me years ago.

His voice sounded urgent.

“Elena, you need to come immediately.”

“Why?”

There was a pause.

“Because I found the original divorce documents from thirteen years ago.”

My heart tightened.

“What about them?”

“Someone changed the hospital records before Santiago signed.”

I froze.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The reason Santiago believed you were dying and the babies might not survive…”

“Was because someone wanted him to believe that.”

I looked toward Santiago.

And suddenly everything changed.

Because the betrayal from thirteen years ago wasn’t just Santiago’s decision.

Someone had carefully built the lie that destroyed our family.

And now…

the person behind it was finally about to be revealed.
