PART 2: THE SON WHO BROUGHT TWO BROKEN HEARTS BACK TOGETHER

The last thing I remembered was Ethan’s voice.

Not as my ex-husband.

Not as the man who signed the divorce papers.

But as the man who once promised me that he would never let me face anything alone.

Then everything disappeared.

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I heard was a soft sound.

A baby crying.

For a few seconds, I didn’t understand.

Then I remembered.

The delivery room.

The pain.

The fear.

Ethan.

I tried to move.

My body was weak.

A nurse immediately came closer.

“Don’t move too much.”

I looked around.

“Where is my baby?”

The nurse smiled.

“Healthy.”

Those words made tears fall instantly.

“Your son is perfectly fine.”

My son.

Our son.

Then the door opened.

Ethan walked in.

Not wearing a surgical gown anymore.

Not as a doctor.

Just as a father.

He stopped when he saw me awake.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Six months of distance.

Six months of silence.

Six months of pretending we didn’t still matter to each other.

All of it disappeared in that moment.

“He’s beautiful.”

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

I looked away.

“He looks like you.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Thank you.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

“For giving me the chance to meet him.”

My heart tightened.

Because that was the problem.

He thought I had taken something away from him.

But I knew the truth.

I had been afraid.

Afraid that if I told him, he would only return because he felt obligated.

“Ethan…”

He sat beside the bed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked down.

Because I had imagined this conversation hundreds of times.

But never like this.

“I didn’t know if you wanted me.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“I didn’t know if you would come back because you loved me…”

“Or because you felt responsible.”

Silence.

The room became very quiet.

Then Ethan took a deep breath.

“Sophia.”

I looked at him.

“I was angry when we divorced.”

“I was tired.”

“You were tired.”

“We both said things we didn’t mean.”

His eyes became red.

“But I never stopped loving you.”

I didn’t answer.

Because those words were the ones I had waited months to hear.

But part of me was still afraid.

“You signed.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You let me leave.”

“I know.”

“Then why should I believe you now?”

The question hurt him.

But he didn’t avoid it.

“Because I was wrong.”

A doctor.

A man who always needed to be right.

Was admitting he was wrong.

“I thought giving us space would fix everything.”

He looked at the baby sleeping beside me.

“I didn’t know I was losing my family.”

For the first time, I saw Ethan not as the perfect doctor everyone admired.

But as a man who was also broken.

A few days later, we took our son home.

Not together.

Not immediately.

We had too many wounds.

Too many things left unsaid.

But we started talking.

Slowly.

Honestly.

For the first time in years, we stopped arguing to win.

We started talking to understand.

Ethan learned that I didn’t need him to solve every problem.

I needed him to stand beside me.

I learned that he wasn’t cold because he didn’t care.

He was exhausted and afraid of failing.

Three months later, Ethan came to my apartment.

Our son was sleeping in his arms.

He looked nervous.

More nervous than when he entered an operating room.

“I have something to ask.”

I smiled.

“What?”

He took a small box from his pocket.

My heart stopped.

“Sophia, I don’t want to pretend the past didn’t happen.”

“I hurt you.”

“You hurt me.”

“But I don’t want our story to end there.”

He opened the box.

Inside was not a huge diamond.

Not an expensive ring.

Just a simple band.

The same style as the one I wore when we first married.

“I don’t want to marry you because we have a child.”

“I don’t want to marry you because it’s the responsible thing to do.”

“I want to marry you because after losing you…”

“I realized you were the person I was always trying to come home to.”

My eyes filled with tears.

This time, they weren’t from pain.

They were from finally hearing what my heart had waited for.

“Are you sure?”

He smiled.

“For the first time in my life, yes.”

A year later, we had the wedding we never had before.

No huge celebration.

No perfect decorations.

Just the people who truly loved us.

Our son was carried down the aisle in his grandfather’s arms.

And when Ethan took my hand, I remembered the woman I was six months earlier.

Alone.

Scared.

Convinced she had to carry everything by herself.

She was wrong.

Because sometimes people don’t separate because love disappears.

Sometimes they separate because two exhausted people forget they are on the same side.

Ethan and I almost lost our family because neither of us wanted to be the first to admit:

“I need you.”

But our son gave us another chance.

And this time…

we chose each other.

Not because we had to.

Because we wanted to.
