PART 2: THE DOCUMENT JAVIER NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE

Javier stared at the photographer’s screen without blinking.

At first, he didn’t understand what he was seeing.

The picture looked normal.

The studio.

The white dress.

Camila smiling with the veil over her head.

But in the background, behind the illuminated mirror, there was a small table that no one had noticed during the photo session.

On top of it was a black folder.

And inside that folder…

a document.

The photographer zoomed in.

Javier’s expression changed instantly.

Because he recognized the signature.

—That can’t be…

His voice came out low.

Camila moved closer, curious.

—What is it?

Javier didn’t answer.

I watched him calmly.

For the first time in years, I saw fear in his eyes.

The folder contained nothing related to the wedding.

It contained the complete financial audit report of the Mendoza family company.

A copy I had received that same morning.

For months, Javier had been using my money to maintain an image he could no longer afford.

The trips.

The cars.

The expensive dinners.

Even the wedding reservations.

Everything looked like success from the outside.

But the truth was different.

His family’s company was drowning in debt.

And he had used my personal assets as collateral without telling me.

Javier grabbed the folder from the table.

—Valeria, what is this?

I looked at him calmly.

—Something you should have read before deciding to humiliate me in front of everyone.

His expression hardened.

—Were you investigating me?

I slowly shook my head.

—No.

—I was protecting what belongs to me.

Javier dropped the folder onto the table.

—After seventeen years, are you really going to throw everything away because of one mistake?

I looked directly at him.

—I’m not throwing anything away.

—I’m finally putting down something you never valued.

The studio became completely silent.

Camila lowered her eyes.

For the first time, she no longer looked so confident.

Javier stepped closer.

—Valeria, we need to talk about this privately.

I smiled.

—Privately?

—An hour ago, you didn’t care that everyone here saw another woman wearing my wedding dress.

Camila froze.

Javier looked at her.

Then back at me.

—After seventeen years, you would destroy everything?

I picked up my bag.

—No.

—After seventeen years, I finally stopped destroying myself.

He quickly pulled out his phone.

—The wedding payments can’t just be canceled.

—They already were.

His face changed.

—The venue, the banquet, the suppliers…

—Everyone received the cancellation notice this morning.

He stared at me.

—When did you plan this?

I looked at the man I once wanted to marry.

—The day I heard Camila say she hoped our wedding was only a formality until you finally made your decision.

Camila’s eyes widened.

—I never said that…

I took out my phone.

I pressed a button.

A recording started playing.

Camila’s voice filled the studio.

“Javier still loves me. Valeria is just comfortable for him. After so many years, he won’t leave everything for a woman like me.”

The silence was unbearable.

Javier looked at Camila.

She immediately turned pale.

—Javier, I can explain…

But he wasn’t listening anymore.

Because he finally understood something.

He hadn’t lost a wedding.

He had lost the only person who had supported his entire life while he searched for someone else.

I placed the ring box in front of him.

—Keep everything you built with lies.

I turned toward the door.

—Valeria…

I stopped.

—Yes?

For the first time, his voice sounded desperate.

—Did you ever love me?

I looked at him for a few seconds.

Then I answered:

—I loved you so much that I forgot to ask myself if you loved me.

Then I opened the door to the studio.

Outside was Mexico City.

My life.

My work.

My future.

And for the first time in seventeen years…

I wasn’t waiting for someone to choose me.

I had chosen myself.

But as I walked away, my phone vibrated.

It was a message from my lawyer.

Only one sentence:

“Valeria, we found something else. Javier didn’t only use your money. He also hid a contract signed five years ago.”

I stopped.

Because if that document was real…

Javier’s betrayal was much bigger than I ever imagined.
