/Part 2: The Wife Who Woke Up With A Secret

The room went silent when Dr. Caleb Reed placed the ultrasound image on the tray.

Julian stared at the two tiny silhouettes on the screen.

For the first time since I opened my eyes, I saw something I never expected from him.

Fear.

“Nora…” he whispered.

His voice cracked.

“You were pregnant?”

I watched him carefully from the hospital bed.

Three days ago, he had stood over my bleeding body and believed I was gone.

Three days ago, he had told Selina they were free.

But now he was looking at me like I was something precious.

Like I was someone worth protecting.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because I finally understood.

Julian wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing what I represented.

His perfect image.

His reputation.

His future.

Dr. Caleb folded his arms.

“Your wife was carrying twins, Mr. Vance.”

Julian’s face turned pale.

“Twins?”

“Yes.”

The doctor’s voice remained cold.

“And the injuries she suffered could have ended tragically for all three of them.”

Julian looked at me.

His eyes filled with regret.

Or maybe fear.

I still couldn’t tell the difference.

“Nora, I didn’t know.”

I stared at him.

That was the first thing he said.

Not “I’m sorry.”

Not “Are you okay?”

Not “I almost lost you.”

Just:

“I didn’t know.”

As if knowing would have changed what he did.

As if the lives inside me were the only reason my existence suddenly mattered.

I slowly turned my face away.

“Leave.”

Julian froze.

“What?”

“I said leave.”

His hands tightened around the bouquet of white roses.

“I came here because I was worried about you.”

A bitter smile touched my lips.

“Worried?”

The word sounded strange coming from him.

“You stepped over me, Julian.”

His expression changed.

“Nora…”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

But for the first time in years, I wasn’t afraid of him.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.”

The room became painfully silent.

Julian looked toward Dr. Caleb.

Then back at me.

“You’re my wife.”

I looked at him.

“And you almost made me your victim.”

The color drained from his face.

Because he knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

I saw the moment he realized something was wrong.

I was not crying.

I was not begging.

I was not asking why.

The old Nora would have done that.

The old Nora would have searched for an explanation.

She would have blamed herself.

But that woman had stayed on a Persian rug waiting for her husband to save her.

And he didn’t.

A nurse entered the room with a tablet.

“Mrs. Vance, there is something you should know.”

I looked at her.

She hesitated.

“Your smartwatch was brought in with your belongings.”

My heart skipped.

Julian didn’t notice.

But Dr. Caleb did.

His eyes moved toward me.

Just slightly.

Because he was the only person who knew why that mattered.

The recording.

The proof.

The truth Julian thought disappeared with my consciousness.

“I’ll leave you to rest,” Dr. Caleb said.

But before he walked away, he quietly placed my smartwatch on the bedside table.

Julian saw it.

“What is that?”

I looked at the device.

Then at him.

“Nothing.”

For the first time, I watched Julian become suspicious.

Good.

Let him wonder.

Let him feel the same uncertainty I felt when I saw Selina standing in my home, pretending to be innocent.

After Julian left the room, I waited five minutes.

Then I reached for the watch with shaking fingers.

The screen lit up.

One recording.

Three minutes and forty-two seconds.

I pressed play.

My own breathing filled the room.

Then Julian’s voice.

“She’s gone.”

A pause.

Then Selina.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

My eyes closed.

Even hearing it again hurt.

But I needed to hear every word.

Because this time, I wasn’t listening as a dying wife.

I was listening as someone preparing to fight back.

Then Julian spoke again.

“I did what you asked.”

Selina laughed softly.

“Finally.”

My fingers tightened around the watch.

But then came something I didn’t expect.

A sentence that changed everything.

“We still have one problem.”

Selina’s voice became colder.

“What problem?”

“Nora’s shares.”

I opened my eyes.

Julian continued.

“If she dies without changing the documents, everything goes to the twins.”

Silence.

Then Selina whispered:

“Then she can’t die yet.”

My blood turned cold.

I stopped breathing.

Because in that moment, I understood something far worse than betrayal.

Julian had never planned for me to simply disappear.

He needed me alive.

Alive long enough to give him what he wanted.

I looked at the hospital door.

Then at the smartwatch in my hand.

And for the first time since I married Julian Vance, I smiled.

Because he thought I woke up helpless.

He thought I woke up broken.

He had no idea the woman lying in that bed had already heard his confession.

And now I knew exactly how to destroy him.

But before I could make my next move, my phone lit up with an unknown message.

One photo appeared.

It was taken inside my hospital room.

A photo of me sleeping.

Taken just hours earlier.

Underneath it were six words:

“You should have stayed unconscious, Nora.”
