PART 2: THE DOCUMENT THAT DESTROYED HIS LAST EXCUSE

Mateo held the medical report in his hands.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

The confidence he always carried disappeared from his face.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“Valeria…”

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

Afraid.

I watched him read the first line again.

Then the second.

The room became completely silent.

“What is this?”

I looked at him calmly.

“The truth you never bothered to ask about.”

Mateo lowered the report slowly.

“You went through with it?”

I almost smiled.

That was his first question.

Not:

“Are you okay?”

Not:

“Were you in pain?”

Not:

“Why did you have to face this alone?”

His only concern was what I had done.

“What did you expect me to do, Mateo?”

My voice remained steady.

“Wait at home while you built another family with another woman?”

His expression changed.

“That is not what happened.”

I looked at the wedding photos hanging on the wall.

Our smiles.

Our promises.

The life he had sold to everyone.

“Really?”

“You married Claudia the morning after our wedding.”

“You let your family call her your wife.”

“You let her hold a marriage certificate with your name.”

“And then you came back here and told me I was still your only wife.”

Mateo stepped closer.

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“No.”

I interrupted him.

“I understood perfectly.”

“You just didn’t expect me to accept it.”

He looked at the report again.

His lips moved slightly.

“You were carrying twins?”

Finally.

After everything.

He finally saw the words.

Twin pregnancy.

Two viable fetuses.

Two lives he had never once protected.

“Yes.”

My answer was quiet.

“You were going to have two children.”

Mateo froze.

The color drained from his face.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I stared at him.

A strange feeling passed through me.

Was he really asking that?

“You want to know why?”

“Because when I needed you the most, you were standing beside another woman.”

“Because while I was lying in a hospital bed, you were signing a marriage certificate with Claudia.”

“Because you had already made your decision.”

Mateo shook his head.

“No, Valeria. You misunderstood.”

“Claudia needed me.”

“She had nobody.”

I laughed softly.

“And I did?”

That question finally silenced him.

Because he knew the answer.

I had always been alone whenever he chose someone else.

The first time was when Claudia returned after the accident.

The second time was when his family demanded that I understand her pain.

And the last time was when he destroyed our marriage before it even began.

Mateo sat down slowly.

His hands covered his face.

“Does my family know?”

I looked at him.

“Know what?”

“That you chose another woman over your pregnant wife?”

“That you lost your children because of the decision you made?”

His breathing became heavier.

“Valeria…”

“No.”

I stepped away.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right.”

At that moment, his phone rang.

Claudia.

Her name appeared clearly on the screen.

Mateo looked at it.

Then looked at me.

For the first time, he hesitated.

I smiled faintly.

“Answer it.”

He didn’t move.

“Valeria…”

“Answer it.”

“Maybe your real wife needs you.”

Those words hit him harder than I expected.

His hand slowly lowered.

The phone stopped ringing.

A few seconds later, a message appeared.

Claudia had sent a photo.

Mateo opened it by accident.

And his entire expression changed.

Because in the photo was the marriage certificate they had signed that morning.

But underneath it was a message:

“Now that everything is official, when are you going to tell Valeria that the baby was never supposed to be hers?”

I saw Mateo’s face turn completely pale.

“What did she mean?”

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Mateo.”

My voice became colder.

“What did she mean by that?”

He stood up suddenly.

“Valeria, I can explain.”

But I already knew.

Because the man standing in front of me wasn’t shocked because Claudia had lied.

He was shocked because I had finally discovered the truth.

The truth about why Claudia needed him.

The truth about why he married her.

And the truth about why my pregnancy had always been a problem for them.

I picked up my suitcase.

Mateo grabbed my arm.

“Where are you going?”

I looked at his hand holding mine.

The same hand that had placed a ring on my finger yesterday.

The same hand that had signed another marriage certificate today.

I slowly removed it.

“Somewhere you can’t decide my future anymore.”

Then I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Mateo finally shouted the words I had waited months to hear.

“Valeria, please… don’t leave.”

I stopped.

But I didn’t turn around.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

He wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing control.

And tomorrow morning, when the Serrano family discovered what was written in that medical report…

Mateo would finally understand what he had truly destroyed.
