PART 2: THE WIFE WHO STOPPED WAITING

Adrian sat alone in the empty hospital room.

For the first time in seven years, there was no one waiting for him.

No Laura asking if he had eaten.

No Laura reminding him about meetings.

No Laura quietly standing behind him when the world became difficult.

Just silence.

He looked at the envelope again.

Divorce request.

Birth certificates.

A new professional card.

Laura Hayes.

Lawyer.

The name felt unfamiliar.

Not because he didn’t know it.

But because he had forgotten it.

He had spent seven years saying “my wife” so naturally that he forgot there was a woman behind that title.

A woman with dreams.

A woman with ambition.

A woman who once had a life before him.

His phone vibrated.

Olivia.

For a moment, his instinct was to answer.

The same instinct that had made him run toward Olivia whenever she was upset.

But this time, he stopped.

He looked at Laura’s empty hospital bed.

And he finally asked himself a question he should have asked years ago.

Why did he always have time for everyone else…

but never for the woman who carried his children?

The next morning, Adrian returned home.

He expected to find Laura there.

He expected her to be angry.

He expected tears.

Arguments.

Anything.

But the house was strangely quiet.

The kitchen was clean.

The living room was organized.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Except Laura was gone.

Her books were missing.

Her professional documents were missing.

Even the small plants she had taken care of for years were gone.

She hadn’t left in anger.

She had left with a plan.

That hurt him more.

Because anger meant she still cared.

Leaving calmly meant she had already accepted the end.

His mother arrived shortly after.

When she saw the divorce papers, her expression changed.

“Laura did this?”

Adrian nodded.

His mother immediately became upset.

“She has three children. How can she be so selfish?”

Adrian looked at her.

Three children.

The words echoed.

Because for five days…

Five entire days…

Laura had taken care of three newborn babies alone.

And nobody had asked how she was doing.

Not him.

Not his family.

Nobody.

“She isn’t selfish,” Adrian said quietly.

His mother looked surprised.

“You’re defending her?”

He looked at the divorce papers.

“No.”

“I’m finally seeing her.”

That afternoon, Adrian went to Laura’s old law firm.

He didn’t know why.

Maybe because it was the only place where she still existed before becoming Mrs. Cole.

The receptionist recognized him.

“Mr. Cole?”

“I need to see Laura Hayes.”

The receptionist hesitated.

“She is not here anymore.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“She opened her own office.”

“She returned last month.”

Returned.

That word hurt.

Because Laura hadn’t started something new.

She had returned to herself.

The receptionist handed him a business card.

Laura Hayes.

Attorney at Law.

A simple card.

No mention of the Cole family.

No mention of his name.

Nothing connected to him.

Adrian found her office two hours later.

Through the glass door, he saw her.

Laura was sitting behind a desk.

Her hair was tied back.

Her expression was focused.

Confident.

Different.

Not the woman who waited for him at midnight.

Not the woman who apologized for needing him.

Not the woman who slowly disappeared inside his marriage.

This was the woman he first met.

The lawyer who challenged him without fear.

The woman who never needed him.

He stood there for several minutes before entering.

Laura looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, Adrian forgot what he wanted to say.

Because he realized something painful.

He had spent years trying to make Laura become someone who needed him.

But the woman in front of him had always been complete.

She just stopped showing it.

“Why are you here?” Laura asked.

Her voice was calm.

Not cold.

Not angry.

Just distant.

Adrian sat down.

“I want to talk.”

“About what?”

He looked at her.

“About us.”

Laura closed the file in front of her.

“There is no us anymore.”

The words were simple.

But they hurt more than any accusation.

“Laura…”

“No, Adrian.”

She interrupted him gently.

“You don’t get to miss me now.”

“You don’t get to realize my value because I finally stopped waiting.”

His eyes lowered.

“I made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

Her answer came immediately.

“You did.”

“I ignored them.”

“I convinced myself you were busy.”

“I convinced myself that love meant understanding.”

She smiled sadly.

“But love doesn’t mean disappearing.”

Adrian couldn’t answer.

Because every word was true.

Then Laura placed a document on the table.

“What is this?”

“Your custody proposal.”

He looked surprised.

“You want full custody?”

Laura shook her head.

“No.”

“I want shared responsibility.”

“Something you should have wanted five days ago.”

Those words hit him.

Because she wasn’t trying to punish him.

She wasn’t trying to destroy him.

She was simply asking him to finally become the father he claimed to be.

Adrian looked at the document.

Then at her.

“Can I see them?”

Laura was silent.

For a long moment.

Then she answered:

“Yes.”

“But not as my husband.”

“Not as Mr. Cole.”

“Only as their father.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

And when he left her office, he understood something that terrified him.

He had spent seven years afraid of losing Laura.

But he never realized he was losing her every single day.

Until one morning…

she finally stopped trying to be found.

And somewhere else in the city, Olivia Grant received a message from Adrian.

A message that changed everything.

Because for the first time in years…

he wasn’t asking Olivia if she was okay.

He was asking her why she had lied.
