/PART 2: THE SECRET ERIC NEVER EXPECTED TO FACE

For the first few days after Barbara confronted Eric, I expected chaos.

I expected angry phone calls.
I expected accusations.
I expected him to show up at my door and demand that I apologize for “ruining his life.”

But nothing happened.

And somehow, that silence felt worse.

Eric had always been someone who believed problems disappeared if he ignored them long enough.

A broken promise.
A forgotten responsibility.
A difficult conversation.

He simply walked away and waited for someone else to fix it.

But this time, there was nobody left to protect him.

Barbara stayed with me often during those first weeks.

Not because she wanted to replace Eric.
Not because she felt guilty.

She was there because she finally understood what I had been carrying alone.

She helped me organize Chloe’s medical appointments.
She taught me how to handle the endless paperwork.
She sat beside me during nights when exhaustion made everything feel impossible.

But she also made one thing very clear.

“Claire, you need to build your own life again,” she told me one evening while Chloe slept peacefully nearby.

I looked at her.

“What if I can’t?”

Barbara reached over and gently touched my hand.

“You can. Because you already survived the hardest part.”

I wanted to believe her.

But while I was trying to rebuild my life, Eric was discovering what happened when nobody cleaned up his mess.

The reduced rent disappeared.

The bills he once ignored started arriving.

The girlfriend who had laughed at me on the porch began realizing that Eric’s version of reality was not the truth.

According to Barbara, the arguments started almost immediately.

She told me Eric kept insisting that everyone was “overreacting.”

He said I had manipulated his mother.
He said Barbara had chosen my side.
He said people were making him look like the villain.

But nobody believed him anymore.

Because the truth was much simpler.

He had left.

He had taken money.

And he had refused to help his own daughter.

There was no excuse that could change those facts.

A month later, I received a message from Eric.

The first one since he walked out.

I stared at his name on my phone for several minutes before opening it.

Claire, we need to talk.

That was all.

No apology.
No question about Chloe.
No concern about how she was doing.

Just a demand.

I almost ignored it.

Then another message appeared.

I know you’re angry, but this has gone too far.

I felt my hands tighten around the phone.

Gone too far?

That sentence told me everything.

Eric still believed he was the victim.

I didn’t answer.

A few hours later, Barbara called me.

“Did he contact you?”

“Yes.”

She was quiet.

“What did he say?”

I told her.

Barbara sighed.

“I was afraid of that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Because Eric still hasn’t understood the problem.”

The next day, Barbara asked me to meet her at a small café.

When I arrived, she was sitting with a folder in front of her.

I immediately felt nervous.

“What is that?”

She looked at me seriously.

“It’s something Eric never knew about.”

I sat down.

Barbara opened the folder slowly.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

My confusion must have shown on my face because she explained.

“When Eric was younger, he made several financial mistakes. His father and I spent years protecting him from the consequences.”

I listened carefully.

“But after his father passed away, I realized something important.”

She pushed one document toward me.

“I wasn’t helping him become responsible. I was teaching him that someone would always save him.”

I looked at the papers.

“What are these?”

Barbara took a breath.

“An account of everything I paid for over the years.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“His car. His debts. His missed payments. His emergencies.”

She paused.

“Thousands and thousands of dollars.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Barbara…”

She shook her head.

“I’m not telling you this because I want revenge.”

Her voice became softer.

“I’m telling you because Eric needs to finally understand that his actions have consequences.”

That evening, Eric called again.

This time, I answered.

“Claire,” he said immediately, sounding frustrated. “Your influence on my mother needs to stop.”

I closed my eyes.

“My influence?”

“Yes. She’s acting completely different.”

I looked down at Chloe sleeping in my arms.

“No, Eric. She’s acting like someone who finally knows the truth.”

Silence.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I made mistakes.”

The words surprised me.

But before I could respond, he continued.

“But you don’t understand how hard things have been for me.”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Eric,” I said quietly, “you left me alone after surgery with a newborn baby.”

He said nothing.

“You told me she was my responsibility.”

Another silence.

Then I said the sentence I had been waiting weeks to say.

“She was never just my responsibility.”

His breathing changed.

“She was yours too.”

For the first time, Eric had no answer.

And maybe that was the moment he finally realized something.

The woman he abandoned was no longer begging him to care.

I was done asking.

But just as I thought the conversation was over, Eric spoke again.

And the next thing he said revealed a secret that changed everything.
