/PART 2: THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FOR HIS DAUGHTER

Alexander stayed on the floor beside Sofia’s couch for almost a full minute.

He didn’t say anything.

He just looked at his daughter.

The little girl he remembered running through his house with messy hair and scraped knees was now sitting in a torn wedding dress, trembling in fear, trying to hide the pain she had suffered from the people who were supposed to protect her.

“Sofia…” he whispered.

His voice cracked.

“I should have been there.”

Sofia immediately looked away.

For years, she had told herself she didn’t need her father.

After the divorce, Alexander and I had fought constantly. Eventually, the arguments became too painful, and he moved away. Over time, the distance between him and Sofia grew until phone calls became occasional messages and birthdays became awkward conversations.

But seeing him now, seeing the regret in his eyes, Sofia finally broke.

“Why did you leave me?” she whispered.

That question hurt him more than any accusation could have.

Alexander lowered his head.

“I thought giving you space was better than making everything worse.”

Sofia wiped her tears.

“I didn’t need space, Dad.”

Her voice trembled.

“I needed my father.”

The room became silent.

I watched Alexander close his eyes for a moment, carrying the weight of those words.

Then he stood up.

And the sadness on his face disappeared.

What replaced it was something colder.

Determination.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

Sofia looked nervous.

“Dad…”

“No.”

His voice was calm but firm.

“Tonight, you don’t protect anyone except yourself.”

So Sofia told him everything.

She told him about Carmen’s questions about the condo.

The pressure before the wedding.

The strange comments.

The demands disguised as family traditions.

She told him how Javier changed after the wedding ceremony.

How his loving words disappeared the moment they were alone.

How he stood outside that hotel room and allowed his mother to hurt her.

Every detail made Alexander’s expression darker.

When Sofia finished, he asked one question.

“Do you still have the dress?”

She looked confused.

“The dress?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that dress is evidence.”

I immediately understood.

Alexander wasn’t thinking like an angry father anymore.

He was thinking like a man who knew how powerful the truth could be.

The next morning, everything changed.

Alexander contacted his attorney.

Not a friend.

Not someone who would make empty threats.

A professional who had handled some of the largest legal battles in Texas.

Meanwhile, I stayed with Sofia.

She barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the hotel room.

The laughter.

The betrayal.

Javier’s voice outside the door.

The man she married had not protected her.

He had protected his mother.

Around noon, Alexander returned.

He placed a folder on the table.

“I found something.”

Sofia looked up.

“What?”

Alexander opened the folder.

“Javier and Carmen have done this before.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

He slid several documents forward.

Different names.

Different women.

Different properties.

But the same pattern.

Carmen’s family had a history of targeting wealthy women, especially those who owned property before marriage.

They would push for transfers.

Joint ownership.

Financial control.

And when someone refused, the pressure began.

Sofia stared at the papers.

“I thought I was the first.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No, sweetheart.”

His voice softened.

“You were just the first person strong enough to survive it and tell someone.”

That afternoon, Alexander made one more discovery.

The hotel where Sofia had been attacked had security cameras.

And because the wedding reception was considered a high-profile event, the footage had been preserved.

The moment Alexander mentioned the cameras, Sofia froze.

“What if they erase it?”

“They won’t.”

“How do you know?”

He looked at her.

“Because I already requested the footage through my attorney.”

For the first time, I saw fear appear on someone else’s face.

Not Sofia’s.

Not mine.

Carmen’s.

Because later that evening, she called.

At first, Sofia refused to answer.

But Alexander picked up the phone.

There was silence on the other end.

Then Carmen spoke.

“Where is my daughter-in-law?”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“Your daughter-in-law is recovering from what you did to her.”

A pause.

Then Carmen laughed.

A cold, confident laugh.

“You should be careful with your accusations.”

Alexander looked at me.

Then at Sofia.

“Is that a threat?”

Carmen’s voice became sharper.

“She came into our family with an attitude. She needed to learn respect.”

My hands clenched.

But Alexander remained calm.

“Respect?”

His voice lowered.

“You confused fear with respect.”

Carmen went quiet.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“You think you’re protecting her? You have no idea what your daughter married into.”

Alexander frowned.

“What does that mean?”

But Carmen had already hung up.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Sofia whispered:

“She knows something.”

I looked at her.

“About what?”

Sofia hesitated.

Then she reached into the pocket of her wedding dress.

From inside, she pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this before everything happened.”

Alexander stared.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because I didn’t understand what it meant.”

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a copy of a document.

A document with Sofia’s name on it.

And a signature she had never seen before.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?”

Alexander read it slowly.

His face changed.

“What?”

Sofia looked terrified.

“Dad?”

He looked up.

“This isn’t about the condo.”

The room went completely still.

“It’s about something much bigger.”

He placed the paper on the table.

And when I saw the name at the bottom, I felt the same cold fear I had felt when Sofia appeared at my door.

Because someone had been planning this marriage long before Javier ever met my daughter.

And Carmen Robles wasn’t just trying to take Sofia’s property.

She was trying to take control of something Sofia didn’t even know she had.

Alexander picked up his phone.

“We need to find out who created this document.”

He looked at Sofia.

“And we need to do it before they realize we found it.”

Because the next person who was about to be exposed wasn’t Carmen.

It was someone much closer.

And Sofia had no idea that the biggest betrayal of her life was still waiting to be revealed.
