I stood outside the study door, barefoot and unable to move.
The words kept repeating in my head.
“They aren’t mine.”
For twenty years, Gabriel had been my husband.
Twenty years of birthdays.
Twenty years of anniversaries.
Twenty years of waking up beside the same person and believing I knew his heart.
And now, hidden behind a thin wooden door, I was hearing him beg a doctor to hide the truth about the children growing inside me.
My hands moved instinctively to my stomach.
Our babies.
The two lives I had waited decades to hold.
But suddenly, a terrifying question appeared.
Why would Gabriel say they weren’t his?
I didn’t open the door.
I didn’t confront him.
Not yet.
Because something inside me knew that if Gabriel was hiding something this big, I needed the entire truth.
I slowly walked back to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed.
Minutes later, I heard the study door open.
Gabriel returned quietly.
He looked at me sleeping and smiled sadly.
Then he touched my hair.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
My eyes remained closed.
But my heart felt like it was breaking.
The next morning, Gabriel acted normal.
Too normal.
He prepared breakfast.
He asked how I slept.
He kissed my forehead before leaving for work.
The same man who had cried when he saw the pregnancy test was now carrying a secret that could destroy everything.
After he left, I made one decision.
I needed answers.
I called Dr. Ramos.
The doctor hesitated when he heard my voice.
“Lucia…”
“Doctor, I heard what Gabriel said yesterday.”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then he sighed.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t hear that conversation.”
My chest tightened.
“Tell me the truth.”
Another pause.
“Lucia, the test results showed something unusual.”
“What?”
“The paternity screening Gabriel requested.”
I froze.
“Paternity screening?”
“Yes.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why would my husband request that?”
Dr. Ramos lowered his voice.
“Because Gabriel believed the babies might not be his.”
The room spun.
I held onto the kitchen counter.
“But why?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Because someone contacted him before your appointment.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer made me even more afraid.
Someone had planted doubt in my husband’s mind.
Someone wanted him to question my loyalty.
Someone wanted to destroy my family before my children were even born.
“Doctor, did the test show anything?”
He was quiet.
Then he said:
“Yes.”
My breathing stopped.
“What did it show?”
“The babies are genetically related to you.”
I closed my eyes.
“And Gabriel?”
Another pause.
“Lucia…”
My heart sank.
“Tell me.”
“The results are incomplete.”
“Incomplete?”
“Yes. The sample provided was damaged. We couldn’t confirm anything.”
I sat down slowly.
So Gabriel had not received proof.
He had only received uncertainty.
And instead of trusting me after twenty years of marriage…
he believed a doubt.
I ended the call and stared at the wall.
For years, Gabriel and I had struggled with infertility.
Every negative pregnancy test had hurt.
Every doctor appointment had brought disappointment.
There were moments when I wondered if we would ever become parents.
But we stayed together.
Or at least I thought we did.
That afternoon, I searched through old messages.
Old conversations.
Old memories.
And then I noticed something strange.
Three weeks before I became pregnant, Gabriel had started acting differently.
He became protective of his phone.
He took calls outside.
He asked unusual questions.
At the time, I thought he was stressed because of work.
Now I wasn’t so sure.

That evening, Gabriel came home with flowers.
“Lucia.”
I looked at him.
“We need to talk.”
His smile faded slightly.
“What happened?”
I placed the flowers on the table.
“I heard you talking to Dr. Ramos.”
The color disappeared from his face.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
“How much did you hear?”
“Enough.”
He sat down.
“Lucia, I can explain.”
I laughed softly.
“Explain what?”
“That I was scared.”
“Scared?”
“Yes.”
He ran his hand through his hair.
“After twenty years, after everything we went through, I couldn’t believe we finally got pregnant.”
I stared at him.
“So you accused me?”
“No.”
His voice became desperate.
“I didn’t accuse you.”
“You asked for a secret paternity test.”
Silence.
That was the first time he looked ashamed.
“Someone sent me information.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
He looked away.
“Gabriel.”
His silence was the answer.
“Who?”
Finally, he whispered a name.
A name I never expected.
“Marina.”
I froze.
Marina Bell.
My husband’s first love.
The woman he dated before me.
The woman everyone in his family believed he would marry.
“She contacted you?”
He nodded slowly.
“Two months ago.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?”
Gabriel looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
“She said she had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
He swallowed.
“That you had hidden something from me.”
My heart pounded.
“What kind of proof?”
Gabriel reached into his briefcase.
Then he placed a small envelope on the table.
“I never opened it.”
I stared at the envelope.
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to believe you.”
I looked at him.
“But you still asked for the test.”
He had no answer.
Slowly, I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
One photograph.
And a handwritten note.
My fingers started shaking.
Because the person in the picture was me.
But the date written on the back was impossible.
It was taken ten years before I met Gabriel.
And standing beside me in the photo…
was a man I had never seen before.
Underneath the picture was one sentence:
“Ask your wife who the father of her children really is.”
I looked up at Gabriel.
And suddenly I understood.
Someone wasn’t trying to destroy our marriage because of the twins.
The twins were only the beginning.
Someone had been hiding a secret about my past for decades.
And whoever sent that photo knew exactly how to make Gabriel doubt me.
Because they weren’t trying to take my husband away.
They were trying to reveal something I had never known about myself.
