The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.
For years, my first thought after opening my eyes had always been Lucas.
Where was he?
When would he return?
Was he tired?
Was he eating properly?
But that morning, there was nothing.
No waiting.
No disappointment.
Only silence.
I touched my abdomen gently.
The little life inside me was the only thing that still connected me to the woman I used to be.
The woman who believed love could fix everything.
The woman who thought patience would eventually be rewarded.
I looked at the divorce papers on the table.
Lucas’s signature was still there.
A simple name.
A simple line.
And yet it ended four years of marriage.
At nine in the morning, I went to the hospital.
Not as Lucas Harrington’s wife.
Not as the woman who had quietly endured everything.
Just as Dr. Emma Bennett.
My friend Natalie was waiting for me in the office.
One look at my face and she understood.
“You told him?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Emma…”
I looked down.
“He signed the divorce papers without reading them.”
Natalie became silent.
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
Then she asked softly:
“And the baby?”
My fingers tightened.
“I don’t know anymore.”
She sat beside me.
“You don’t have to decide today.”
I looked at the ultrasound report on the desk.
“I already decided.”
Natalie looked worried.
“Are you sure?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because the truth was painful.
I wasn’t ending this pregnancy because I didn’t love my child.
I was doing it because I was terrified.
Terrified of raising a child who would always wonder why their father chose someone else.
Terrified of watching my son or daughter grow up feeling unwanted.
Terrified of repeating my own pain.
But before I could sign the final authorization, something unexpected happened.
My phone rang.
Lucas.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Emma.”
His voice sounded strange.
Not cold.
Not distant.
Almost nervous.
“What is it?”
There was a pause.
“Where are you?”
“At work.”
“You didn’t wait for me last night.”
I almost laughed.
After all these months, that was what he noticed?
“I was tired.”
Another silence.
Then he asked:
“Are you angry?”
I looked out the window.
“No.”
“Why do you keep saying that?”
His voice became frustrated.
“Before, you would ask questions. You would want explanations.”
I closed my eyes.
“Lucas.”
“Yes?”
“The reason I stopped asking is because I already knew the answers.”
He went quiet.
“You don’t know everything.”
“No.”
“I don’t.”
“But I know enough.”
I heard him breathe deeply.
“Emma, Caroline is not what you think.”
I smiled sadly.
“Don’t worry.”
“I don’t think anything anymore.”
Those words made him silent.
Because for the first time, he realized something.
My anger had disappeared.
And that was much worse.
“Can we talk tonight?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because there is nothing left to discuss.”
Before he could respond, I ended the call.
That evening, Lucas came home earlier than usual.
When I entered the living room, he was already there.
Sitting on the sofa.
Waiting.
A year ago, I would have been happy.
I would have thought:
He finally cares.
Now, I only felt tired.
“Emma.”
I put my bag down.
“Yes?”
He looked at me.
“I saw Caroline’s post disappeared.”
I said nothing.
“You liked it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I looked at him.
“Because it was true.”
His face changed.
“Emma.”
“No.”
I interrupted him calmly.

“Don’t explain.”
He stood up.
“You don’t understand.”
I smiled.
“You’re right.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Because I never understood how a person could say they love one person while building a future with another.”
Lucas froze.
The room became completely silent.
Then his eyes moved toward the table.
Toward the documents.
His expression changed.
“What’s that?”
I didn’t answer.
He walked closer.
Picked them up.
Then his face turned pale.
“What did I sign?”
I looked at him.
“The divorce agreement.”
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Then he laughed.
A short, disbelieving laugh.
“That’s not possible.”
“It is.”
“You tricked me?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“You trusted me so little that you signed without reading.”
His hands tightened around the papers.
“Emma…”
“I spent four years hoping you would choose me.”
“I spent four years convincing myself Caroline was just your past.”
“But yesterday, when you walked into my office with her…”
I paused.
“I finally accepted that I was never your first choice.”
Lucas’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“There’s something else.”
I didn’t answer.
He noticed.
“Emma.”
His voice lowered.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
I looked at him.
The secret I had carried for weeks.
The secret he never noticed.
“I was pregnant.”
The color disappeared from his face.
“What?”
“I was.”
His eyes widened.
“Was?”
I looked away.
“I had already scheduled the procedure.”
Lucas stepped back.
Like the words physically hurt him.
“You were pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“With my child?”
I looked at him.
“Who else?”
His breathing became uneven.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I smiled.
A painful smile.
“Because when I needed a husband, you were busy being someone’s first love again.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
For once…
Lucas Harrington had no explanation.
Then his phone rang.
The screen showed Caroline.
He looked at it.
Then at me.
He didn’t answer.
I noticed.
But it no longer mattered.
After years of waiting for him to put me first…
I finally stopped needing it.
Lucas whispered:
“Emma, please.”
“Please what?”
“Give me a chance.”
I looked at the man I once loved more than myself.
And for the first time…
I felt free.
“Lucas.”
“Yes?”
“You didn’t lose me today.”
His eyes filled with pain.
“You lost me the day I stopped hoping you would come back.”
I walked past him.
Leaving him standing alone in the living room.
Behind me, the phone continued ringing.
Caroline.
Again and again.
But this time…
Lucas didn’t answer.
Because he finally understood.
The woman who had always waited for him…
was no longer waiting.
