PART 2: THE HUNDREDTH PROPOSAL THAT NEVER CAME

The question remained hanging in the room.

“Adrian… where is our money?”

For the first time in eight years, I saw him hesitate.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Because Adrian Cole was never a man who hesitated.

Not on the battlefield.

Not during negotiations.

Not when making decisions that affected hundreds of soldiers.

But now…

Standing in front of me…

He didn’t know how to answer.

“Elena.”

His voice became softer.

“Listen to me first.”

I looked at him.

That sentence.

The same sentence he always used when he wanted me to accept something painful.

“Listen to me.”

“Understand me.”

“Be reasonable.”

I had spent eight years being reasonable.

And what did I get?

A marriage certificate that belonged to another woman.

A house where I became a guest.

And savings that disappeared without my knowledge.

“Where is the money, Adrian?”

He looked away.

“Chloe needed help.”

The room became silent.

I felt my fingers become cold.

“How much?”

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Adrian.”

My voice was calm.

“How much of our money did you give her?”

Finally, he said:

“About one hundred thousand dollars.”

One hundred thousand.

The money I saved.

The money I earned from every mission.

Every night shift.

Every sacrifice.

The money I believed would become our future.

I laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Adrian frowned.

“Elena.”

“You spent our wedding money on your wife.”

His expression changed.

“She needed it.”

“And I?”

The question escaped before I could stop it.

“What did I need?”

He froze.

Because he didn’t know.

He never knew.

I needed him to choose me.

I needed him to see me.

I needed him to understand that loving someone did not mean always being the person who waited.

But I never asked for much.

That was my mistake.

I made myself easy to lose.

Chloe stepped forward.

“Elena, please don’t misunderstand.”

I turned toward her.

She looked uncomfortable.

Almost guilty.

Almost.

“I didn’t want this situation.”

I smiled.

“Really?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I know Adrian cares about you.”

The words almost made me laugh.

Cares.

Such a convenient word.

Not love.

Not choose.

Just care.

“I know he has always felt responsible for me.”

She touched the necklace around her neck.

“But he had no choice.”

No choice.

Another convenient phrase.

I looked at Adrian.

“Did you tell her?”

His expression changed.

“Tell her what?”

“That I proposed to you ninety-nine times?”

Silence.

“That before you married her, you promised me there would never be another woman?”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“That you held my hand and said I was the only person you wanted beside you?”

Chloe looked at him.

And for the first time…

she looked uncertain.

Because she had never seen the version of Adrian that belonged to me.

The version before duty.

Before guilt.

Before excuses.

I walked toward the bedroom.

Adrian followed.

“Elena.”

I opened the closet.

My clothes were still there.

Everything was exactly as I left it.

Because a foolish part of me had always believed I would return.

I took out a suitcase.

Adrian stood behind me.

“What are you doing?”

I folded my clothes calmly.

“Leaving.”

His face changed.

“You’re angry.”

I stopped.

Then looked at him.

“No.”

“I’m finished.”

Those words made him go quiet.

Because anger meant there was still something left.

But being finished meant there was nothing.

“Where will you go?”

I smiled slightly.

“Somewhere I don’t have to share my place with your wife.”

His jaw tightened.

“She is not my real wife.”

I looked at him.

“But she has your certificate.”

“She wears your ring.”

“She received your money.”

“And she lives in the home where you asked me to help her.”

I closed the suitcase.

“So tell me, Adrian.”

“Which part is not real?”

He couldn’t answer.

Because every answer would hurt him.

I walked past him.

At the door, he grabbed my wrist.

“Elena.”

I looked down at his hand.

Then at him.

Slowly, he let go.

Because he finally remembered.

I was the woman who had spent eight years reaching for him.

But I was also the woman who could walk away.

That night, I left military housing.

No dramatic goodbye.

No tears.

No final argument.

Just a suitcase.

A broken promise.

And a heart that was finally tired of waiting.

Seven years passed.

Everyone believed Adrian Cole had forgotten me.

They were wrong.

But they were also wrong about something else.

They thought he was waiting for me.

The truth was…

I was no longer waiting for him.

During those seven years, I rebuilt myself.

I left the military circle.

I created my own security consulting company.

I became someone whose name was respected without being attached to Adrian Cole.

I stopped counting how many days had passed since I left.

Because eventually…

you stop counting when something stops hurting.

Then came the reunion.

The planning meeting.

The moment I saw him again.

Everyone expected tears.

A dramatic reunion.

A woman running back into the arms of the man she loved.

But they didn’t understand.

The woman who loved Adrian Cole had already disappeared seven years ago.

The woman sitting beside him now was someone new.

After the meeting ended, Adrian waited outside.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

“Yes?”

He looked at me.

For a moment, the powerful general disappeared.

And I saw the man from eight years ago.

The man who once held my hand.

The man who once promised me a future.

“I divorced Chloe.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

His eyes widened.

“You knew?”

“Everyone knew.”

He looked hurt.

“I waited for you.”

I was silent.

He continued:

“For seven years.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His expression froze.

“Why did you wait?”

“Because I realized I made the biggest mistake of my life.”

I smiled faintly.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“You didn’t lose me because you married Chloe.”

His eyes moved.

“You lost me because every day you chose not to leave her.”

Those words hit harder than any accusation.

He lowered his head.

“I regret it.”

“I know.”

“I still love you.”

I looked at him quietly.

The old me would have cried hearing that.

The old me would have forgiven him immediately.

But time changes people.

Especially those who have survived heartbreak.

“I loved you too.”

His eyes lifted.

Hope appeared.

“But Adrian…”

I paused.

“The ninety-nine times I proposed to you were me asking you to choose me.”

“You rejected me ninety-nine times.”

His expression broke.

“And now?”

I looked at him.

“Now you finally want to choose me.”

A long silence.

“But I already chose myself.”

The hope in his eyes disappeared.

Not because he didn’t understand.

Because he did.

For seven years, he waited for the woman who would always come back.

But that woman was gone.

There would never be a hundredth proposal.

Because the person who had once begged for his love…

finally learned she deserved someone who never made her beg at all.
