PART 2: THE MONEY THAT WAS NEVER HIS

I stared at the document in my lawyer’s hands.

The bank transfer.

The original receipt.

My father’s signature.

For several seconds, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

“Adrian didn’t pay for your father’s treatment,” my lawyer explained quietly.

“He only transferred the money after receiving it from your father.”

I looked at the papers again.

Every line.

Every date.

Every amount.

Everything was clear.

My father had sold the old family property two years earlier when his illness began getting worse.

He knew his treatment would be expensive.

He knew I was married to Adrian.

And because he wanted me to have a stable life, he secretly transferred the money to Adrian.

Not because he trusted Adrian more than me.

But because he believed Adrian would protect his daughter.

My hands trembled.

My father had spent his final years believing my husband was a good man.

And Adrian had turned that trust into a weapon.

“He never told you?” my lawyer asked.

I shook my head.

“No.”

I couldn’t even recognize my own voice.

For two years, Adrian had repeated the same words whenever we argued.

“You wouldn’t be able to handle your father’s expenses without me.”

“Remember who helped you when your family needed it.”

“You should be grateful.”

I thought those words came from someone who sacrificed for me.

Now I understood.

They came from someone who had stolen my gratitude for something that was never his.

My lawyer pushed another envelope toward me.

“Your father left this.”

I froze.

“My father?”

“Yes. He asked that it only be opened after his funeral and only if you decided to leave Adrian.”

My breathing stopped.

Slowly, I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that used to appear on birthday cards when I was a child.

My dear Elena,

If you are reading this, it means you finally chose yourself.

I immediately covered my mouth.

Tears I had refused to shed at the funeral suddenly filled my eyes.

My father knew.

He knew.

I continued reading.

I know you, my daughter.

You always try to endure everything.

You always believe love means sacrificing more.

But marriage should never make you feel like you owe someone the right to hurt you.

The money Adrian received was never a gift to him.

It was your inheritance.

It was meant for your future and your security.

If one day he makes you believe you survived because of him, remember this:

You survived because you were strong.

Not because someone saved you.

My vision blurred.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For the first time since my father’s death, I allowed myself to cry.

Not because I missed him.

I would always miss him.

I cried because he had understood me until his final moment.

Even when I was too lost to understand myself.

Three days later, Adrian returned from the Maldives.

Apparently, he thought enough time had passed for my “tantrum” to disappear.

He walked into the apartment carrying a suitcase.

I was sitting by the window, reading through my father’s documents.

He looked surprised.

“You’re still here?”

I looked up.

“Yes.”

He removed his jacket.

“Good. I was thinking we should talk.”

I almost smiled.

Talk.

That was Adrian’s favorite word.

He used it whenever he wanted to explain why I should accept something unfair.

“I received the divorce papers,” he said.

“I know.”

“You really want to do this?”

“Yes.”

His expression darkened.

“Because of my trip?”

“No.”

“Because of Olivia?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I answered honestly.

“Because I finally realized I was married to someone who only valued me when I was useful.”

His face changed.

“That’s unfair.”

“No.”

I stood up.

“That’s exactly what happened.”

He laughed coldly.

“So after everything I did for you, this is how you repay me?”

I looked at him.

“What did you do for me, Adrian?”

Silence.

“You paid my father’s bills.”

His expression softened slightly.

Then I continued:

“With my father’s own money.”

The color drained from his face.

“What?”

I placed the documents on the table.

“Read them.”

He didn’t move.

“Adrian.”

My voice was calm.

“Read what you used to control me for two years.”

Slowly, he picked up the papers.

His eyes moved across the pages.

The silence became heavier with every second.

“No…”

A whisper.

Almost impossible to hear.

“No, this isn’t…”

“It is.”

He looked at me.

“Elena, I didn’t know.”

I nodded.

“Maybe you didn’t.”

That surprised him.

“But the moment you believed you had saved me, you used it against me.”

He had no answer.

Because he knew.

The worst thing about betrayal was not always the action itself.

Sometimes it was realizing the person who hurt you never thought they were doing anything wrong.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my lawyer.

The divorce hearing date was confirmed.

I looked at Adrian one last time.

“I hope you enjoy your freedom.”

His eyes suddenly changed.

Fear appeared.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Because for the first time, Adrian understood something.

I wasn’t threatening to leave.

I wasn’t trying to make him jealous.

I wasn’t waiting for him to stop me.

I was already gone.

And the woman he thought would always come back…

was never coming back again.
