/Part 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND RICHARD’S INTEREST IN MY SON

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

The water was still running.

The plates were still in my hands.

But everything inside me had gone completely silent.

Richard’s words echoed in my mind.

“You didn’t honestly believe I’d done all of this for no reason, did you?”

I slowly turned around.

“What exactly are you saying?”

The friendly man who had spent the entire evening complimenting my cooking was gone.

The patient coworker who always talked about how much potential Tyler had was gone.

The person standing in front of me was someone I didn’t recognize.

Richard leaned against the counter.

“I think you’ve misunderstood my relationship with Tyler.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then explain it.”

He glanced toward the hallway.

“Your son is special.”

I waited.

“He’s intelligent. Hardworking. But he’s also carrying something heavy.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard sighed.

“Tyler has spent his entire life wondering why his father left.”

My hands slowly tightened.

“That doesn’t give you the right to replace him.”

Richard looked at me.

“I never tried to replace anyone.”

“Then what did you try to do?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that hesitation bothered me more than anything.

Finally, he said:

“I wanted to give Tyler what he never had.”

I stared at him.

“A father?”

“No.”

His answer surprised me.

“An opportunity.”

Before I could respond, Tyler’s voice came from behind us.

“Opportunity for what?”

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

The coldness disappeared.

The smile returned.

“Tyler.”

My son walked into the kitchen holding a small box.

“What were you two talking about?”

I looked at Richard.

Then at my son.

And I realized something.

Tyler had no idea.

Whatever Richard was hiding, he had hidden it carefully.

“Your mother and I were just talking,” Richard said.

But Tyler looked between us.

He knew something was wrong.

“Mom?”

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Tyler, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Why is Richard so important to you?”

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Because he believes in me.”

The words hurt.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were honest.

I had spent years believing my love was enough.

But maybe my son had been searching for something I couldn’t give him.

“I believe in you too,” I whispered.

“I know, Mom.”

His voice softened.

“But you’re my mom.”

I looked away.

Because I understood.

He wasn’t saying I wasn’t enough.

He was saying there was a part of him that still wondered about the father who disappeared.

Richard stepped forward.

“Tyler deserves to know the truth.”

I immediately looked at him.

“What truth?”

Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope.

Tyler stared at it.

“What is that?”

Richard looked at him.

“Something your father left behind.”

The room froze.

My son’s expression changed.

“My father?”

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

Tyler’s biological father had walked out when he was six.

No calls.

No visits.

No explanation.

Just gone.

I had spent years protecting Tyler from that pain.

“Where did you get that?” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Your ex-husband gave it to me.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Why would he give you anything?”

Richard was silent.

Then he said:

“Because he knew I would eventually find Tyler.”

My son looked confused.

“Find me?”

Richard placed the envelope on the table.

“I knew your father years before he left.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Richard looked at Tyler.

“Your father wasn’t running away from you.”

Tyler’s face changed.

“Then why did he leave?”

Richard took a deep breath.

“Because he was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Richard looked directly at me.

And I knew whatever came next would change everything.

“He was afraid that if Tyler ever found out what really happened, he would hate him.”

My son slowly reached for the envelope.

But before he opened it, Richard stopped him.

“There’s something you need to understand first.”

Tyler looked up.

“What?”

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Your father didn’t abandon you.”

A long pause.

“He was trying to protect you.”

I felt a chill.

Because for eleven years, I had believed one story.

The story of a man who walked away.

But now another possibility was standing in my kitchen.

And I didn’t know which one was worse.

That my son’s father had left him…

Or that someone had made sure we believed he did.

Tyler opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

The moment he saw it, his face went pale.

“Mom…”

I stepped closer.

“What is it?”

He slowly turned the picture around.

And my breath stopped.

Because the person standing beside Tyler’s father in that photograph…

was Richard.
