Part 2: THE DAY ADRIÁN DISCOVERED HE HAD LOST EVERYTHING

The elevator doors opened.

Neither of us spoke.

Celeste walked out first, still wearing that confident smile she had carried all evening.

But I didn’t look at her anymore.

Because for the first time in months, I finally understood something.

I wasn’t fighting to keep my marriage.

I was fighting to free myself from it.

The next morning, Adrián called me.

I watched his name appear on my phone screen for almost a minute.

Before, that name would have made my heart race.

Now, it only reminded me of hospital corridors.

Of my father waiting alone.

Of a man who promised to protect my family while protecting someone else.

I answered.

“Valeria.”

His voice sounded tired.

Not guilty.

Just annoyed.

“Where have you been?”

I almost laughed.

That was his first question.

Not:

How are you?

Are you okay?

How is your father?

Only:

Where have you been?

“I’ve been handling my life.”

There was a pause.

“Your divorce request was serious?”

I looked at the documents sitting on my table.

The papers I had already signed.

“Yes.”

“Valeria, don’t make decisions because you’re emotional.”

Emotional.

That word.

The same word people used when they wanted to make a woman doubt herself.

I closed my eyes.

“My father died, Adrián.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

For several seconds, I thought the call had disconnected.

Then I heard him whisper:

“What?”

“My father died.”

His breathing changed.

“When?”

“While you were taking Celeste on a recovery trip.”

“Valeria…”

“No.”

My voice stayed calm.

“You don’t get to explain this.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t ask.”

Another silence.

Then his voice became softer.

“I’m sorry.”

But it was too late.

Because apologies cannot bring people back.

And they cannot erase the moments when someone chose another person over you.

“I have already buried my father,” I said.

“And now I’m burying the person I thought you were.”

I ended the call.

For the first time in years, I felt peaceful.

Not happy.

Not healed.

But peaceful.

Three days later, I received a visit.

Adrián.

He stood outside my apartment holding flowers.

The same flowers he used to bring me when we first met.

The difference was that they no longer meant anything.

“Can we talk?”

I stepped aside.

He entered slowly.

The apartment looked different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because I had.

“I went to see your father’s grave.”

I didn’t answer.

“I should have been there.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

“I should have chosen you.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Valeria…”

“I spent months believing I was losing you to another woman.”

My voice trembled slightly.

“But the truth is, I lost you the moment you decided my father’s life was less important than keeping Celeste comfortable.”

Adrián lowered his head.

“I never wanted him to die.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“But you accepted the possibility.”

That sentence broke something in his expression.

Because he knew.

He knew there was no excuse.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Celeste.

He immediately rejected the call.

I noticed.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because even now, he was still hiding.

“Why are you here?”

He looked at me.

“Because I realized I made a mistake.”

I smiled sadly.

“No, Adrián.”

“You made choices.”

Before he could answer, another notification appeared on his phone.

A message.

I wasn’t trying to look.

But the screen lit up between us.

And I saw the words.

“You promised she would sign everything after the divorce.”

My blood ran cold.

Adrián noticed my expression.

He grabbed the phone.

Too late.

I had already seen it.

“What does that mean?”

He said nothing.

“Adrián.”

The silence was enough.

I took one step back.

“You weren’t just leaving me for her.”

His face changed.

“You were planning something.”

“Valeria, listen—”

“No.”

My voice became quiet.

“Now you listen.”

I picked up the divorce agreement from the table.

“The woman you thought was too boring.”

I placed it in front of him.

“The wife who was just a wall.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“She is the only reason you still have anything.”

His expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

I smiled.

“Before my father died, he transferred his shares to me.”

Adrián froze.

“What?”

“The company.”

I paused.

“The assets.”

Another pause.

“Everything you thought you would control after divorcing me.”

I watched the realization spread across his face.

“You can’t.”

“I already did.”

He stepped forward.

“Valeria, we’re married.”

“Not for much longer.”

The man who had walked away believing he had won suddenly looked lost.

Because he finally understood.

He didn’t choose Celeste over me.

He chose Celeste over the only person who had protected his future.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, he answered.

I watched his face change.

“What do you mean the account is frozen?”

My heart stopped.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I knew.

Celeste had never loved him.

She had loved what he could give her.

And now, both of them were about to discover the same thing.

A person who builds everything alone can also take everything back.

Adrián slowly looked at me.

“Valeria…”

I walked toward the door.

“Goodbye, Adrián.”

As he stood there in silence, I closed the door.

And for the first time since my father died…

I finally felt free.
