/Part 2: The Truth Rowan Never Expected to Face

Rowan stood frozen beside the hospital door.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The man who had walked in expecting to find a tired new mother waiting for his apology was now staring at someone he had spent years fearing from a distance.

Gideon Sterling.

The name alone carried weight.

Business magazines called him ruthless.

Competitors called him impossible to defeat.

But to me, he was simply Dad.

And three days ago, when I called him while I was alone and terrified, he didn’t ask questions.

He just came.

Rowan finally found his voice.

“Phoebe…”

I looked at him.

Not with anger.

Not with tears.

Just disappointment.

“You knew who he was.”

Rowan swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And you never asked why I never introduced you?”

His eyes moved away.

Because he knew the answer.

When we first met, I told him I wanted a normal life.

I wanted someone who loved me because I was Phoebe.

Not because my father was Gideon Sterling.

And Rowan promised me that my past didn’t matter.

But now I wondered if he ever truly believed that.

He looked at Gideon.

“You’re her father?”

Dad gently adjusted Leo’s blanket.

“Yes.”

The room became silent again.

Rowan’s expression changed.

Not because he was sorry.

Because he was calculating.

I saw it.

The moment he realized the woman he had ignored was connected to power.

The moment he understood that the wife he dismissed had a family name he could no longer overlook.

“Phoebe, why didn’t you tell me?”

I almost laughed.

The question was unbelievable.

“Would it have changed anything?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because we both knew the answer.

A nurse entered quietly.

“Mrs. Sterling, the accountant is here.”

Rowan frowned.

“Accountant?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

His expression tightened.

“What does that mean?”

I reached for the folder on the table.

The folder I had received that morning.

The one containing everything I discovered while reviewing our finances.

I had spent years working as a forensic accountant.

I knew how to follow money.

How to find things people tried to hide.

And what I found hurt more than Rowan’s absence during labor.

I opened the folder.

“Do you remember when you told me your company needed help because of temporary financial problems?”

Rowan became quiet.

“Yes.”

“You asked me to delay buying a bigger house.”

“I was trying to be responsible.”

I nodded.

“That’s what you said.”

I placed the documents on the bed.

“But the money didn’t disappear.”

His face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

I pointed to the records.

“The transfers.”

He looked down.

Then his expression slowly changed.

Because he recognized the accounts.

“Rowan…”

His voice became lower.

“Where did you get this?”

“I found it.”

The truth was simple.

During my pregnancy, I had noticed unusual transactions.

Large payments.

Hidden accounts.

Money moving somewhere it shouldn’t.

At first, I believed there was a reasonable explanation.

I believed my husband.

Until the night he left me alone in labor.

That night changed everything.

Gideon looked at Rowan.

“You used my daughter’s company information without permission.”

Rowan immediately became defensive.

“I never stole anything.”

I looked at him.

“No?”

He became silent.

“You transferred money from the joint account.”

“It was for business.”

“You never told me.”

“It was temporary.”

I shook my head.

“Temporary things don’t need secret accounts.”

The room felt heavier.

Then Dad placed Leo carefully in my arms.

“Phoebe.”

I looked at him.

“Tell him what else you found.”

I took a breath.

“The money wasn’t the worst part.”

Rowan’s face turned pale.

“What else?”

I looked directly at him.

“You were planning to leave me.”

His expression froze.

“No.”

I placed another document on the bed.

A consultation agreement.

A private lawyer.

A draft separation plan.

Prepared two months earlier.

The same time Rowan started staying late.

The same time he stopped asking about my pregnancy.

The same time his mother began telling me I was “too sensitive.”

“You already planned your exit.”

Rowan shook his head.

“That’s not what it looks like.”

“Then what does it look like?”

He had no answer.

Because there was none.

Gideon stood slowly.

For the first time, I saw the businessman everyone feared.

Not angry.

Controlled.

“Rowan.”

He turned.

“You abandoned my daughter during childbirth.”

Rowan looked down.

“You betrayed her trust.”

Silence.

“And you thought the only consequence would be losing her?”

Rowan looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Dad looked at me.

I nodded.

Then I said:

“It means I already filed the necessary documents.”

Rowan’s eyes widened.

“What?”

I held his gaze.

“Three days ago.”

His face went completely white.

“You filed for divorce?”

“Yes.”

“But we just had a son.”

I looked down at Leo.

“Our son deserves a father who shows up.”

A painful silence followed.

Then Rowan whispered:

“Phoebe, please.”

The same word.

The same voice.

But it was too late.

Because three days ago, when I needed him most…

He chose not to come.

And now he finally understood something.

He hadn’t lost me because my father was powerful.

He hadn’t lost me because of money.

He lost me because when I was standing at the most important moment of my life…

I looked for him.

And he wasn’t there.

But as Rowan stepped back from the hospital bed, Gideon’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His expression changed after only a few seconds.

Then he looked at Rowan.

“Interesting.”

Rowan froze.

“What?”

Dad ended the call.

“The company you said was struggling…”

He paused.

“Just received an emergency audit request.”

Rowan’s face lost all color.

Because he finally realized.

The documents I found were only the beginning.

And the person who had been helping him hide everything…

was not someone outside the family.

It was someone sitting beside him at every dinner.

His own mother.

Selina.
