Part 2: The Daughter He Never Knew About

I slowly raised my head.

The man standing beside Lily was someone I had never expected to see again.

Ethan’s older brother, Daniel Cole.

Five years ago, he had been the only person in Ethan’s family who treated me with kindness.

He had known about us.

He had known how Ethan felt.

And he had been the one who told me, on graduation night, that Ethan was too proud to admit when he cared.

Now he stood in front of me with one hand resting casually on Lily’s shoulder.

“Mia,” he said quietly.

My fingers tightened around the file on my desk.

“Daniel.”

Ethan had appeared behind him.

The moment he saw his brother, his expression changed.

“You know her?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked at me.

I could see the question in his eyes.

Do you want me to tell him?

I shook my head almost imperceptibly.

“No need.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“It means you should probably stop asking questions you aren’t ready to hear the answers to.”

Ethan’s expression became colder.

Lily looked between them.

“I think I’m going to wait outside.”

She turned toward the elevator.

Daniel followed her.

Before leaving, he looked back at me.

“Call me.”

Then the doors closed.

Silence filled the office.

Ethan remained completely still.

“You knew my brother.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since college.”

His eyes became sharper.

“You never mentioned him.”

“You never asked.”

He stared at me.

Then his gaze dropped to my hand.

The cheap ring was still there.

“You really got married?”

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

I smiled.

“Why do you care?”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t ask.”

He turned away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his voice became low.

“Your daughter.”

I looked at him.

“What about her?”

“How old did you say she was?”

“Three.”

“Does she have your eyes?”

I smiled faintly.

“She has my eyes.”

His expression changed.

“Her father?”

“My husband.”

“You said you married recently.”

“Yes.”

“Then he isn’t her biological father.”

I looked directly at him.

“No.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Where is her biological father?”

“I don’t know.”

His eyes flashed.

“You don’t know?”

“He wasn’t interested.”

That was technically true.

Because I had never told him.

Five years earlier, after Ethan told me he would never marry a woman like me, I discovered I was pregnant.

I never contacted him.

I never asked for money.

I never demanded recognition.

I simply left.

My daughter, Emma, was born seven months later.

For three years, it had been just the two of us.

Until Daniel Cole came into our lives.

He never asked me to explain my past.

He simply accepted Emma as part of me.

And that was why, when Ethan appeared again, I had bought the ridiculous ring.

Not because Daniel and I were actually married.

But because I needed Ethan to understand that I had moved on.

Apparently, I had underestimated him.

The following morning, Ethan called me into his office.

I stood across from his desk.

“You’re leaving next week.”

“Yes.”

“I’ve reviewed your work.”

“Okay.”

“You’re one of the strongest people on the team.”

“Thank you.”

“You can stay.”

“I’ve already accepted another position.”

“Where?”

I looked at him.

“That’s personal.”

His expression hardened.

“Everything about you suddenly became personal.”

I smiled.

“That’s because you suddenly became interested.”

He stood.

“Mia.”

I turned toward the door.

“I need to work.”

He didn’t stop me.

But when I reached the hallway, I heard him say:

“I never meant what I said that night.”

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

“What part?”

“The part about women like you.”

I slowly looked back.

“You said you wanted a pure woman.”

“I was twenty-two.”

“You were old enough to know what you were saying.”

“I was stupid.”

“Yes.”

His face tightened.

“I thought you knew I didn’t mean it.”

“I did.”

That surprised him.

“I knew you didn’t mean to hurt me.”

“Then why did you leave?”

I looked at him.

“Because sometimes people don’t need to mean to hurt you.”

“They just need to show you where you stand.”

I walked away.

That evening, I picked Emma up from school.

She ran toward me with her backpack bouncing behind her.

“Mom!”

I crouched down and hugged her.

“How was school?”

“Good!”

Then she looked over my shoulder.

“Who’s that?”

I turned.

Ethan stood across the street.

He had followed me.

My smile disappeared.

“Mr. Cole?”

Emma looked at him curiously.

Ethan didn’t move.

His eyes were fixed on her.

Emma tilted her head.

“You look like me.”

My heart stopped.

Ethan’s face became completely pale.

He crouched slightly, as if he needed to see her more clearly.

Emma smiled.

“You have my eyes too.”

I immediately took her hand.

“Come on.”

Ethan stood.

“Mia.”

I kept walking.

“Mia, wait.”

I didn’t.

He followed us to the car.

“Please.”

I opened the passenger door for Emma.

Then I turned around.

“Don’t follow us.”

His voice cracked.

“Is she mine?”

Everything became silent.

I stared at him.

Emma was sitting inside the car, humming to herself.

I lowered my voice.

“You don’t get to ask that now.”

“Five years ago…”

“You told me exactly what kind of woman you wanted.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I was wrong.”

“You were.”

“I didn’t know.”

“That doesn’t change anything.”

“Please.”

I looked at him.

“You weren’t there.”

His shoulders dropped.

“You weren’t there when I found out.”

“You weren’t there when she was born.”

“You weren’t there when she had her first fever.”

“You weren’t there when she took her first steps.”

“You weren’t there for any of it.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

I got into the car.

Before closing the door, I looked at him one last time.

“Emma doesn’t need a father who suddenly appears because he finally discovered what he lost.”

The door closed.

I drove away.

That night, I expected Ethan to call.

He didn’t.

Instead, Daniel came to my apartment.

He stood at the door holding a small box.

“You should open this.”

Inside was an old photograph.

My face appeared in the corner.

Five years younger.

Standing beside Ethan.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“Ethan kept it.”

My heart tightened.

“He kept it?”

Daniel nodded.

“He told everyone he had thrown away everything from college.”

“He lied.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Mia, there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Ethan knew about the pregnancy.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He found out.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

My fingers went cold.

“Then why didn’t he come?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because our father told him you had abandoned the child.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“And Ethan believed him?”

“No.”

Daniel paused.

“He didn’t believe him.”

“Then why?”

His voice became quieter.

“Because the night he found out you were pregnant, he went to look for you.”

“He was already too late.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“Our father stopped him.”

“And then he told Ethan that you had chosen another man.”

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel continued:

“Ethan believed you had married someone else.”

My heart pounded.

“Then why did he come back five years later?”

Daniel gave me a sad smile.

“Because he finally discovered the truth.”

I looked toward Emma’s bedroom.

My daughter was asleep.

Safe.

Happy.

Loved.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“He knows Emma is his daughter.”

My hand froze on the doorknob.

“Since when?”

“Since before he became your boss.”

I turned toward him.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Because he wasn’t sure whether you would let him into her life.”

“And now?”

He looked at me.

“Now he’s decided he’s going to earn the right.”

For the first time in five years, I didn’t know what to feel.

Because the man I had spent years believing had rejected me…

had apparently been searching for me all along.

And somewhere inside his office, Ethan Cole was looking at an old photograph of a woman he had once called temporary—

while realizing that the little girl with her eyes was the daughter he had never been allowed to know.
