PART 2: The Lawyer Who Returned Without Love

Three years.

That was how long it took for Gabriel Fuentes to finally understand what I had already accepted.

Losing me was not the consequence of one decision.

It was the result of every choice he made after that.

The airport was crowded, but somehow we stood in a silence that felt separate from the world.

Gabriel looked at me like he was searching for the woman who used to wait outside his office.

The woman who believed his promises.

The woman who thought love meant standing beside someone no matter how difficult things became.

But she was gone.

“I looked for you,” he said.

I remained silent.

“I called your old number.”

“I sent messages.”

“I asked people from the legal community.”

I looked at him.

“And?”

He lowered his eyes.

“And nobody knew where you went.”

A small smile appeared on my face.

“That was the point.”

His expression tightened.

“Inés…”

“No, Gabriel.”

My voice was calm.

“That’s the difference between us.”

“What difference?”

“When you left me, you expected me to stay where you abandoned me.”

He froze.

“But I didn’t.”

The announcement for another flight echoed through the terminal.

People walked around us.

Families hugged.

Couples said goodbye.

And there we were.

Two people who once planned a future together.

Now standing like strangers.

Gabriel swallowed.

“I made a mistake.”

For three years, I imagined hearing those words.

I imagined anger.

I imagined satisfaction.

I imagined finally feeling that the universe had balanced something.

But when he said it…

I felt nothing.

Not happiness.

Not revenge.

Just emptiness.

“A mistake?”

He nodded quickly.

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting my principles.”

I looked at him.

“And now?”

His eyes became red.

“Now I know I protected the wrong thing.”

I didn’t answer.

Because that was the truth.

Gabriel had not betrayed me because he was cruel.

That would have been easier.

He betrayed me because he convinced himself he was doing the right thing.

And sometimes, the people who hurt you the most are the ones who believe they are justified.

“After I left,” I said quietly, “what happened to Camila?”

His face changed.

That was enough.

I already knew there was a story.

“She was cleared.”

“Of course.”

“But…”

I waited.

Gabriel looked away.

“The case was not what she told me.”

I remained silent.

He continued.

“She had hidden information from me.”

The irony almost made me laugh.

The man who refused to defend my father because of honesty and principles had trusted someone who lied to him.

“What happened after that?”

“She left the firm.”

“And you?”

He took a breath.

“I realized I had spent years believing I understood people.”

He looked at me.

“But I didn’t understand you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You understood me.”

“You just didn’t choose me.”

That sentence broke whatever confidence he had left.

Because it was impossible to argue.

The truth was simple.

He knew my father.

He knew me.

He knew what losing that trial would mean.

He knew exactly how much I needed him.

And he still walked away.

A voice announced my boarding time.

My flight was approaching.

Gabriel looked toward the screen.

Then back at me.

“You’re leaving again?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

I smiled slightly.

“Somewhere I should have gone three years ago.”

He looked hurt.

“Can I come with you?”

For the first time, I saw the old Gabriel.

The man who used to hold my hand.

The man who promised me forever.

But I also remembered the woman sitting alone beside my father’s hospital bed.

The woman who had no one because the person she trusted most chose distance.

“No.”

The answer came gently.

But firmly.

His face fell.

“Because you don’t love me anymore?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“Because I finally love myself enough not to return to the place where I broke.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

And for a moment, he looked exactly like the man I remembered.

Not the lawyer.

Not the man everyone admired.

Just Gabriel.

Someone who finally understood what he had lost.

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“You forgive me?”

I thought about my father’s last words.

Don’t hate him.

He had no obligation to help us.

My father had been right.

Forgiveness did not mean returning.

It did not mean forgetting.

It only meant refusing to carry someone else’s choices forever.

“Yes.”

Gabriel looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

A tear escaped his eye.

“But forgiveness is not another chance.”

The boarding announcement repeated.

I picked up my bag.

Three years ago, I left because I had lost everything.

Today, I was leaving because I had found myself.

As I walked toward the gate, Gabriel remained behind.

The man who once taught me that principles mattered finally learned the hardest lesson.

Principles without compassion are just excuses.

And love without courage is just a promise that disappears when it becomes inconvenient.

Years later, people still asked me if I regretted leaving Gabriel Fuentes.

My answer never changed.

I regretted waiting for him to choose me.

I never regretted choosing myself.
