Part 2: The Boy Who Offered Me A New Future

The moment my hand rested in Nicolás Torres’ palm, the entire room changed.

The music was still playing.
The glasses were still on the tables.
People were still whispering.

But everything felt different.

Because for the first time that night, I was no longer the girl waiting to be chosen.

I was the girl who had made a choice.

Nicolás did not pull me closer or try to make a show of it.
He simply held my hand firmly, as if telling everyone without words that I was not someone to be humiliated.

Diego stared at us.

I could see the confusion on his face.

Maybe he expected me to cry.
Maybe he expected me to run away.
Maybe he expected me to stay invisible, just like I had done for three years.

But he never expected me to stand beside someone else.

“Martina…” Diego finally said.

His voice was softer than before.

The same voice that used to calm me when I was nervous before exams.
The same voice that once promised me forever.

I looked at him.

For a moment, my heart betrayed me.

Because no matter how much he had hurt me, I was still the girl who loved him.

But then I looked at Camila standing beside him.

I saw the ring on her finger.

My ring.

And the last piece of my hope disappeared.

“What?” I asked quietly.

Diego opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Camila looked between us.

She was smart.
She understood.

“You two know each other?” she asked.

The room became silent.

I watched Diego hesitate.

That hesitation hurt more than the kiss.

Because even after everything, even after he had destroyed three years of my life in front of everyone, he was still thinking about hiding me.

I smiled bitterly.

“Yes,” I answered before he could.

“Martina…” Diego whispered.

I looked directly at Camila.

“Diego and I were together for three years.”

A wave of shock spread through the room.

Someone dropped a glass.

Someone else whispered, “What?”

Camila’s expression changed.

She looked at Diego.

“You never told me.”

Diego immediately stepped forward.

“It’s not what you think.”

I almost laughed.

Not what she thought?

What else could it be?

He had kissed another girl.
He had given her my ring.
He had asked her to be his girlfriend.

But somehow, he still wanted an explanation.

“I think it’s exactly what she thinks,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

For years, I had been afraid of this moment.

I was afraid people would judge me.
I was afraid they would laugh.
I was afraid Diego would lose his reputation if they knew about me.

But standing there, I realized something.

I had spent three years protecting someone who never protected me.

Nicolás looked at me silently.

He did not interrupt.
He did not speak for me.

He simply stayed there.

And somehow, that gave me more courage than any words could have.

“Why?” Diego finally asked.

His eyes were filled with something I couldn’t understand.

Anger?
Regret?
Fear?

“Why did you do this?”

I stared at him.

“You’re asking me?”

His face changed.

“I thought you knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That it was just a game.”

I looked at the ring on Camila’s hand.

“A game?”

My voice trembled.

“Diego, that ring was something we chose together.”

His expression froze.

“You remembered the engraving. You remembered the date we met. You remembered everything.”

I swallowed hard.

“You didn’t forget me tonight.”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

This wasn’t a mistake.

It was a decision.

Diego lowered his head.

For the first time that night, he looked ashamed.

But it was too late.

The person who loved him had already broken.

The next morning, rumors spread throughout the school.

Some people defended Diego.
Some people blamed him.
Some people said it was just a misunderstanding.

But nobody knew the truth.

Nobody knew about the nights I waited for his messages.
Nobody knew about the promises whispered when nobody was watching.
Nobody knew how many times I chose him over myself.

And maybe that was the hardest part.

Not losing him.

But realizing I had loved a version of him that only existed when we were alone.

A week later, graduation ended.

Everyone began preparing for their new lives.

I received my admission documents.

Tsinghua University.

The same city Nicolás would attend.

The same opportunity I once planned to share with Diego.

But now, it was mine.

Not ours.

Mine.

On the afternoon before leaving, I found Nicolás sitting alone on the university courtyard steps.

“You really meant it?” I asked.

He looked up.

“Which part?”

“Everything.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

“I noticed you long before that night.”

I froze.

“What?”

He looked away.

“You always helped people even when nobody noticed. You stayed late after class to tutor others. You gave your notes away. You smiled even when you were tired.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Because you were looking at someone else.”

Those words hurt.

But not in the same way Diego’s words hurt.

This pain was different.

It was the pain of realizing how blind I had been.

I had spent years chasing someone who kept me hidden, while someone else quietly saw me.

Before we left, Nicolás handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?”

“Open it when we arrive.”

I looked at him suspiciously.

“Nicolás…”

“Martina, for three years you waited for someone to choose you.”

He paused.

“I hope from now on you remember that you are worth choosing.”

That night, on the train leaving my hometown, I finally opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It was taken at the graduation party.

Not the moment Diego kissed Camila.

Not the moment everyone was celebrating.

It was a picture of me sitting alone in the corner.

But someone had written a small note on the back.

“I saw you trying not to cry.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Underneath that sentence was another line.

“And I promised myself that if you ever looked my way, I would never make you feel invisible.”

I stared out the window as the city lights disappeared behind me.

For the first time in years, I wasn’t afraid of losing someone.

Because I finally understood something.

Some people leave your life to make room for the person who was always meant to find you.

But I didn’t know yet that my new beginning at Tsinghua would uncover a secret about Diego’s betrayal that would change everything I believed about that night…
