PART 2: THE DAY JULIÁN STONE LOST THE RIGHT TO CALL HER HIS WIFE

Julián Stone never noticed me.

Not because I was far away.

Not because I was hiding.

But because for three years, he had trained himself not to look for me.

In his world, I had become a forgotten chapter.

A mistake.

A responsibility he had already abandoned.

Standing inside that small security office at the station, I watched the man I once loved gently place his coat over Victoria Lane’s shoulders.

That simple movement hurt more than any insult.

Because I remembered another winter.

A winter many years ago.

When I was a child, I had fallen into the river because other children pushed my things into the water.

Everyone laughed.

Everyone watched.

Except Julián.

He jumped in without hesitation.

He carried me out while shivering from the cold.

Then he turned around and forced those children to apologize.

Back then, I thought he was my hero.

I thought heroes never changed.

I was wrong.

The man who saved me from the river was not the same man who pushed me into loneliness.

“Julián.”

Victoria’s voice pulled me back.

“I’m sorry for making you come all this way.”

He smiled gently.

“It’s okay.”

That smile.

The same smile I once dreamed of receiving.

But now it belonged to someone else.

I lowered my head and held my bag tighter.

Inside was the reason I returned.

The medical report.

The documents.

And the photograph of my daughter.

My little girl.

The only person in this world who gave me a reason to continue.

I had named her Lily.

Because when she was born, the doctor placed her in my arms and said:

“Look at her eyes. She looks exactly like you.”

I cried.

Not because I was sad.

Because for the first time in my life, someone belonged completely to me.

Someone who would never make me feel like a burden.

Someone who would never choose another person over me.

Three years ago, when I arrived at San Marcos Village, I was broken.

I had no husband beside me.

No family.

No friends.

Only a baby growing inside me.

Everyone said I was abandoned.

Everyone whispered that General Stone had sent me away because he never wanted me.

At first, I cried every night.

I waited for a letter.

A phone call.

Anything.

But nothing came.

Then Lily was born.

And slowly, I understood something.

I didn’t need Julián to survive.

I had spent my whole life waiting for someone to protect me.

But now I was the person protecting someone else.

I learned how to work.

I learned how to manage money.

I learned how to make decisions.

I learned how to stand on my own feet.

The woman who left the capital three years ago was gone.

She had been replaced by someone who no longer begged anyone to stay.

Outside the security office, Julián suddenly turned his head.

For a second, his eyes met mine.

Only a second.

But his expression changed.

Confusion.

Recognition.

Shock.

“Clara?”

My body became completely still.

I had not heard him say my name in three years.

Not with warmth.

Not with concern.

Not even with anger.

Just surprise.

Victoria followed his gaze.

Her face changed slightly.

“You know her?”

Julián didn’t answer immediately.

He walked toward me.

Slowly.

As if afraid that I would disappear.

“Clara Hayes?”

I looked at him calmly.

“Yes.”

His eyes moved over me.

My simple clothes.

My shorter hair.

My quiet expression.

He seemed unable to connect this woman with the girl who used to chase after him.

“You came back?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I almost laughed.

The question was so strange.

After three years of silence, he asked why I didn’t tell him.

“I didn’t think you needed to know.”

Those words made his face change.

The old Clara would never have said that.

The old Clara would have cried the moment she saw him.

She would have asked:

“Why didn’t you come find me?”

“Why didn’t you miss me?”

“Why did you abandon me?”

But now…

I had no questions left.

Julián looked uncomfortable.

“Clara, about what happened…”

“Don’t.”

I interrupted.

His voice stopped.

“I don’t want to talk about the past.”

“But…”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“The past already gave me its answer.”

Silence surrounded us.

Then his eyes fell on my bag.

A corner of the photograph inside was visible.

A small child’s face.

Julián froze.

“What is that?”

I immediately covered it.

“Nothing.”

But it was too late.

His expression changed.

“Clara.”

His voice became serious.

“Who is that child?”

I looked at him.

For three years, he never asked where I was.

For three years, he never wondered if I was alive.

But now, one photograph was enough to make him nervous.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Julián, we should go.”

But he didn’t move.

His eyes stayed on me.

“Clara.”

“Tell me.”

I was silent for a long time.

Then I slowly answered:

“She is my daughter.”

The color disappeared from his face.

Your daughter.

Not our daughter.

Not his.

Just mine.

But then he noticed something.

The child’s eyes.

The familiar shape.

The same eyes he had seen every morning in the mirror.

His breathing became uneven.

“How old is she?”

I looked at him.

“Two and a half.”

The station became silent.

Julián’s face turned pale.

Because he finally understood.

Three years ago.

When he signed the order sending me away.

When he chose Victoria.

When he decided I was only an inconvenience.

I was carrying his child.

His daughter.

The child he never knew existed.

“Clara…”

His voice broke.

But I stepped back.

“No.”

He stopped.

“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore.”

His eyes filled with confusion and pain.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked at him quietly.

Then said the one sentence he would remember for the rest of his life:

“Because three years ago, when I needed you to believe in me…”

“You chose not to.”

And for the first time since we met…

Julián Stone had no answer.
