PART 2: THE TRUTH JAVIER NEVER IMAGINED

For three days, Javier Salcedo stopped being the man who always had an answer.

For the first time, I saw him walk around the house with a worried expression on his face.

His phone never stopped ringing.

His colleagues from the military base kept calling.

His superiors demanded explanations.

And Clara Morales, the woman who had always known how to make him feel needed, now seemed to have no words.

I watched everything from a distance.

Not because it didn’t hurt.

But because I had already cried enough in my first life.

I had spent years begging Javier to look at me the way he used to.

Now I no longer needed him to choose me.

I needed to take back everything they had stolen from me.

That night, Javier entered the bedroom.

The same bedroom where, in my first life, I had spent countless nights waiting for him to return from his missions.

But this time, I was sitting on the bed reading documents.

He slowly closed the door.

“Elena.”

I didn’t look up.

“What do you need?”

His expression changed.

Before, he would have expected me to run toward him.

To ask if he was okay.

To forget my own pain and take care of his.

But that woman no longer existed.

“Why did you do this?”

I turned a page calmly.

“Do what?”

“Go to my commander.”

I looked at him.

“Protect my family.”

His jaw tightened.

“I am your family.”

A faint smile appeared on my lips.

“Are you sure?”

Silence filled the room.

Because I had heard those same words thousands of times in my first life.

“Javier is my husband.”

“Javier will come back.”

“Javier will choose me.”

But reality had been different.

A husband doesn’t disappear for years.

A husband doesn’t allow another woman to take his place.

A husband doesn’t let the mother of his child become a stranger.

“Elena, Clara saved my life.”

I sighed.

There it was.

The same sentence.

The excuse that destroyed our marriage.

“And I gave you eight years of my life.”

Javier froze.

“I stood beside you when nobody believed in you. I left my own dreams to follow you. I cared for your parents. I waited every night for someone who never came back.”

My eyes met his.

“But apparently saving you once was worth more than loving you every single day.”

For the first time, Javier looked away.

He didn’t answer.

And that confirmed what I already knew.

He knew I was right.

The next morning, I received an unexpected visitor.

It was Javier’s commander.

He wasn’t wearing his uniform.

He wasn’t there as a superior.

He came carrying a folder.

“Mrs. Martín, we need to talk.”

I invited him inside.

He sat down and slowly opened the folder.

“The investigation has progressed.”

I remained calm.

“And what did you discover?”

He placed several documents on the table.

“Clara Morales didn’t only receive money from Javier.”

I looked at the papers.

“What does that mean?”

The commander took a deep breath.

“She has been involved in financial movements for years.”

My fingers stopped moving.

“Since when?”

“Since shortly after the mission where she supposedly saved Javier.”

A chill ran through me.

Everything suddenly started making sense.

Clara appearing everywhere.

Her closeness to Javier.

Her ability to make him feel guilty.

None of it had happened by accident.

“Did Javier know?”

The commander shook his head.

“We are not certain yet.”

But I knew something.

Javier had been manipulated.

However, that didn’t erase his choices.

Because a person can be deceived.

But they also decide who they abandon.

That afternoon, Clara appeared at my door.

But she wasn’t wearing the same calm smile as before.

Now she looked nervous.

“Elena, we need to talk.”

I let her inside.

She sat across from me.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

I looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re destroying Javier’s career.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I leaned closer.

“I’m stopping someone else from destroying his life.”

Clara tightened her lips.

“Javier needs me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“Javier needed a reason to feel like a hero. And you gave him one.”

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“Be careful with your words.”

I smiled.

“I am very careful now. Much more careful. Because once, I trusted all of you.”

Clara stood up.

“Javier will never forgive you.”

I looked directly at her.

“That’s the problem.”

I paused.

“In my first life, I spent years waiting for Javier to forgive me for things I never did.”

Her face lost color.

“What are you saying?”

I opened the door.

“I’m saying that this time, I don’t need his forgiveness.”

That night, something happened that had never happened before.

Javier came home before midnight.

But he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t defending Clara.

He looked broken.

He held an envelope in his hand.

“Elena…”

I looked at him.

“What happened?”

He placed the envelope on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank transfers.

And a recorded conversation.

Clara’s voice appeared in the report.

A conversation where she spoke with her father about keeping Javier “emotionally attached” to her.

My hands went cold.

Even though I already knew the truth, I was shocked.

Because Clara hadn’t only manipulated money.

She had built an entire lie.

Javier slowly sat down.

“All this time…”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was repaying a debt to her.”

I looked at the man I had loved for eight years.

But I no longer felt the same love.

I only saw someone finally facing reality.

“Javier.”

He raised his eyes.

“Do you still love me?”

The question hung in the air.

In my first life, I would have answered immediately.

I would have said yes.

Even while breaking apart.

But now, I took a deep breath.

“I loved the man you were before you forgot who stood beside you.”

Javier closed his eyes.

“So it’s too late?”

I looked at my stomach.

Our child was still with me.

The only part of this story that truly mattered.

“To erase your mistakes, I don’t know.”

I stood up.

“But to save yourself, maybe you still have time.”

Javier stared at me.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t trying to get him back.

I was letting him face his own decisions.

And just when I thought the truth had finally been revealed…

My phone received a message from an unknown number.

There was only one picture.

A picture of my unborn child.

But underneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold:

“If you want Javier Salcedo’s child to be safe… stop investigating.”

And then I understood something.

Clara Morales was not the end.

She was only the first piece of something much bigger.
