PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED WAITING FOR JULIAN

That night I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was afraid of losing him.
But because for the first time, I wondered if I had already lost him a long time ago.

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.

Habit.

For years, I had woken up early to prepare breakfast for Julian.

Even on days when he left without saying goodbye.

Even on days when he came home late and barely looked at me.

I walked into the kitchen.

I opened the refrigerator.

Inside were the ingredients I had bought three days earlier.

His favorite food.

I stared at them for a while.

Then I closed the door.

I didn’t cook.

For the first time in years, I made breakfast only for myself.

A simple coffee.

A piece of bread.

And somehow, it tasted different.

Maybe because I wasn’t preparing it for someone who didn’t appreciate it.

At ten in the morning, Julian finally came home.

I heard the key turn in the lock.

The sound used to make me happy.

That day, it only made me tired.

He walked inside carrying a small suitcase.

Three days away.

Three days of ignoring my calls.

Three days of making me wonder what I had done wrong.

He looked exhausted.

But not guilty.

That was the first thing I noticed.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“Julian.”

We stood there like strangers who had accidentally entered the same house.

He put the suitcase down.

“I didn’t want things to become like this.”

I smiled slightly.

“Neither did I.”

He looked surprised.

Maybe he expected anger.

Maybe he expected tears.

Maybe he expected me to beg him to stay.

But I had no energy left for that.

“I think we need to talk.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

We sat at the dining table.

The same table where we had eaten countless meals.

The same place where I had waited for him many nights.

Julian crossed his arms.

“Our marriage hasn’t been good for a long time.”

“I know.”

Again, my answer surprised him.

“I feel like we are just living together.”

“I know.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Why do you keep saying that?”

“Because it’s true.”

The silence became heavy.

Julian looked away.

“I need space.”

I looked at him.

“Space?”

“Yes.”

“For three days?”

“No.”

He sighed.

“For longer.”

I nodded slowly.

“How long?”

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I lowered my eyes.

“Julian, do you remember the last time we had dinner together?”

He frowned.

“What?”

“The last time we sat down and talked about our day.”

He didn’t respond.

“Do you remember?”

His silence hurt more than any argument.

Because I already knew.

He didn’t remember.

“I don’t think we need more space.”

I looked at him calmly.

“I think we need honesty.”

His expression changed.

“Claire…”

“No, let me finish.”

My voice was quiet.

“But not because I want to fight.”

I took a breath.

“I just want to know when you stopped choosing me.”

The question stayed between us.

For several seconds, Julian said nothing.

Then he rubbed his forehead.

“You are making this more complicated than it is.”

I almost laughed.

More complicated?

My husband disappeared for three days.

Ignored every call.

Then came back asking for time.

And somehow, I was the one complicating things.

“Maybe.”

I stood up.

“But at least I’m finally paying attention.”

That afternoon, Julian left again.

He said he needed time to think.

I didn’t stop him.

I didn’t ask where he was going.

I didn’t ask who he was with.

Because something inside me had changed.

Before, every unanswered call felt like a wound.

Now, it felt like information.

The next few days passed quietly.

I went to work.

I met friends.

I started exercising again.

Small things.

Things I used to do before becoming Julian’s wife.

One evening, Lily came to my apartment.

She looked around.

“Where is Julian?”

I poured tea.

“Taking time.”

She frowned.

“Taking time?”

I nodded.

“He asked for it.”

Lily stared at me.

“Are you okay?”

I thought about the question.

And surprisingly, I was.

“I think I am.”

She sat beside me.

“Claire, can I tell you something?”

“Yes.”

“I haven’t said this before because you loved him.”

I looked at her.

“But I think you have been alone in this marriage for a long time.”

I didn’t answer.

Because deep down, I knew she was right.

That night, I received a message from Julian.

“We need to meet tomorrow.”

I looked at the screen.

A few months ago, I would have immediately replied.

This time, I waited.

Then I typed:

“Okay.”

The next day, we met at the same café where we had our first date.

The place where Julian once promised me:

“I will always take care of you.”

Funny.

Promises sounded beautiful when people made them.

But actions were the only thing that remained.

Julian arrived ten minutes late.

I noticed.

Because before, I always arrived early to wait for him.

He sat down.

He looked nervous.

“I’ve thought a lot.”

I waited.

“I think we rushed into marriage.”

I nodded.

“And?”

He hesitated.

“I don’t know if I still feel the same way.”

I looked at him.

There it was.

The sentence I had secretly feared.

But strangely…

It didn’t break me.

Because the truth was finally outside my head.

“Julian.”

“Yes?”

“I have one question.”

He looked at me.

“If you hadn’t asked for time, would you ever have realized we were losing each other?”

He froze.

He didn’t answer.

And I understood.

Maybe he never would have.

I placed my coffee down.

“Thank you.”

He looked confused.

“For what?”

“For finally being honest.”

I stood up.

“Claire, wait.”

I turned around.

“What?”

His eyes were full of uncertainty.

“Are you really okay with this?”

I looked at the man I had loved for seven years.

The man I once believed was my whole future.

Then I smiled.

“That’s the strange part, Julian.”

“I think I am.”

I walked away.

But I didn’t know that three days later, Julian would come to my office.

Not to apologize.

Not to ask for another chance.

He came because he had discovered something about my identity that would completely change the way he saw me.

Something I had hidden from him since the day we met.
