PART 2: THE AUDIT THAT EXPOSED MY HUSBAND’S EMPIRE

The next morning, Daniel woke up believing everything was normal.

That was the most surprising part.

He kissed my forehead before leaving.

The same gesture he had repeated for five years.

The same gesture that once made me feel loved.

Now it only reminded me how easily someone could pretend.

“Don’t wait for me tonight.”

He adjusted his suit.

“Another client dinner?”

I asked calmly.

He smiled.

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“Work hard.”

He didn’t notice anything.

Not my expression.

Not my silence.

Not the fact that I was no longer the wife waiting at home.

Because Daniel had spent five years underestimating me.

He thought Evelyn Zhao was only the daughter of a powerful family.

A protected woman who knew nothing about business.

He forgot something important.

Before I became his wife, I was trained by my father.

I understood every department of Zhao International.

I knew every financial report.

Every contract.

Every hidden risk.

And now I was looking at his company with different eyes.

Not as his wife.

As an auditor.

At nine in the morning, my father’s legal team arrived.

Mr. Chen placed several folders on my desk.

“Miss Zhao.”

I opened the first document.

“Start with the last twelve months.”

He nodded.

“All transactions approved by Daniel Zhou.”

The first few pages looked normal.

Marketing expenses.

Supplier contracts.

Investment proposals.

Then I saw it.

A payment.

A large amount.

Sent to a company registered only three months earlier.

I looked at the name.

“River Crown Property Management.”

My fingers stopped.

The same apartment complex.

The same building where Daniel had promised he was making an investment.

“Find the owner of this company.”

Mr. Chen nodded.

“Already checked.”

He placed another document in front of me.

My eyes narrowed.

The registered representative was Sophia Su.

The new marketing director.

The woman my husband hugged in his office.

The woman he claimed was only a colleague.

I continued reading.

The apartment purchase.

The renovations.

The furniture.

Everything had been paid through company funds.

Not personal money.

Company funds.

Money that belonged to shareholders.

Including me.

I leaned back.

So this wasn’t only betrayal.

It was fraud.

That afternoon, I returned to Zhao International.

Not secretly this time.

The receptionist immediately stood up when she saw me.

Her face changed.

“Miss Zhao.”

I smiled politely.

“Good afternoon.”

The entire floor became silent.

Everyone knew who I was.

The president’s daughter.

The major shareholder.

The person Daniel had hidden behind a simple title:

“my wife.”

I walked directly to the executive meeting room.

Daniel was inside.

Sophia was beside him.

The moment they saw me, both froze.

Daniel stood.

“Evelyn?”

Sophia immediately stepped back.

“What are you doing here?”

I placed a folder on the table.

“Working.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

I looked around the room.

“Starting today, I am leading an internal audit.”

His face changed.

“An audit?”

“Yes.”

He laughed nervously.

“Why?”

I opened the folder.

“Because several financial operations from the past year require clarification.”

Sophia’s expression became tense.

Daniel looked at her.

Then back at me.

“You don’t trust me?”

I looked directly at him.

“This isn’t about trust.”

I paused.

“It’s about numbers.”

That sentence made him uncomfortable.

Because numbers didn’t care about emotions.

Numbers didn’t care about promises.

Numbers only showed the truth.

The meeting continued for two hours.

Every question I asked became more uncomfortable.

Every document revealed another problem.

Finally, Sophia couldn’t stay silent.

“Maybe this is unnecessary.”

I turned toward her.

“Why?”

She smiled.

“Because Daniel has managed this company successfully for years.”

I nodded.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You’re defending a company you joined one month ago.”

Her face changed.

The room became quiet.

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“Evelyn, enough.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“Not enough.”

I placed a photo on the table.

The picture from his office.

Him and Sophia.

Then I placed the apartment records beside it.

Then the financial transfers.

“I came here yesterday disguised as an auditor.”

Daniel’s expression froze.

“You saw?”

“Everything.”

Sophia became pale.

“Evelyn…”

I looked at her.

“Don’t.”

Because for years, I had considered her a person who needed help.

Now I saw her clearly.

Someone who knew exactly what she was doing.

Daniel stood up.

“You misunderstood.”

I smiled.

“The interesting thing about audits is that they don’t misunderstand.”

I pointed at the documents.

“They verify.”

Silence.

Then Daniel lowered his voice.

“Let’s talk privately.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“This is between us.”

I shook my head.

“Not anymore.”

I looked around the room.

“Because you didn’t only betray your marriage.”

“You used company resources.”

“You endangered shareholders.”

“And you forgot that the woman you lied to was one of the people who could investigate you.”

For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.

Not because he lost me.

Because he realized he could lose everything else.

That evening, the board received the preliminary audit report.

By midnight, everyone knew.

The next morning, Daniel was removed from his executive position pending investigation.

Sophia was suspended.

But before leaving the company, Daniel sent me one message.

“Evelyn, please. We need to talk.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“I never married you for your family’s power.”

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what someone would say after being exposed.

I replied with only one sentence.

“Then why did you spend five years benefiting from it?”

He didn’t answer.

The following day, my father finally learned everything.

He came to my office.

He looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Just disappointed.

“I should have seen it.”

I shook my head.

“No, Dad.”

“You trusted him because you believed people could change.”

My father looked at me.

“And you?”

I looked at the city outside the window.

“I believed love was enough.”

A pause.

“Now I know respect matters more.”

But neither of us knew the most shocking discovery was still waiting.

Because during the full audit, my team found a hidden transfer from three years earlier.

A transfer made before Sophia appeared.

A transfer that proved Daniel’s betrayal had started long before I ever walked into his office.

And the person who helped him hide it…

was someone I never expected.
