PART 2: THE BROTHER HE NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE

Adrian froze.

For four years, I had imagined the moment he would see me again.

I imagined anger.

I imagined tears.

I imagined myself asking him why he destroyed everything we had.

But reality was different.

When Nathan Cole stood behind me and calmly said those two words…

“Her husband.”

The only thing I felt was peace.

Adrian’s face changed completely.

The arrogance disappeared.

The confidence disappeared.

For the first time, he looked like the eighteen-year-old boy who had run away from responsibility.

“Your husband?”

His voice was almost a whisper.

Nathan walked forward.

He placed his hand gently on my shoulder.

A simple gesture.

But it carried more weight than all the promises Adrian had made four years earlier.

“Yes.”

Nathan looked directly at his younger brother.

“My wife.”

The silence around us was heavy.

Adrian stared at me.

Then at Nathan.

Then back at me.

As if he was trying to understand a reality that didn’t fit the story he had created in his mind.

“Elena…”

I looked at him.

“Mr. Cole.”

He flinched.

Because once, that name had been impossible between us.

Once, I had called him Adrian with love.

Now I couldn’t even give him that.

“When did this happen?”

Nathan answered before me.

“Two years ago.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

“Two years?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

I almost smiled.

“You left for four years.”

“You didn’t tell me you were leaving.”

“You didn’t tell me you were choosing Lily.”

“You didn’t tell me anything.”

My words were calm.

That seemed to hurt him more.

Because anger would have meant I still cared.

But calm meant I had moved on.

Adrian looked at Nathan.

“You knew?”

Nathan’s expression didn’t change.

“Yes.”

“And you married her?”

“Yes.”

The answer was simple.

Certain.

Adrian laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“I can’t believe this.”

I tilted my head.

“Why?”

“Because…”

He stopped.

Because he couldn’t say it.

Because the truth was embarrassing.

He had expected me to wait.

He had expected me to remain frozen in the same place where he abandoned me.

Four years ago, he left thinking I would still belong to him when he returned.

He had forgotten something.

People could survive being abandoned.

They could rebuild.

They could become someone new.

Nathan squeezed my shoulder lightly.

“Elena, are you ready to leave?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

As we walked away, Adrian’s voice stopped me.

“Elena.”

I turned around.

For a moment, I saw regret in his eyes.

Real regret.

“Did you ever love me?”

The question surprised me.

Not because I didn’t know the answer.

Because I couldn’t believe he needed to ask.

“Yes.”

His expression softened.

Then I continued.

“I loved you more than anyone.”

A pause.

“But that was four years ago.”

His face changed.

“And now?”

I looked at Nathan.

The man who had never made me beg for a place in his life.

The man who never asked me to wait.

The man who chose me without hesitation.

“Now I love my husband.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

That night, I thought it was over.

I was wrong.

Because the next morning, the Cole family called an emergency meeting.

And this time, it wasn’t about Adrian.

It was about me.

When I arrived at the Cole family residence, Adrian was already there.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Mrs. Cole was sitting in the living room.

Beside her were several documents.

My heart tightened slightly.

“What happened?”

Nathan held my hand.

“Don’t worry.”

But I could tell from his expression that something serious had happened.

Mrs. Cole looked at me.

“Elena, there is something you need to know.”

I sat down.

“What?”

She took a deep breath.

“Four years ago, when Adrian left…”

Her voice became heavy.

“He didn’t just leave you.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

She looked at Adrian.

He avoided my eyes.

“Adrian lied to everyone.”

Silence.

“He told people that the engagement was cancelled because you two weren’t compatible.”

I clenched my fingers.

“But that wasn’t true.”

Mrs. Cole placed a document on the table.

“This was found yesterday.”

I picked it up.

It was a letter.

Written by Adrian.

My hands became cold as I read the first line.

It was dated the night before he left.

The letter said:

“I know Elena will hate me, but I can’t abandon Lily.”

I froze.

Because that wasn’t what shocked me.

The next sentence was worse.

“I need everyone to believe she was the problem.”

I looked up.

Adrian’s face was pale.

“Why?”

My voice was quiet.

“Why did you have to destroy my reputation?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

After four years…

he finally had no excuse.

Mrs. Cole looked at me.

“He was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“That if people knew the truth, they would hate him.”

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“So he made everyone hate me instead.”

No one answered.

Because everyone knew.

That was exactly what happened.

The girl who was abandoned became the villain.

The boy who betrayed her became the victim.

And Adrian lived comfortably with that story for four years.

Until now.

I stood up.

“I don’t need an apology.”

Adrian looked at me.

“But Elena…”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You don’t miss me.”

“You miss the version of me that was waiting.”

His eyes turned red.

“And that person is gone.”

I walked toward the door.

Nathan followed.

Before leaving, I heard Adrian ask:

“Will you ever forgive me?”

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

“Maybe.”

Silence.

“But forgiveness doesn’t mean returning.”

Then I left.

Years later, people would still talk about the day Adrian Cole returned to New York and discovered his former fiancée had become his sister-in-law.

But what they never understood was this:

Adrian didn’t lose Elena when she married Nathan.

He lost her the night he decided she would wait for him.

Because the hardest thing to recover is not love.

It is the trust of someone who once loved you completely.
