PART 3: THE SEAT NEXT TO HIM THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Marcus stared at me.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

The confident smile he had worn at home disappeared completely.

His hand remained frozen above the tablet.

“Claire?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

I placed my carry-on bag in the overhead compartment and calmly sat down in seat 7C.

“Yes?”

He looked around quickly.

Almost as if he expected someone to explain why I was there.

“What are you doing here?”

I fastened my seat belt.

“Traveling.”

His eyes moved from me to my ticket.

Then to the seats beside him.

7A.

7B.

The seats he had carefully chosen.

The seats he thought would take him and Chloe away without anyone knowing.

“I thought you were going to Chicago,” I said.

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But after twelve years together, I noticed everything.

The tiny movement in his jaw.

The way he avoided eye contact.

The way his fingers tightened around his phone.

“I… there was a change in plans.”

“A change?”

“Yes. The client moved the meeting.”

I nodded.

“Interesting.”

He stared at me.

“What?”

I smiled faintly.

“Nothing.”

The flight attendant began the safety announcement.

Passengers settled into their seats.

But Marcus couldn’t relax.

Because he knew.

He knew I wasn’t someone who appeared somewhere by accident.

He knew every decision I made usually had a reason.

For twelve years, he had seen me manage our home, our daughter, and my design company.

He knew I paid attention.

He just never believed I was paying attention to him.

The plane began moving toward the runway.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Claire, can we talk?”

I looked out the window.

“About what?”

His voice lowered.

“You know what.”

“No.”

That answer surprised him.

“No?”

“No.”

I turned back.

“If you have something to say, say it.”

His expression became uncomfortable.

Not guilty.

Uncomfortable.

There was a difference.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was worried.

The plane took off.

For a few minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared on the screen.

I didn’t need to see the name.

I already knew.

Chloe.

Marcus immediately turned the phone away.

Too late.

I had seen enough.

“Is she waiting for you in Miami?”

His entire body went still.

“What?”

I smiled.

“You heard me.”

“Claire…”

“No.”

I stopped him.

“Don’t insult me by pretending you don’t understand.”

His face hardened.

“You followed me?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

I looked at him calmly.

“That’s the difference between us, Marcus.”

“You thought hiding something meant it disappeared.”

He stared at me.

“What do you want?”

The question almost made me laugh.

After twelve years.

After a child.

After everything.

That was his first question.

Not:

How did I hurt you?

Not:

Can we fix this?

Just:

What do you want?

“I want honesty.”

He looked away.

The silence answered for him.

Three hours into the flight, the plane landed in Miami.

Marcus stood quickly.

He wanted distance.

But before he could leave, I spoke.

“Marcus.”

He stopped.

I handed him a small envelope.

His expression changed.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

He hesitated.

Then he did.

Inside was a copy of a legal notice.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?”

“A preliminary asset review.”

His face changed.

“Claire…”

“I hired an attorney.”

The color drained from his face.

“You’re divorcing me?”

I looked at him.

“You started that process six months ago.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

I tilted my head.

“Really?”

Then I showed him my phone.

The investigator’s report.

The photographs.

The messages.

The hotel records.

For the first time since I met him, Marcus looked completely lost.

“You hired someone to investigate me?”

“I hired someone to find the truth.”

The people around us walked past.

Suitcases rolling.

Announcements echoing.

A normal airport morning.

Except our marriage had just ended in the middle of the terminal.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Claire, this isn’t what you think.”

I almost smiled.

“Then tell me what I think.”

He had no answer.

Because there was no version of the story where six months of lies became a misunderstanding.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Chloe.

He rejected the call.

A second later, another message appeared.

His face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Marcus?”

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

The message was short.

But enough.

Why isn’t Claire answering my messages? You said she didn’t know.

I looked at him.

And for the first time, Marcus understood something.

The woman he had been hiding from his wife…

Had just revealed that she knew exactly who I was.

But there was something else Marcus didn’t know.

The lawyer I hired wasn’t only reviewing the divorce.

She was reviewing the company documents he had been signing for years.

Because while Marcus was busy planning a new life with Chloe…

He had unknowingly signed away the one thing he thought he controlled.
