The night before the surgery, To Van Tinh couldn’t sleep.
The small rented room was completely silent.
Only the sound of the leaking faucet in the kitchen broke the darkness.
Drop by drop.
Like a countdown.
She lay on the old sofa, one hand gently resting on her stomach.
For four months, she had known there were three lives growing inside her.
Three little hearts.
Three children who had done nothing wrong.
But every time she thought about keeping them, she remembered Tran The Kiet’s cold expression on the day they divorced.
“Van Tinh, we have already ended.”
“Don’t use a child to tie me down.”
Those words had been like a knife.
She closed her eyes.
She still remembered that day.
The divorce agreement was placed between them.
Three years of marriage.
Three years of happiness, arguments, promises, and dreams.
All reduced to several pages of paper.
She had waited for him to explain.
To tell her there was still something worth saving.
But he only signed his name.
Calmly.
Without hesitation.
Then he pushed the bank card toward her.
“Two hundred thousand.”
“At least I don’t want you to leave with nothing.”
At that moment, she finally understood.
The man she loved had already left long before their marriage officially ended.
The next morning, To Van Tinh woke up early.
She put on clean clothes.
She tied her hair.
She even applied a little makeup.
Not because she wanted to look beautiful.
But because she wanted to leave this world of pain with dignity.
At the private hospital, everything was quiet.
The nurse checked her information.
“Ms. To, are you still sure about your decision?”
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
The nurse hesitated.
“You don’t want to contact the father?”
Her fingers tightened.
“No.”
The nurse looked at her for a few seconds.
Then she nodded.
“Please wait here. The doctor will come soon.”
She sat alone in the waiting area.
Around her were couples.
A husband bringing water for his pregnant wife.
A man carefully holding his wife’s medical records.
Someone laughing while discussing baby names.
Every happy voice felt distant.
Like another world.
She lowered her head and looked at her own hands.
These hands had cooked for Tran The Kiet.
These hands had washed his clothes.
These hands had worked overtime to help him when his company was supposedly struggling.
She once believed that if she gave enough love, one day he would see her value.
But love was not a contract.
Giving everything did not guarantee receiving anything back.
“Van Tinh.”
A familiar voice suddenly called her name.
Her body froze.
She slowly raised her head.
Standing at the end of the hallway was Lam Vy.
Her best friend was breathing heavily, as if she had rushed here.
“You really came.”
To Van Tinh looked away.
“Why are you here?”
Lam Vy walked over.
Her eyes were red.
“Because I knew you would come alone.”
“I told you not to come.”
“And I told you I wouldn’t let you face this alone.”
Those words made To Van Tinh’s eyes sting.
For the past few months, she had pretended to be strong.
She told everyone she was fine.
She told everyone she had accepted it.
But in reality…
She was exhausted.
Lam Vy sat beside her.
“Have you really decided?”
To Van Tinh was silent.
After a long time, she whispered:
“I don’t know.”
That was the first time she admitted it.
“I don’t know what the right choice is.”
“I just know I can’t go back to him.”
Lam Vy held her hand.
“Then don’t think about him.”
“Think about yourself.”
“Think about what you really want.”
To Van Tinh looked down.
Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from behind.
“Van Tinh.”
Her entire body went cold.

She knew that voice.
A voice she had heard every day for three years.
A voice that once made her feel safe.
But now…
It only brought pain.
She slowly turned around.
Tran The Kiet was standing there.
His face was pale.
His eyes were fixed on her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then his gaze moved down.
To her medical documents.
Then to the appointment form in her hand.
His expression changed.
“What are you doing here?”
To Van Tinh said nothing.
He walked closer.
“Why are you in the obstetrics department?”
Silence.
Then he saw the words on the paper.
Sixteen weeks.
Three fetuses.
His face instantly lost all color.
“Three…”
His voice trembled.
“You’re pregnant?”
Lam Vy stood up immediately.
“Now you know?”
Tran The Kiet looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Lam Vy laughed bitterly.
“What do I mean?”
“Four months after divorce, you never once asked how she was.”
“You never wondered why she suddenly disappeared.”
“And now you come here asking questions?”
Tran The Kiet looked back at To Van Tinh.
His lips moved.
But no words came out.
Because for the first time…
He realized there was something he had never considered.
Maybe she wasn’t leaving because she didn’t love him.
Maybe she was leaving because she had been hurt too deeply.
“Van Tinh…”
His voice became softer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked at him.
The woman who once waited for this question.
The woman who once hoped he would care.
Was no longer there.
“Tell you?”
She smiled faintly.
“When?”
“When you were busy signing divorce papers?”
“When you told me you didn’t want anything to do with me?”
“When you gave me two hundred thousand and thought that was enough?”
Tran The Kiet’s face became painful.
“I didn’t know.”
“No.”
She nodded.
“You didn’t.”
“And I didn’t want you to know anymore.”
Those words made him freeze.
The doctor came out from the hallway.
“Ms. To Van Tinh?”
She stood up.
“Yes.”
“The operating room is ready.”
Tran The Kiet’s eyes widened.
“Operating room?”
He looked at her.
“What operation?”
No one answered.
But the panic in his eyes grew.
“Van Tinh…”
She walked past him.
For the first time in their lives together…
She didn’t stop when he called her name.
She didn’t turn around.
She didn’t wait for him to choose her.
As the operating room door slowly closed, Tran The Kiet stood outside.
And only then did he understand.
The woman who once loved him enough to sacrifice everything…
was about to make a decision that would change both of their lives forever.
But what he didn’t know was that the doctor had discovered something unusual in Van Tinh’s medical records.
Something that would make him question everything he believed about their divorce.
