Part 2: THE SECRET ALEXANDER HID FOR TEN YEARS WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING

The sound of another shot shattered the mansion.

For ten years, Claire believed Alexander Vaughn was the most dangerous person in her life.

She had been wrong.

The man who destroyed her peace was standing in the darkness outside.

But the man protecting her was the same man she had spent a decade trying to destroy.

Alexander kept his body between hers and the broken window.

“Stay behind me.”

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After all the years of cold words, betrayal, and hatred.

He was still protecting me.

“Alexander…”

“Claire, for once in your life, listen to me.”

His voice was different.

Not the arrogant billionaire who controlled boardrooms.

Not the ruthless man who could destroy someone’s career with a single phone call.

This was the voice of a man who was terrified.

The footsteps outside became louder.

A shadow moved behind the curtains.

Alexander grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the hidden passage behind the library.

I resisted.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting you out.”

“You don’t even know if I want to be saved.”

He stopped.

For a second, the anger disappeared.

Only pain remained.

“Don’t say that.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because for ten years, I watched you hate me because I thought hatred was better than losing you.”

The words struck harder than any accusation.

“What does that even mean?”

Alexander opened the secret door.

Behind it was a narrow hallway I had never known existed.

A part of the mansion that even I, his wife, had never seen.

“You always wondered why I never divorced you.”

“Yes.”

“You thought it was because of the money.”

I stayed silent.

Because that was exactly what I believed.

Alexander looked away.

“It wasn’t.”

A loud crash came from the living room.

Someone had entered.

He continued walking.

“Ten years ago, when your brother died, you thought I was the reason.”

My heart froze.

That name.

That memory.

The secret that had chained us together.

“Don’t.”

“I need you to know the truth.”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“You deserve to.”

His voice broke slightly.

And that terrified me more than the men outside.

Because Alexander Vaughn never broke.

“Your brother didn’t die because of me.”

I stopped walking.

“What?”

“He died because he found out about the people trying to take over Vaughn Holdings.”

I stared at him.

“You told me you were responsible.”

“I told you I was responsible for failing to protect him.”

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

Ten years of hatred.

Ten years of believing I was trapped with the man who ruined my family.

And now he was telling me everything I knew was wrong.

“Why didn’t you explain?”

His eyes met mine.

“Because the people behind it threatened you.”

My breath caught.

“They said if I revealed the truth, you would be next.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I knew you hated me.”

“Yes.”

“I knew every day you looked at me like I was the monster.”

His voice lowered.

“But you were alive.”

Silence.

The words hurt because they were honest.

Then another sound came from behind us.

A phone ringing.

Alexander reached into his pocket.

His expression changed when he saw the number.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he handed me the phone.

“Your doctor.”

I frowned.

“My doctor?”

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s nervous voice came through.

“Claire, thank God. I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“What happened?”

There was a pause.

Then:

“The medical report you received wasn’t complete.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you mean?”

“The diagnosis was real, but someone altered the final pages.”

I looked at Alexander.

He was watching me carefully.

“What pages?”

“The treatment options.”

My heart stopped.

“I don’t understand.”

“Someone wanted you to believe there was no hope.”

The hallway went silent.

Even the gunshots outside seemed distant.

“Who?”

The doctor hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Then the call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Alexander’s face had changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

“You knew.”

I whispered.

His jaw tightened.

“Not everything.”

“You knew someone changed my report?”

“I suspected.”

I stepped away from him.

“You suspected and you didn’t tell me?”

“I was trying to find proof.”

“You let me believe I was dying.”

His expression collapsed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Claire, listen—”

“No.”

The anger I had carried for ten years came back.

Stronger than before.

“You watched me prepare to disappear.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

A long silence followed.

Then Alexander said something I never expected.

“I was afraid.”

I froze.

Alexander Vaughn admitting fear felt impossible.

“I was afraid that if I told you, you would leave me before I could stop it.”

I stared at him.

“You thought my death was easier than my forgiveness?”

His eyes lowered.

“No.”

“Then what?”

His voice became almost silent.

“Because I didn’t know how to live without you.”

Before I could answer, the lights suddenly returned.

And with them came a new sound.

Police sirens.

The attackers outside began running.

Alexander looked toward the exit.

“They’re leaving.”

But I wasn’t listening.

I was looking at him.

At the man I had hated.

At the man who had let me hate him.

At the man who had carried a secret alone for ten years.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One photo.

The photo showed Alexander and me from ten years ago.

The night everything began.

Below it was a message:

“You still believe Alexander saved your brother?”

My blood turned cold.

Another message arrived.

“Ask him who was driving the car that night.”

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Alexander.

And for the first time in ten years…

I wondered if the man protecting me tonight was also the man I had been running from all along.
