Part 2: THE SECRET BEHIND TOBIAS’S FIFTEEN YEARS OF SILENCE

I couldn’t move.

Not because I was afraid of Garrett anymore.

Not because of the freezing water that still clung to my clothes.

But because my entire life had suddenly become a lie.

My husband.

My marriage.

Even the accident that took my parents fifteen years ago.

Everything I believed was real had cracks beneath the surface.

I looked at Tobias.

The brother I had protected for half my life.

The brother I had watched sit silently in that wheelchair.

The brother everyone pitied.

And now he was standing in front of me.

Strong.

Calm.

Prepared.

“Explain everything.”

My voice trembled.

Tobias looked toward the river.

“Not here.”

“After everything that happened, you still want secrets?”

His expression softened.

“Rosalind, I spent fifteen years pretending to be helpless because the person who destroyed our family was still watching.”

I froze.

“Garrett?”

He nodded.

“But not only Garrett.”

The words made my stomach tighten.

“His father.”

I remembered.

Fifteen years ago.

The night our parents died.

Everyone called it an accident.

A brake failure.

A tragic mistake.

But Tobias had always been the only person who never accepted that explanation.

“I found evidence after the accident.”

He took a small waterproof case from inside his jacket.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Records.

My hands shook as I looked through them.

The first photo showed my father’s shipyard.

The second showed Garrett’s father standing beside several investors.

The third…

My breath stopped.

It was Garrett.

Much younger.

Standing with Penelope.

“Penelope knew?”

Tobias looked at me.

“She knew before you married him.”

The pain was worse than the betrayal.

Because Penelope was not just my half sister.

She was someone I had defended.

Someone I had trusted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you loved him.”

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

“You wouldn’t have believed me.”

I couldn’t deny it.

Because years ago, I would have defended Garrett.

I would have told everyone Tobias was paranoid.

I would have chosen my husband over my own brother.

And that was exactly what Garrett wanted.

Tobias sat down against the concrete pillar.

The strength in his legs slowly disappeared.

I stared.

“Wait.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“You can walk.”

A faint smile appeared.

“Sometimes.”

“Sometimes?”

He nodded.

“The accident damaged my spine.”

“But…”

“The doctors said I could recover with intensive therapy.”

My eyes widened.

“Then why pretend?”

“Because after our parents died, I discovered someone was monitoring every move our family made.”

He looked at the river.

“I realized if they thought I was useless, they would stop seeing me as a threat.”

I felt tears forming.

“You lived fifteen years trapped in that chair.”

“Yes.”

“Just to protect me?”

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That was the moment I realized something painful.

The person everyone thought was weak…

had been the strongest person in my life.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Mrs. Carter.”

I immediately recognized it.

Garrett.

My blood turned cold.

“You survived.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was a statement.

I looked at Tobias.

He immediately understood.

“Put it on speaker.”

I did.

Garrett laughed softly.

“I have to admit, I’m impressed.”

“Did you call to celebrate failing?”

Silence.

Then:

“You always were more stubborn than I expected.”

My hands tightened.

“Why?”

“Why?”

He repeated the word.

“As if you don’t know.”

“Tell me.”

A pause.

Then his voice became colder.

“Your family built something valuable.”

“The shipyard.”

“Not just the shipyard.”

I frowned.

“What else?”

“The patents.”

My heart stopped.

The technology my father developed.

The technology everyone thought disappeared after his death.

Garrett continued.

“For fifteen years, my family tried to get control legally.”

“And when that failed…”

He laughed.

“We became patient.”

I felt sick.

“You married me.”

“Yes.”

“You pretended to love me.”

“At first.”

The honesty was disgusting.

“Then what changed?”

“You made everything difficult.”

I closed my eyes.

Because to him, my loyalty was an obstacle.

My trust was just a tool.

“And Penelope?”

“She understood the plan.”

My own sister.

The person waiting on the shore.

Pregnant with my husband’s child.

Everything connected.

Then Garrett said something that made me freeze.

“Actually, Rosalind…”

“You should thank me.”

“For what?”

“Your parents died quickly.”

Silence.

Tobias moved instantly.

His face changed.

Because he understood what Garrett meant.

But I needed to hear it.

“What did you say?”

Garrett didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The implication was enough.

My hands started shaking.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years believing I had lost my parents in an accident.

And the man I married had known the truth.

Maybe even been part of it.

Then another voice appeared in the background.

A woman.

Penelope.

“Garrett, we have to go.”

He smiled.

“I have to leave.”

But before hanging up, he added:

“Enjoy your little discovery.”

“Because by tomorrow morning, the shipyard will no longer belong to you.”

The call ended.

I stood there silently.

Then Tobias placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Rosalind.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice was different.

Calmer.

Stronger.

“For fifteen years, they thought we were defeated.”

I looked toward the city lights.

“They were wrong.”

That night, we returned to my family’s old estate.

The place Garrett believed was empty.

The place where he thought there were no secrets left.

But when Tobias opened my father’s old office…

I saw something hidden behind the wall.

A safe.

One that had never appeared in any records.

Tobias looked at me.

“Your father left something for us.”

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

Rosalind.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“If you are reading this, it means the person closest to you betrayed you.”

I looked at Tobias.

Then back at the letter.

And the next line revealed something I never expected.

My father had known Garrett would come for our family.

And he had prepared a way to destroy him.
