Part 2: THE DAY ADRIAN REALIZED LILY HAD ALREADY STOPPED WAITING FOR HIM

The moment Adrian’s ring sent the alert, he was still sitting beside Claire.

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Claire was leaning against his shoulder, pretending to be fragile.

Pretending to need protection.

But Adrian wasn’t looking at her anymore.

He was staring at the screen.

Heart rate of the other person: unavailable.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Claire noticed.

“Adrian?”

He didn’t answer.

He pressed the screen.

Nothing.

He called.

No response.

Again.

Nothing.

For seven years, Lily’s heartbeat had always been connected to him.

When she was nervous.

When she was excited.

When she was scared.

He knew every change.

But now…

there was only silence.

“Maybe the ring malfunctioned.”

Claire’s voice sounded gentle.

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, he didn’t immediately comfort her.

Because a thought appeared in his mind.

A thought that he refused to accept.

Lily had given up.

He stood up.

“I’m leaving.”

Claire froze.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“But tomorrow is your wedding.”

Adrian stopped.

Tomorrow.

The word suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The wedding he had treated like an appointment.

The woman he assumed would always be waiting.

Suddenly…

he was afraid he would arrive too late.

When Adrian returned to the apartment, the lights were off.

“Lily.”

No answer.

He walked through every room.

The kitchen was clean.

The living room was empty.

The small details she always left behind were gone.

The cup she used every morning.

The books she read before sleeping.

The little decorations she carefully arranged.

Everything remained.

Except her.

Then he saw the trash can.

The ring.

His face changed.

He picked it up.

The same ring he had given her seven years ago.

The ring he thought represented their connection.

But now it was covered in dust.

Like something she had already abandoned.

His fingers tightened.

“Lily…”

For the first time in years, his voice trembled.

Then he saw the wedding dress.

Still hanging in the closet.

Beside it was a small envelope.

His name was written on it.

Adrian Cole.

He opened it.

Inside was only one page.

No accusations.

No anger.

Just a few sentences.

“Adrian.”

“I spent seven years trying to become someone you would choose.”

“I changed my dreams.”

“I changed my life.”

“I even convinced myself that being second place was enough.”

His breathing became heavier.

“But today I finally understand.”

“Love is not proven by how much pain someone can endure.”

“Sometimes leaving is the only way to remember who you were before you disappeared.”

The paper shook in his hand.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

“Thank you for the seven years.”

“Tomorrow, please don’t wait for me.”

Adrian stood completely still.

Because those words hurt more than anger.

More than hatred.

More than any accusation.

Because Lily wasn’t trying to punish him.

She was saying goodbye.

The next morning, Adrian arrived at the wedding venue.

But Lily wasn’t there.

The guests whispered.

The decorations were ready.

The flowers were arranged.

Everything was exactly as planned.

Except the bride.

Adrian checked his phone again and again.

Nothing.

Finally, he called her.

This time…

someone answered.

It was an unknown number.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice replied.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Where is Lily?”

Silence.

Then:

“Are you Adrian Cole?”

“Yes.”

“I am from the hospital.”

His heart stopped.

“What hospital?”

The woman hesitated.

“Your wife was brought here last night.”

The word wife made him freeze.

“What happened?”

“She was exhausted and collapsed.”

Adrian grabbed his coat.

“I’m coming.”

When he arrived, Lily was sitting by the window.

Alive.

Calm.

Different.

She looked thinner.

But peaceful.

Adrian stopped at the door.

For years, he had imagined this woman crying because of him.

Begging him.

Waiting for him.

But she wasn’t.

She looked like someone who had already accepted the ending.

“Lily.”

She turned.

No anger.

No surprise.

Just a quiet look.

“You’re here.”

Those three words hurt him.

Because there was no happiness in them.

Only acknowledgment.

“I was worried.”

She smiled slightly.

“About me?”

He couldn’t answer.

Because he realized something painful.

He had spent years assuming Lily needed him.

But he was the one who needed her.

“I saw the ring.”

Silence.

“I read your letter.”

She looked away.

“I see.”

“I didn’t know.”

Her expression didn’t change.

“Yes.”

“I didn’t know you felt this way.”

That sentence made her laugh softly.

Not happily.

Sadly.

“Adrian.”

She looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

“You never knew.”

“You never asked.”

He lowered his head.

Because every word was true.

“I thought you would always be there.”

“I know.”

“I thought you understood me.”

“I know.”

“I thought…”

He stopped.

Because every sentence sounded worse.

He thought.

He assumed.

He expected.

But he never chose.

Lily touched the scar on her arm.

The scars he had seen every day for seven years.

The scars he had learned to look past.

“Do you remember when I first woke up after the fire?”

Adrian’s eyes turned red.

“Yes.”

“You held my hand and told me I was still beautiful.”

“I meant it.”

“I believed you.”

A pause.

“Then why did you give the treatment to Claire?”

His face went pale.

Because there was no excuse.

No explanation that could make it right.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

Because the truth sounded cruel.

He thought Claire needed saving.

He thought Lily was strong enough.

He thought Lily would understand.

Again.

Always Lily.

Always the person expected to sacrifice.

“I was wrong.”

Lily looked at him.

“Yes.”

A single word.

But this time…

it wasn’t forgiveness.

It was acceptance.

Three months later, Lily disappeared from Adrian’s life completely.

She completed the system’s final process.

She left the world she had entered seven years earlier.

But before leaving…

she received one final message.

Mission complete.

Reward: Return to your original life.

She smiled.

Because she finally understood.

The goal was never to make Adrian love her.

The goal was to remember that she deserved love without begging for it.

Meanwhile, Adrian kept the ring.

He never removed it.

Not because he believed Lily would return.

But because it was the only thing left that connected him to the woman who once loved him more than herself.

Years later, people still talked about Adrian Cole.

The genius.

The businessman.

The man who had everything.

But those closest to him knew the truth.

The biggest loss of his life was not a company.

Not money.

Not reputation.

It was the woman who spent seven years choosing him…

until one day she finally chose herself.
