PART 2: THE DAY ADRIÁN MONTES LOST EVERYTHING HE THOUGHT HE OWNED

At 8:15 in the morning, Adrián Montes arrived at the hospital.

He expected anger.

He expected tears.

He expected Elena waiting for him with the same wounded expression she had worn for years.

But Elena was not there.

The woman who always waited was gone.

Instead, he found her sitting in the conference room of the Montes Group headquarters.

Calm.

Elegant.

Holding a folder.

The same woman he had underestimated for years.

—Elena.

She looked up.

—Good morning, Mr. Montes.

The way she said his name made him stop.

Not “Adrián.”

Not the nickname she had used since they met.

Mr. Montes.

A stranger.

—What are you doing here?

She closed the folder.

—Attending a shareholder meeting.

His expression changed.

—You don’t have a meeting today.

—Actually, I do.

She placed several documents on the table.

—As the representative of Valdés Capital Fund.

Silence filled the room.

Several executives looked at Adrián.

Confused.

Because most of them had never heard that name.

But Adrián had.

His face slowly lost color.

—No.

Elena watched him.

—Yes.

He stepped closer.

—That’s impossible.

—Is it?

She opened the first document.

—Forty-eight percent ownership.

The room became completely silent.

—Your company survived five years ago because of my family’s investment structure.

Adrián stared at the papers.

Because he remembered.

He remembered the money.

He remembered the rescue.

But he had convinced himself that it belonged to him now.

That the woman who gave him everything had nothing left.

—You hid this from me.

Elena smiled slightly.

—No.

She looked at him.

—You never asked.

That sentence hurt more than any accusation.

Because it was true.

He had never asked about her finances.

Her family.

Her past.

He only cared about the version of Elena that needed him.

—Why now?

His voice became lower.

—Why destroy everything?

Elena looked around the room.

At the executives.

At the company.

At the empire she had helped protect.

—I am not destroying anything.

She paused.

—I am removing my protection.

Those words changed the atmosphere.

Because everyone finally understood.

The company was not collapsing because Elena attacked it.

It was collapsing because the person who held it together had stepped away.

Then the door opened.

Camila entered.

She froze when she saw Elena.

And then she saw the documents.

Her face changed.

—Adrián…

He turned.

—What are you doing here?

Camila looked nervous.

—You said everything would be fine.

Elena noticed the reaction.

Everything would be fine.

Interesting.

She looked at Camila.

—What did he promise you?

The young woman looked away.

Adrián immediately interrupted.

—This has nothing to do with you.

Elena looked at him.

—Everything has to do with me now.

The room went silent.

Because for years, Elena had avoided conflict.

Today, she wasn’t avoiding anything.

—Tell me, Camila.

Her voice remained calm.

—What did my husband promise?

Camila’s lips trembled.

—He said…

She stopped.

Adrián’s expression became warning.

But it was too late.

—He said after the divorce, he would make me the public face of the company.

Everyone looked at Adrián.

The executives exchanged glances.

Elena nodded slowly.

So that was it.

Not only betrayal.

A plan.

Adrián stepped forward.

—Elena, don’t do this.

She looked at him.

—Do what?

—Humiliate me.

For a moment, Elena almost laughed.

Humiliate him.

The same man who let her discover his betrayal while removing a ring from another woman’s body.

The same man who believed she would always forgive.

—Adrián.

Her voice became softer.

—You are not afraid of humiliation.

He looked confused.

—You are afraid that people will finally know the truth.

He said nothing.

The board meeting continued.

The auditors presented the financial records.

Payments.

Luxury expenses.

Personal benefits.

Transfers connected to Camila.

Every document slowly destroyed the image Adrián had built.

The powerful CEO.

The perfect husband.

The respected businessman.

All of it started falling apart.

Not because Elena wanted revenge.

Because reality had finally arrived.

At the end of the meeting, the chairman looked at Adrián.

—Mr. Montes, the board will temporarily suspend your executive authority until the investigation is completed.

Adrián stood frozen.

The company that once belonged to him was now asking him to step aside.

He looked at Elena.

And for the first time, he didn’t see a weak woman.

He saw the person who had been standing behind him the entire time.

—You planned this.

Elena shook her head.

—No.

She picked up her bag.

—I prepared for the day I finally stopped lying to myself.

That evening, Adrián returned to their house.

But it didn’t feel like home anymore.

The photographs on the walls.

The furniture.

The memories.

Everything looked like something that belonged to another life.

Elena was packing.

He stood at the doorway.

—Are you really leaving?

She continued folding clothes.

—Yes.

—After everything we built?

She stopped.

Then looked at him.

—No, Adrián.

Her eyes were calm.

—After everything I built.

The sentence destroyed him.

Because deep down, he knew.

She had been the foundation.

And he had mistaken the foundation for the decoration.

—Do you hate me?

Elena thought about it.

Then shook her head.

—No.

He looked surprised.

—Then why?

She closed the suitcase.

—Because hating you would mean you still have power over me.

She walked past him.

At the door, she stopped.

—Happy Valentine’s Day, Adrián.

He looked at her.

Confused.

She placed the small transparent bag on the table.

Inside was the wedding ring she had removed from Camila.

—You gave this ring a promise.

Her voice was quiet.

—But you were the first person who broke it.

Then she left.

Months later, the world knew the truth.

Adrián Montes lost his position.

The company survived, but under new leadership.

Camila disappeared from the public eye.

And Elena Valdés returned to the hospital.

Not as Mrs. Montes.

Not as someone’s wife.

Just Dr. Elena Valdés.

The woman who saved lives.

Including her own.

And every Valentine’s Day after that, when people asked her if she regretted leaving Adrián, she always gave the same answer:

“No.”

“Because the hardest thing I ever removed from someone’s body was not a ring.”

“It was the illusion that I needed them to love me.”
