PART 2: THE SECRET BENEATH THE HOUSE

The wooden lid did not move.

For five years, I had imagined the moment I would finally find my daughter.

I imagined running toward her.

I imagined holding her.

I imagined hearing her voice again.

But standing there, with my hand over those carved words, I felt something different.

Fear.

Because if Lucy had really been under that house…

Then someone had known.

Someone had heard her.

Someone had allowed five years to pass.

The emergency operator was still speaking through the phone.

“Ma’am, do not open anything until officers arrive.”

But I couldn’t move away.

Not from that door.

Not from those four words.

Mom, I was here.

My fingers touched the carving.

The letters were uneven.

Small.

Made by a child’s hand.

Lucy.

She had written it herself.

She had been there.

I looked at Eric.

His face was empty now.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Broken.

“How long?” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?”

Eric stepped backward.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“You listen.”

Five years of unanswered questions came rushing out.

“Every day I woke up wondering if she was cold.”

“Every night I wondered if she was scared.”

“I searched hospitals.”

“Police stations.”

“Missing child centers.”

“And you were here.”

Melissa grabbed Eric’s arm.

“What is she talking about?”

He pulled away from her.

“I said I don’t know.”

But nobody believed him anymore.

Not even himself.

The dog continued scratching at the wooden door.

The same dog that had carried my daughter’s bracelet.

The same dog that had somehow found me after five years.

The officers arrived minutes later.

They separated everyone.

They photographed the trapdoor.

They checked the old structure beneath the house.

And then one officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Zhou…”

I immediately knew.

The way he said my name.

The way everyone became quiet.

“What?”

He took a slow breath.

“We need you to prepare yourself.”

My knees almost gave out.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No, don’t say that.”

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know how to say it.

Then another officer came out carrying something.

A small pink backpack.

Dirty.

Faded.

But I knew it.

I knew every scratch.

Every mark.

Every little flower stitched onto the front.

Lucy’s backpack.

I covered my mouth.

A sound escaped me.

Five years of pretending I was strong disappeared in one second.

I reached for it.

The officer gave it to me carefully.

Inside was a notebook.

A broken pencil.

A small toy rabbit.

And a drawing.

My hands trembled as I opened the notebook.

The first pages were drawings.

A house.

A tree.

A dog.

Then words.

Childlike handwriting.

“Mom will find me.”

Another page.

“Doggy says be quiet.”

Another.

“Mom is looking.”

My vision blurred.

Because my daughter had never stopped believing I would come.

Not once.

I turned another page.

And froze.

The handwriting was different.

Not Lucy’s.

An adult’s.

“I told you nobody would believe you.”

My heart stopped.

The officer looked at the page.

Then looked toward Eric.

The room became silent.

Because suddenly we understood.

This wasn’t an accident.

This wasn’t a child hiding.

Someone had created that place.

Someone had kept Lucy there.

And someone had written those words to make sure she lost hope.

I turned toward Eric.

For five years, I had asked myself the same question.

Why?

Why would a father abandon his own daughter?

Why would he leave me searching alone?

Why would he move on like nothing happened?

Now I finally had the answer.

But it was worse than anything I imagined.

Eric wasn’t just hiding a secret.

He was protecting someone.

The officer took another document from beneath the floor.

An old envelope.

The name written on it made Eric completely lose control.

“Don’t open that.”

Everyone looked at him.

The officer held the envelope tightly.

“Why?”

Eric said nothing.

Because inside that envelope was the truth.

The truth about the night Lucy disappeared.

The truth about why Eric divorced me.

And the truth about the person who had helped him keep my daughter hidden for five years.
