PART 2: THE FIVE DAYS BEFORE I LEFT FOREVER

The first thing I did after signing the transfer papers was go home and pack a suitcase.
Not because I was leaving immediately.
Not because I was afraid of them finding out.
But because I needed to prove to myself that I still had control over my own life.

For seven years, everyone had made decisions around me.
Nathan decided what our marriage was.
Daniel decided what I could endure.
Clara decided when she needed me.
And I had quietly accepted every role they gave me.

The loyal wife.
The responsible sister.
The woman who always understood.

But nobody had ever asked what Sophie wanted.

That night, Nathan came home close to midnight.

The sound of the front door opening used to make my heart beat faster.
I used to wait for him.
I used to prepare dinner even when he said he wasn’t hungry.
I used to believe that every late night was because he was tired from work.

Now I simply sat on the sofa, watching the suitcase beside me.

Nathan walked in and smiled when he saw me.

—You are still awake?

I looked at him.

The man in front of me had shared my bed for seven years.
He had held my hand when I was sick.
He had told me I was the only person he wanted beside him forever.

And yet, he had never been my husband.

—How is Clara? —I asked.

His expression softened immediately.

—She is better. The doctor said she needs rest. Daniel stayed with her until late.

I nodded.

He came closer and touched my forehead.

—You seem strange today.

I almost laughed.

Strange.

That was the only word he could find.

Not distant.
Not hurt.
Not broken.

Strange.

Because to him, my pain was something unusual, not something he had caused.

—I am just tired.

He looked at me for a few seconds.

Then he hugged me.

A year ago, that hug would have made me feel safe.

That night, it felt like standing beside a stranger wearing my husband’s face.

—I know things have been stressful since Clara came back, he whispered. But you know how much she has suffered.

There it was again.

Clara.

Always Clara.

I closed my eyes.

—Nathan, if someone you loved betrayed you, what would you do?

He froze slightly.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

—I don’t know. Why are you asking something like that?

Because I wanted to know.

I wanted to hear him lie.

I wanted to understand how easily someone could destroy another person’s life while still sleeping peacefully beside them.

—Nothing. Just a question.

He kissed my hair.

—You think too much, Sophie.

Those words followed me all night.

You think too much.

No.

I had spent years thinking too little.

The next morning, I went to my office earlier than usual.

My boss was surprised when he saw me.

—You really came.

I smiled.

—I said I would.

He handed me the documents.

—Denmark is not a vacation. The weather is difficult. The project is demanding. You will be away from your family for a long time.

Family.

That word used to mean everything to me.

Now it felt like a place where I had been the only person paying the price.

—I understand.

He studied my face.

—Is everything okay?

I looked down at the transfer form.

For a moment, I wanted to tell him everything.

That my marriage was fake.
That my brother had chosen someone else over me.
That the people I trusted most had built a future behind my back.

But I didn’t.

Because for the first time in my life, I didn’t want anyone’s sympathy.

I wanted my freedom.

—Everything is finally clear.

I signed.

That afternoon, I went back to the house.

I opened every drawer.

Every closet.

Every place where memories had been stored.

The wedding album was still there.

I opened it slowly.

There were pictures of Nathan smiling.
Pictures of me smiling.
Pictures of two people everyone believed were in love.

But now I saw something different.

I saw a woman desperately trying to believe she was chosen.

I closed the album and placed it inside a box.

Not because I wanted to keep it.

Because I wanted to remember exactly what I survived.

At six in the evening, Daniel called.

I watched his name appear on my phone.

For years, I answered immediately.

This time, I waited.

Then I picked up.

—Sophie, where are you?

—At home.

His voice sounded relieved.

—Good. I need to talk to you about Clara.

I smiled faintly.

Of course.

Even now.

—What about her?

—Her condition is sensitive. She needs support. I know this is difficult for you, but I hope you can understand.

I stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

—You have always been the strongest one. That is why everyone depends on you.

A strange calm came over me.

Because suddenly I understood.

Being called strong had never been a compliment.

It was permission for people to hurt me.

—Daniel.

—Yes?

—Did you know the marriage certificate was fake?

The silence on the other end was immediate.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Silence.

The kind of silence that answered everything.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

—You knew.

His breathing changed.

—Sophie, listen to me.

—How long?

—It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

—How long did you know my marriage didn’t exist?

He didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

I ended the call.

For the first time in twenty years, I didn’t wait for my brother to explain himself.

I didn’t give him the chance to make me understand.

I didn’t allow him to convince me that someone else’s happiness mattered more.

Five days passed quickly.

I finished my work.
Transferred my responsibilities.
Packed my belongings.

Nathan noticed.

At first, he thought I was preparing for a business trip.

Then he saw the documents on the table.

—Denmark?

I looked at him.

—Yes.

His face changed.

—For how long?

—Eighteen months.

He stared at me.

—You accepted it?

—I did.

—Without discussing it with me?

I almost smiled.

Discuss it with him?

The man who created a fake marriage without telling me wanted to discuss my future.

—You were busy.

His expression became uncomfortable.

—Sophie, this isn’t the right time to make emotional decisions.

Emotional.

Another word people used when they didn’t want to face the truth.

—I am not making an emotional decision, Nathan.

I picked up my passport.

—I am making the first decision that belongs only to me.

He stepped closer.

—Are you angry because of Clara?

I looked directly at him.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Because he realized something.

I wasn’t fighting for him anymore.

—I am not angry because of Clara.

I paused.

—I am leaving because I finally understand that I was the only person in this marriage.

The room became silent.

Nathan opened his mouth.

But no words came.

The next morning, before sunrise, I left the house.

The house that was legally mine.
The house he called ours.
The place where I had spent seven years believing I belonged.

I left the key on the table.

Not because I was giving it away.

Because I no longer needed to prove ownership of something that had never contained love.

At the airport, my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

“Sophie, please don’t leave like this. We need to talk.”

Then another message arrived.

From Nathan.

“Please wait. There is something you don’t know.”

I stared at the screen.

For years, I had waited for him to tell me the truth.

Now that I was leaving, suddenly there was something I didn’t know.

I turned off my phone.

The plane began boarding.

As I walked toward the gate, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Peace.

But I didn’t know that while I was flying away from the life they had stolen from me, a secret buried for seven years was about to surface.

And this time, the truth would not protect Nathan or Clara.

It would destroy the entire family that had chosen to sacrifice me.
