Part 2: THE MARRIAGE THEY NEVER EXPECTED

The first thing I did after Ethan answered my call was cry.

Not because I was sad.

Not because I regretted leaving Adrian.

I cried because after an entire year of fighting for someone who didn’t choose me, I finally heard the voice of someone who had never stopped choosing me.

Ethan didn’t ask what happened.

He didn’t demand explanations.

He simply said:

—Where are you?

I gave him the address.

Twenty minutes later, his car stopped in front of me.

I was still sitting on the bench outside the civil registry, holding the same documents that had once represented my dream with Adrian.

But now they represented something else.

The moment I finally woke up.

Ethan stepped out of the car.

He looked exactly the same as I remembered.

Calm.
Reliable.
Steady.

The complete opposite of the chaos I had lived through.

He walked toward me and stopped.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he noticed my expression.

—He hurt you.

I looked down.

—He never loved me the way I loved him.

Ethan was silent.

Then he took off his coat and placed it over my shoulders.

A small gesture.

But after everything I had experienced, it felt like someone finally saw that I was cold.

—Sophia.

I looked at him.

—Don’t marry me because you are trying to escape him.

My eyes filled with tears.

Because even then, Ethan was thinking about my feelings before his own.

—I know.

I whispered.

—I’m not choosing you because I lost Adrian.

I looked directly at him.

—I’m choosing you because I finally realized you were the person who was always there.

That night, Ethan took me to his home.

Not as a replacement.

Not as someone broken.

As someone who deserved a place where she could breathe.

The next morning, he helped me contact a lawyer.

The fake marriage with Victor Cole had to be investigated.

And when the documents were examined, the truth became even worse.

Adrian hadn’t simply changed my marital status.

He had used my personal information without permission.

He had manipulated official procedures.

He had convinced Victor to participate.

All because he believed I would never discover the truth.

Because he believed my love was stronger than my anger.

He was wrong.

Three days later, Adrian finally called.

I stared at his name on my phone.

A year ago, that name could make my heart race.

Now it meant nothing.

I answered.

—Sophia.

His voice sounded tired.

—Where are you?

I remained silent.

Then he asked:

—Why did you add Ethan Cross to the crew group?

I almost laughed.

That was his concern.

Not the fake marriage.

Not the documents.

Not the pain.

Only his embarrassment.

—Because everyone needed to know the truth.

—What truth?

I looked at Ethan sitting across the room.

He was reading documents quietly.

He didn’t interrupt.

He trusted me.

—That I was never yours to keep waiting.

There was silence on the other end.

Then Adrian lowered his voice.

—Sophia, I can explain everything.

I closed my eyes.

How many times had I heard that sentence?

Every betrayal had come with an explanation.

Every abandonment had come with a reason.

But reasons didn’t erase pain.

—Adrian, do you remember the day we were supposed to get married?

He didn’t answer.

—You left me there.

Silence.

—Do you remember every time I waited for you?

Another silence.

—Do you remember telling Ryan that I loved you too much to leave?

His breathing changed.

He knew.

—You heard that?

—Yes.

For the first time, Adrian had nothing to say.

Because the thing he believed made him powerful was the same thing that destroyed him.

He believed my love had no limit.

He was wrong.

A week later, the aviation authority investigation began.

Adrian’s actions became impossible to hide.

The crew members who had congratulated him in the group chat now avoided his calls.

The same people who once laughed with him now realized they had been celebrating a lie.

And Ella Hayes…

She disappeared.

Not because she was heartbroken.

Because the evidence revealed she had planned far more than anyone expected.

The emotional threats.
The staged emergencies.
The manipulation.

Everything had been carefully designed to keep Adrian close.

And Adrian had allowed it.

That was the hardest truth for him to accept.

Nobody forced him to abandon me.

He chose to.

Months later, I stood beside Ethan at the airport.

Not as someone trying to prove anything.

Not as someone trying to make Adrian jealous.

Simply as myself.

Our daughter was in my arms.

The same baby whose photo had caused the entire crew group to explode.

The photo that accidentally exposed a truth everyone needed to see.

Ethan smiled as he looked at her.

—She has your eyes.

I smiled.

—And your patience.

He laughed softly.

For the first time in years, my life felt peaceful.

Then my phone received a message.

From Adrian.

I opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

“I finally understand what I lost.”

I looked at the screen for a few seconds.

Then I locked my phone.

Because some people only understand the value of something after they destroy it.

I held my daughter’s hand.

I looked at Ethan.

And I walked forward.

Not toward a new life.

Because I had already found it.

I was simply continuing the one I finally chose for myself.
