Part 2: THE TRUTH HIDDEN BEHIND THE CHOICE

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The emergency room that had been filled with noise suddenly became completely silent.

Gabriel stood near the door.

His face had lost all color.

Not because of the injury.

Not because of the blood.

But because of the sentence he had just heard.

The son was not Rachel’s boyfriend’s.

It was his.

Five years.

Five years believing the worst night of his life was only about losing Elena’s hand.

Five years blaming himself for failing to protect his wife.

But he had never imagined there was another truth buried beneath that night.

His eyes slowly moved toward me.

—Elena…

My name left his mouth like a confession.

I didn’t look at him.

I continued checking the broken prosthesis.

The same calm I had developed after years in the emergency room.

Because when you spend enough time saving other people’s lives, you learn one thing.

Pain does not disappear.

You simply learn how to carry it.

Gabriel took a step forward.

—What did you say?

I finally looked at him.

—You heard me.

His breathing became heavier.

—Rachel…

I interrupted him.

—Rachel Lane was my patient.

The room became even quieter.

—She came to me three months before the kidnapping.

Gabriel’s expression changed.

He remembered.

Of course he remembered.

Rachel had always been the person he wanted to protect.

The young officer who admired him.

The person he called “family.”

But what he never knew was that Rachel had come to the hospital for a medical examination.

And I was the doctor who discovered the truth.

She was pregnant.

With his child.

I had looked at her medical file that day.

Then I looked at her face.

She was young.

Confused.

Terrified.

She begged me not to tell anyone.

Especially Gabriel.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what his reaction would be.

I respected patient confidentiality.

I never told Gabriel.

Not even when my own life was in danger.

Not even when he chose her over me.

But after the kidnapping…

After losing my hand…

After watching him hold her while I lay bleeding on the floor…

Something inside me died.

Not because he chose Rachel.

Because he looked at me like I was someone he could sacrifice.

Gabriel walked closer.

His voice trembled.

—Why didn’t you tell me?

I smiled faintly.

A painful smile.

—Would it have changed anything?

He froze.

Because we both knew the answer.

That night, he had already made his choice.

Before knowing about the child.

Before knowing about my pregnancy.

He had looked at me.

His wife.

The woman who stood beside him through every dangerous mission.

And he had chosen someone else.

A doctor approached Gabriel.

—Captain Reed, your wound needs attention.

He didn’t move.

His eyes remained on me.

—Elena, I need you to explain.

I looked at him.

—No.

His face changed.

—No?

—You don’t need an explanation.

I picked up the damaged prosthetic hand.

—You already made your decision five years ago.

His fingers tightened.

—It was a hostage situation.

—Yes.

I nodded.

—And you chose.

That single word destroyed every excuse.

Because it was true.

There had been danger.

There had been fear.

There had been impossible circumstances.

But in the end, he chose.

A nurse helped me move toward the treatment room.

Gabriel followed.

—Wait.

I stopped.

—What?

His voice became lower.

—Did you lose the baby too?

For the first time, my expression changed.

Only slightly.

But he noticed.

Because he still knew me.

Or maybe he was finally trying to know me.

I looked away.

—Yes.

His face collapsed.

The man who faced criminals without fear suddenly looked broken.

—Elena…

—After the surgery, the doctors told me my body had suffered too much trauma.

I spoke calmly.

—The baby didn’t survive.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

A painful silence followed.

Then he whispered:

—Why didn’t you tell me?

I looked at him.

—Because when I woke up, you weren’t asking if I was alive.

His eyes opened.

—You were asking if Rachel was okay.

No one spoke.

Because that was the truth he could never escape.

Five years later, the consequences had finally reached him.

The woman he thought he lost because of an accident was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Strong.

But no longer waiting.

That evening, after my prosthesis was repaired temporarily, I left the hospital.

I thought I was finished with Gabriel Reed.

But the next morning, something unexpected happened.

A sealed envelope arrived at my office.

There was no sender.

Inside was a DNA report.

My hands stopped moving when I saw the name.

Gabriel Reed.

Rachel Lane.

The results confirmed what I already knew.

The child was his.

But there was another document attached.

A legal statement.

Signed five years ago.

By Rachel.

My eyes moved across the page.

And the final sentence made my entire body freeze.

“Gabriel Reed must never know the child was not lost.”

I read it again.

Then again.

Because the truth was impossible.

The child survived.

And for five years…

Someone had been hiding Gabriel’s son from him.

But the question was no longer why Rachel lied.

The question was…

Why did she send this to me now?
