The taxi stopped in front of my apartment.
I didn’t move immediately.
For the entire journey, Elena hadn’t said another word.
She didn’t comfort me.
She didn’t tell me that Andrés was innocent.
She didn’t tell me that everything would be fine.
And strangely…
That made me trust her more.
Because if she wanted to protect her son blindly, she would have done it at the mall.
She would have created an excuse.
She would have pulled him away.
But she didn’t.
She let me see.
She let me understand.
When I finally opened the taxi door, Elena called my name.
—Isabel.
I turned around.
Her expression was serious.
—Do not confront him tonight.
I froze.
—What?
—Don’t ask questions.
—Don’t cry.
—Don’t show him that you know.
I stared at her.
—Why?
She looked at me quietly.
—Because a person who thinks they are hiding something will reveal much more than a person who knows they have been discovered.
Those words stayed in my mind.
That night, Andrés arrived home at exactly eight o’clock.
Just like Elena predicted.
He opened the door with flowers in his hand.
The same flowers he bought whenever he wanted to apologize.
—Isabel.
He smiled.
—Why didn’t you answer my messages?
I looked at him.
Messages.
Of course.
After seeing him with another woman, he still acted normal.
I took the flowers.
—My phone was silent.
He walked closer and kissed my forehead.
The same place he kissed every morning.
But now it felt unfamiliar.
—Mom said something happened at the mall.
My heart tightened.
So he knew.
—What did she say?
He paused.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
—She said she saw me talking to an old friend.
Old friend.
A simple phrase.
A carefully chosen phrase.
I smiled.
—Laura Medina?
His hand stopped.
Very briefly.
But enough.
—You know her?
I put the flowers on the table.
—Your mother told me.
Andrés relaxed slightly.
—Ah.
He laughed.
—Laura is just an old classmate.
I looked at him.
—Is that all?
His smile became forced.
—Of course.
I nodded.
I didn’t argue.
I didn’t accuse him.
Because Elena was right.
Not yet.
Later that night, while Andrés was showering, my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Ask your husband why he never told you about the apartment on River Street.”
My fingers froze.
Apartment?
I looked toward the bathroom door.
The sound of water continued.
My husband.
The man who shared every password with me.
The man who told me we had no secrets.
Had another apartment?
I took a screenshot.
Then I sent it to Elena.
Only three seconds later, she answered.
“Do not reply.”
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
“I have proof.”
Attached was a photo.
Andrés entering a building.
Holding Laura’s hand.
My breathing became difficult.

The photo wasn’t from today.
It was from two months ago.
Two months.
While I was preparing his birthday dinner.
While I was choosing his gift.
While I believed we were happy.
The bathroom door opened.
I quickly locked my phone.
Andrés came out drying his hair.
—Who was texting?
I smiled.
—A work message.
He nodded.
Then he sat beside me.
—Isabel.
—Hmm?
—Do you believe me?
The question surprised me.
I looked at him.
—Why are you asking?
He looked down.
—Nothing.
But I understood.
He wasn’t asking because he wanted reassurance.
He was checking.
Checking if I knew.
Checking if I suspected.
I placed my hand over his.
—Of course I believe you.
The words almost made me sick.
Because five years of marriage had taught me to trust him.
But one afternoon at a mall had taught me something else.
Trust was not the same as blindness.
The next morning, Elena invited me to breakfast.
When I arrived, she already had a folder on the table.
I looked at it.
—What is this?
She pushed it toward me.
—Everything I found.
My heart stopped.
—You investigated your own son?
Elena looked away.
—I’m his mother.
She paused.
—But I’m also a woman.
I opened the folder.
Bank records.
Hotel reservations.
Apartment documents.
Photos.
Dates.
The evidence was organized perfectly.
Then I saw the last page.
A divorce agreement draft.
My name was not on it.
Laura’s name was.
Andrés had prepared it three months earlier.
But he hadn’t signed it.
I looked at Elena.
—Why are you showing me this?
Her eyes became sad.
—Because I raised a son who learned how to avoid responsibility.
She touched the folder.
—But I refuse to watch him destroy a woman who loved him.
My eyes filled with tears.
Not because of Andrés.
Because suddenly I realized something.
The person who should have protected my marriage…
Was the person who had prepared me for its ending.
That evening, Andrés came home earlier than usual.
He looked happy.
Too happy.
—Isabel.
I turned.
—Yes?
He walked toward me.
—I have something to tell you.
My heart became cold.
Because I already knew.
The truth was finally coming.
But before he could speak, Elena entered through the door behind him.
And she placed a document on the table.
Andrés’ face changed immediately.
—Mom?
She looked at him calmly.
—Sit down, Andrés.
For the first time in his life…
Her son looked afraid.
Because he finally understood.
This time, he was not facing an angry wife.
He was facing the woman who raised him.
And she already knew everything.
