PART 2: The Seat She Took, The Family She Lost

The moment my father said Ethan no longer had a place at the table, the entire room changed.

For three years, I had been the person who explained his mistakes.

I told my parents that Ethan was under pressure.

I told my friends that Julia was only a friend.

I told myself that love required patience.

But that night, sitting beside my mother while Ethan stood alone in front of my family, I finally understood something I had refused to accept.

Ethan didn’t lose his place because of a chair.

He lost it because, after three years of knowing me, he still believed I would always move aside for someone else.

The dinner continued, but the atmosphere was completely different.

A waiter quietly brought another chair for Julia.

My father personally served her food and asked about her studies.

No one was rude to her.

No one blamed her for arriving.

But no one looked at her the way Ethan expected.

Because everyone in that room understood the difference between welcoming someone and allowing someone to replace another person.

Ethan remained standing for several seconds.

I could see the disbelief on his face.

He had always believed my family would forgive him because I loved him.

He believed my silence meant permission.

He believed my patience meant weakness.

Finally, he looked at me.

—Olivia, are you really going to let your father do this because of a misunderstanding?

A misunderstanding.

That was the word he chose.

I almost laughed.

A misunderstanding was forgetting an appointment.

A misunderstanding was arriving late.

A misunderstanding was bringing the wrong gift.

But giving another woman my seat at the dinner where you were supposed to be welcomed into my family?

That was a choice.

I looked at him calmly.

—Ethan, you made your choice before my father ever spoke.

His expression hardened.

—You know Julia has nobody.

I nodded.

—Yes. I know.

He seemed surprised that I agreed.

—Then why are you acting like this?

I lowered my eyes to the red handkerchief my mother had prepared.

My name was still written on the card.

Olivia Wen.

Three words.

A place that belonged to me.

—Because having no family doesn’t mean someone else deserves to lose theirs.

The room became quiet again.

Julia looked down.

For the first time that night, her expression changed.

The helplessness disappeared for a moment.

There was something else behind her eyes.

Something I couldn’t identify.

But before I could think about it, Ethan spoke again.

—You are making this bigger than it is.

My father slowly put down his glass.

—No.

His voice was calm.

But everyone stopped moving.

—You are making it smaller than it is.

Ethan looked at him.

My father continued.

—A person’s character is not shown when everything goes well.

—It is shown when they believe nobody will punish them for hurting someone else.

Those words hit harder than any accusation.

Because they were true.

Ethan had not been cruel because he hated me.

He had been cruel because he thought I would never leave.

After dinner, I went upstairs to the balcony.

The garden lights below reflected against the glass doors.

This house had witnessed every important moment of my life.

My first steps.

My graduation.

My mother’s tears when I told her I was getting engaged.

And now, it witnessed the end of the future I thought I wanted.

A few minutes later, Ethan came after me.

—Olivia.

I didn’t turn around.

—What?

His voice softened.

The same voice he used whenever he wanted me to forgive him.

—I know I handled tonight badly.

I stayed silent.

—But you know me. I was only trying to help Julia.

I looked at the city lights in front of me.

—No.

He stopped.

—What?

—I know you wanted to help Julia.

I finally faced him.

—What I don’t understand is why helping her always requires hurting me.

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

For years, Julia had always appeared at the exact moments Ethan needed someone to rescue.

When she had trouble with research, Ethan helped.

When she had nowhere to go during holidays, Ethan invited her.

When she was upset, Ethan disappeared for hours to comfort her.

Every time I questioned it, he told me the same thing.

“She is like a little sister.”

But siblings do not make someone hide conversations.

Siblings do not create jealousy between couples.

Siblings do not become the person someone constantly chooses over their future wife.

I had ignored too many signs because I wanted to believe the best about him.

Ethan stepped closer.

—Are you breaking up with me because of this?

I looked at him.

Three years ago, that question would have destroyed me.

Tonight, it only made me tired.

—I think I broke up with you a long time ago.

His face changed.

—What does that mean?

—It means every time you asked me to understand, I did.

—Every time you asked me to wait, I waited.

—Every time you asked me to sacrifice something, I sacrificed.

I paused.

—But you never once asked yourself what you were sacrificing.

Ethan became silent.

Then his phone rang.

The name on the screen appeared.

Julia.

He immediately rejected the call.

That small action should have comforted me.

Instead, it made me realize how much had changed.

Because once, I would have felt relieved.

Now, I only felt empty.

The next morning, Ethan came to my house again.

But this time, he wasn’t alone.

Julia was with him.

My mother opened the door.

Neither of them entered.

Julia held a folder in her hands.

—Mrs. Wen, I came to apologize.

My mother looked at her.

—For what?

Julia lowered her head.

—For causing trouble between Olivia and Ethan.

I watched her carefully.

Her voice was gentle.

Her expression was perfect.

But something felt different.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

My eyes narrowed.

Because the first page had Ethan’s research project information.

The same project my father’s company was considering supporting.

Julia spoke softly.

—I think there is something you should know.

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

—Julia.

She ignored him.

—Ethan never told Olivia the complete truth about why he wanted this cooperation.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Ethan.

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

My father came downstairs after hearing the voices.

He took the documents from Julia’s hand.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

—Ethan.

My father looked up.

—Explain this.

Ethan opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

Because the truth was finally standing in front of everyone.

The engagement dinner had never only been about a chair.

The chair was just the moment when everything hidden finally fell apart.

And what my family discovered next would prove that the man who wanted to enter our family had never been protecting my future.

He had been protecting his own.
