PART 2: THE TRANSLATOR WHO MADE THE CEO STOP THE CONTRACT

The email from Alessandro Romano only contained one sentence.

“Come back to the meeting room. I want to hear the truth from you, Emma.”

I stared at the screen for several seconds.

Five minutes earlier, I had been fired in front of the most important client my company had ever worked with.

Now the CEO of that same client wanted to talk to me.

I should have felt nervous.

I should have felt afraid.

But strangely, I felt calm.

Because for the first time in years, I had nothing left to lose.

When I entered the video conference again, Alessandro Romano was already waiting.

Behind him were the same executives from yesterday.

The difference was that today, nobody was smiling.

Mr. Romano looked directly at me.

—Miss Lin.

I nodded.

—Signor Romano.

He was silent for a moment.

Then he asked:

—Is what happened yesterday true?

I knew exactly what he meant.

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I understood the importance of that moment.

A careless sentence could become an emotional complaint.

But I was not there to complain.

I was there to tell the truth.

—Yes.

My voice was steady.

—During the negotiation of a project worth hundreds of millions, my company terminated my position while I was providing interpretation services for your team.

The Italian executives exchanged looks.

One of them frowned.

—And they accused you of violating company regulations?

I nodded.

—After I left the meeting, they tried to make me sign a document accusing me of leaking confidential information.

Alessandro’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Disappointment.

At that moment, another window appeared.

Mr. Brooks.

My former boss.

His face was full of forced confidence.

—Mr. Romano, I believe there has been a misunderstanding.

Alessandro looked at him.

—A misunderstanding?

Brooks laughed awkwardly.

—Emma was emotional after the dismissal. She exaggerated the situation.

I almost smiled.

The same man who didn’t know how to apologize was now trying to explain himself to an international CEO.

Alessandro leaned forward.

—Mr. Brooks.

The room became silent.

—Do you know why we selected your company?

Brooks immediately answered.

—Because of our experience and reputation.

—Wrong.

Brooks froze.

Alessandro continued.

—We selected your company because Emma Lin was leading the communication.

Nobody spoke.

—Your company had many employees.

—But only one person could make a complicated negotiation between two cultures work perfectly.

His eyes moved toward me.

—Her.

For years, I had thought my work was invisible.

I solved problems before they appeared.

I corrected misunderstandings before they became conflicts.

I stayed late preparing documents nobody noticed.

Because good translators were often forgotten.

When everything went smoothly, people thought the meeting was easy.

They never saw the person making it possible.

Until that day.

Brooks’ expression changed.

—Mr. Romano, surely you are not considering ending our cooperation because of one employee.

Alessandro smiled slightly.

A cold smile.

—One employee?

He looked at his documents.

—The person who built the communication framework for this entire project?

Silence.

—The person who spent eight months preparing terminology databases, cultural notes and negotiation strategies?

Brooks couldn’t answer.

Because he knew.

They all knew.

They didn’t fire an ordinary employee.

They removed the person holding the project together.

Then another person entered the meeting.

Sophia Brooks.

Her face was pale.

Apparently, she had just realized something.

—Uncle…

Brooks looked at her.

—Why are you here?

Sophia hesitated.

Alessandro noticed her.

—Ah.

His voice became colder.

—The replacement.

Sophia forced a smile.

—I will be responsible for the project from now on.

Alessandro looked at her.

Then he asked in Italian:

—Can you explain the revised contract terms?

Sophia froze.

She understood some words.

But not enough.

She looked toward Brooks.

Nobody helped her.

After a few uncomfortable seconds, Alessandro switched back to English.

—This is exactly the problem.

Sophia’s face turned red.

The next morning, news spread throughout the industry.

The Italian luxury brand suspended cooperation with my former company.

The official reason was simple:

“Strategic restructuring.”

But everyone inside the industry understood.

The project had followed the person who actually built it.

Me.

Three days later, Karen from Human Resources called me.

Her voice was completely different from before.

—Emma, can we talk?

I sat in my new office.

Yes.

New office.

Because Alessandro had offered me a position before I even asked.

Not as an interpreter.

As the director of international communication.

I looked outside the window.

—What do you want?

Karen hesitated.

—The company wants to clarify some things.

I almost laughed.

The same company that decided the truth belonged to whoever had more power.

Now wanted clarification.

—There is nothing to clarify.

—Emma…

I interrupted her.

—Karen, remember what you told me?

Silence.

“The truth is not up to you to decide.”

Her breathing stopped.

I continued:

—You were right about one thing.

—The truth is decided.

A pause.

—But not by the company.

A month later, I returned to my old office building.

Not to ask for my job back.

Not to prove anything.

I came because Alessandro’s company was officially announcing the new partnership.

The same project they thought they could take from me.

Employees watched me walk through the lobby.

Some lowered their heads.

Others whispered my name.

But I didn’t care anymore.

Because I finally understood something.

A company can remove your position.

A boss can erase your name from a schedule.

A colleague can steal your chair.

But they cannot take away the ability that made you valuable in the first place.

Before the event began, Alessandro approached me.

—Are you nervous?

I smiled.

—No.

He raised an eyebrow.

—Not even a little?

I looked at the stage.

At the people waiting.

At the future I almost lost because someone decided I was replaceable.

—No.

I answered.

—Because yesterday I was fired.

A small smile appeared on my face.

—Today, they have to watch me succeed without them.

Alessandro laughed softly.

—That is a very Italian way of revenge.

I shook my head.

—No.

I looked ahead.

—It’s not revenge.

—It’s just moving forward.

And for the first time in a long time…

I was no longer translating someone else’s words.

I was finally writing my own story.
