PART 2: THE FLIGHT THAT LEFT HIM BEHIND

The letter fell to the floor.

Adrian didn’t move.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the words printed on the paper as if his eyes refused to accept what they were seeing.

Captain Claire Bennett. Official transfer approved. Route T028 Commander. Effective immediately.

His fingers tightened around the document.

—No.

The word escaped his mouth quietly.

Director Collins looked at him calmly.

—Captain Miller, this decision was made after a long evaluation process.

Adrian looked up.

—She didn’t tell me.

There was something strange in his voice.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Fear.

Because for the first time in five years, he realized something terrifying.

Claire had made a decision without him.

—She submitted the request three days ago.

Three days.

The exact same day he had posted that photo with Sabrina.

The same day he wrote those words.

“After going through so many paths, you end up understanding who was really the best.”

At that moment, he had thought Claire would see it.

He thought she would get angry.

He thought she would come to him.

Like always.

Every argument.

Every misunderstanding.

Every time Sabrina appeared.

Claire was always the one who waited.

The one who asked questions.

The one who tried to repair everything.

But this time…

She had simply walked away.

The flight preparation continued around him.

The crew moved quickly.

The passengers boarded.

The announcements played.

But Adrian remained standing in the cockpit.

Looking at the empty seat beside him.

That seat had belonged to Claire for five years.

Five years of storms.

Five years of emergency landings.

Five years of silent communication where they could understand each other with just one look.

He remembered the first time they flew together.

He had been nervous.

Not because of the aircraft.

Not because of the responsibility.

Because Claire was sitting beside him.

After landing, she had smiled.

—Captain Miller, your hands were shaking.

He had laughed.

—You noticed?

—Of course.

—Then why didn’t you say anything?

Claire had looked out at the sky.

—Because I knew you would become the best pilot here.

That was Claire.

She always believed in him before anyone else did.

And he had slowly become someone who took that belief for granted.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Sabrina.

“Did Claire really leave the route?”

Adrian stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

“I didn’t expect her to actually do it.”

His expression changed.

He typed:

What do you mean?

The response came quickly.

“Nothing. I just thought she would never abandon you.”

Abandon.

That word bothered him.

Because suddenly he realized something.

Claire had not abandoned him.

She had stopped waiting for him.

There was a difference.

That evening, Adrian went home.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

He opened the door expecting to hear Claire’s voice.

Nothing.

The kitchen was clean.

The flowers she always placed near the window were gone.

The small notes she used to leave beside his coffee machine were gone.

Even the photograph from their first flight had disappeared.

Only a lighter-colored rectangle remained on the wall where it had been.

A memory of something that used to exist.

Adrian walked into the bedroom.

Half of the closet was empty.

Claire’s side.

Gone.

On the table was a small envelope.

His name was written on it.

He opened it immediately.

Inside was only one page.

Adrian,

I don’t hate you.

That would mean I still expect something from you.

He stopped reading for a moment.

His chest tightened.

For five years, I stood beside you because I believed we were flying toward the same destination.

But somewhere along the way, I became the only person still holding the controls.

I don’t know when I stopped being your partner and became someone you assumed would always be there.

Maybe it was when you started bringing other people’s memories into our home.

Maybe it was when you realized I would forgive anything.

Maybe it was when you forgot that the person sitting beside you in the cockpit was also the person waiting for you after every flight.

His fingers trembled slightly.

I accepted Route T028 because I need to remember who I am without you.

Not because I stopped loving you.

But because loving you was slowly making me disappear.

At the bottom of the page, there was one final sentence.

“I hope one day, when you look beside you and see an empty seat, you understand that someone sat there for years hoping you would finally notice.”

Adrian lowered the paper.

For the first time in a long time…

He cried.

Two weeks later, Claire officially became the youngest captain assigned to Route T028.

The news spread throughout the company.

Everyone congratulated her.

Everyone except Adrian.

Because he had been avoiding her.

Not because he hated her.

Because he didn’t know how to face the woman who had finally chosen herself.

Then one morning, during a company meeting, Claire walked into the room.

She wore the captain’s uniform.

Confident.

Calm.

Different.

Adrian looked at her.

And for a second, he saw the old Claire.

The woman who smiled at him before every flight.

But then he realized something.

The old Claire was gone.

The woman standing in front of him no longer needed him to see her value.

She already knew it.

After the meeting ended, Adrian finally approached her.

—Claire.

She stopped.

—Captain Miller.

The formal title hurt.

More than he expected.

—Can we talk?

She looked at him.

—About what?

He opened his mouth.

For once, he had no perfect words.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Only regret.

—I was wrong.

Claire remained silent.

—I thought you would always be there.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

—That’s the problem, Adrian.

He looked at her.

—You loved having me there.

She paused.

—But you forgot to love me while I was there.

Those words hit harder than any argument.

Because they were true.

Months later, Adrian and Claire flew different routes.

Opposite directions.

Different skies.

Different lives.

Sometimes they crossed paths at airports.

Sometimes they exchanged polite greetings.

Sometimes Adrian wanted to ask her to come back.

But every time he saw her standing confidently, he stopped.

Because loving someone did not mean asking them to return to the place where they had been hurt.

One year later, Adrian saw Claire’s name on the company’s list of international aviation awards.

Captain Claire Bennett — Outstanding Leadership Award.

He smiled sadly.

Because he finally understood.

Claire had never needed to become better to deserve his love.

She had always been enough.

He was the one who failed to see it.

And somewhere above the clouds, on a route that no longer crossed his…

Claire looked through the cockpit window and smiled.

For the first time in years, the sky belonged completely to her.
