PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO NO LONGER NEEDED HIS APOLOGY

Laura Tang stood frozen in the hallway.

For five years, she had believed Elena Shen was gone forever.

A woman who disappeared into the dust of Africa.

A woman who had lost everything.

A woman who could never return to stand in front of Daniel Fu again.

But now…

Elena was standing there wearing a white doctor’s coat.

Not broken.

Not begging.

Not asking for forgiveness.

She was the person everyone in the hospital respected.

The director.

The chief surgeon.

The woman who had saved Daniel’s life.

Daniel, lying on the hospital bed, opened his eyes slowly.

The first person he saw was Elena.

For a moment, he thought he was dreaming.

—Elena…

His voice was weak.

Elena looked at the medical chart in her hands.

—Your blood pressure is stable.

—The surgery was successful.

—You need to rest.

Daniel stared at her.

Not at the doctor.

Not at the director.

At the woman he had abandoned five years ago.

—You really became a doctor here…

Elena didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t need his approval anymore.

Five years ago, she had wanted Daniel to see her value.

Now thousands of patients had already proven it.

That afternoon, Daniel’s parents arrived.

The moment they saw Elena, they stopped.

His mother covered her mouth.

—Elena…

She looked older.

Much older.

Five years ago, Daniel’s mother had stood beside him when he sent Elena away.

She had said:

—A woman who cannot admit her mistakes doesn’t deserve my son.

Back then, Elena had cried.

Now she only nodded politely.

—Mrs. Fu.

That simple greeting hurt more than anger.

Because it meant Elena no longer considered herself family.

Daniel’s father stepped forward.

—We thought you…

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

Dead.

Everyone thought she was dead.

But Elena only smiled.

—Many people did.

His mother lowered her eyes.

—We were wrong.

Elena looked at them quietly.

An apology after five years.

A little too late.

The next morning, Daniel received the news.

The acquisition contract between Fu Group and the medical center had been canceled.

His expression changed immediately.

—Why?

His assistant hesitated.

—Because the owner rejected the proposal.

Daniel frowned.

—Who owns the hospital?

The assistant looked at the document.

Then answered carefully:

—Shen Medical Holdings.

Silence.

Daniel slowly turned his head.

—Shen?

The assistant nodded.

—The founder is Dr. Elena Shen.

For several seconds, Daniel couldn’t speak.

The woman he thought had been sent away with nothing…

Was the person controlling the hospital his company desperately needed.

The woman he believed needed him…

Had built an empire without him.

That night, Daniel asked Elena to meet him.

She refused at first.

But because he was still a patient under her care, she agreed to a short conversation.

They sat in the hospital garden.

The same place where Elena used to rest after long surgeries.

Daniel looked at her for a long time.

—You hate me.

Elena shook her head.

—No.

He looked surprised.

—No?

—Hate requires emotion.

She looked at the flowers beside her.

—I spent all my emotions on you five years ago.

Daniel’s hands tightened.

—Elena, I was wrong.

The words finally came.

The words she once dreamed of hearing.

But now they meant nothing.

—Laura lied.

—I know.

—The cameras proved everything.

—I know.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was obvious.

—I saw the recording one month after you left.

Elena remained silent.

—My assistant found it when organizing the old house files.

His voice became hoarse.

—The entire time I thought I was punishing you for hurting someone.

—But I was actually destroying the person who loved me most.

The wind moved softly.

Elena listened.

But she did not comfort him.

Because five years ago, when she needed someone to listen…

He had refused.

Daniel lowered his head.

—After I found out the truth, I ended everything with Laura.

Elena looked at him.

—And?

He swallowed.

—And I searched for you.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

—Did you?

—For three years.

—You searched for three years.

—Yes.

She nodded.

—Good.

Daniel looked confused.

—Good?

—Because I spent five years rebuilding my life.

She stood up.

—You needed three years to find me.

—I needed five years to stop waiting.

Those words left Daniel completely silent.

The next day, Laura came to the hospital.

She was no longer the famous actress everyone admired.

Her career had declined after several scandals.

But she still carried the same expression.

The expression of someone who believed she could control the situation.

She found Elena in the office.

—You think you won?

Elena didn’t look up from the documents.

—I don’t know what you mean.

Laura laughed.

—Daniel still loves you.

—He came back to you.

Elena finally raised her eyes.

—That’s not a victory.

Laura froze.

—What?

—Someone returning after destroying you is not a victory.

Elena closed the file.

—The victory was surviving when he left.

Laura’s face changed.

Because she understood something.

Elena no longer saw Daniel as a prize.

And that was the one thing neither of them expected.

Three months later, Daniel was able to walk again with rehabilitation.

He visited the hospital every week.

Not as the powerful businessman.

Not as the man who once controlled Elena’s fate.

Just as Daniel.

One evening, he found her leaving the operating room.

—Elena.

She stopped.

—Yes?

He held a small box.

For a moment, Elena thought she knew what was inside.

A ring.

The same promise.

The same mistake.

But Daniel didn’t open it.

—I wanted to give this to you five years ago.

He looked down.

—But I don’t deserve to ask you again.

Elena remained quiet.

—I know you married someone else.

Her expression changed slightly.

Daniel smiled sadly.

—I found out.

—The man who stayed beside you while I was gone.

The man who supported you when I abandoned you.

He took a breath.

—I just wanted you to know…

—If I could return to that day, I would choose differently.

Elena looked at him.

The man she once loved.

The man who had broken her.

The man who finally understood.

But understanding did not change the past.

—Daniel.

—Yes?

—The hardest part wasn’t leaving you.

She paused.

—It was realizing I had already been alone while I was still your fiancée.

His eyes became red.

Elena walked away.

Not because she hated him.

Not because she wanted revenge.

But because some doors close permanently after they have been left open for too long.

And this time…

She was not the one waiting outside.
