Part 2: The Woman Who Woke Up Before He Could Destroy Her

I stared at the shareholder reorganization request on my screen.

Nathaniel’s name was there.

The man who kissed me goodbye every morning.

The man who told me I was the only person he trusted.

The man who slept beside me every night.

And the same man who was secretly preparing to take everything I had built.

For a few seconds, I felt something strange.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Relief.

Because the dream had given me something I never had before.

Time.

A chance to see the truth before it destroyed me.

I closed the document.

Then I smiled.

“Good move, Nathaniel.”

“Unfortunately, you were too late.”

I did not confront him.

That would have been the easiest thing to do.

The old Amelia would have thrown the phone on the table.

She would have demanded answers.

She would have cried and asked why.

But the woman who woke up at three in the morning was different.

I had learned something important.

People who prepare betrayal usually prepare explanations too.

If I confronted Nathaniel too soon, he would erase evidence.

He would change his strategy.

He would make himself the victim.

So I did something much more dangerous.

I acted like I knew nothing.

That afternoon, I called my lawyer.

Not the family lawyer.

Not someone connected to Nathaniel.

A new one.

Her name was Victoria Stone.

I sent her every screenshot.

Every message.

Every document I suspected.

She read everything silently.

Then she looked at me.

—Are you sure you want to do this?

I nodded.

—Yes.

—You understand that once you start investigating, your marriage may not survive?

I smiled faintly.

—Victoria.

I looked at the files.

—My marriage ended the moment he decided I was something he could transfer.

She understood.

The next few days were strangely normal.

Nathaniel continued pretending.

He brought me flowers.

He asked about my work.

He even cooked dinner one night.

The same man who was planning to take my company was now acting like the perfect husband.

It almost impressed me.

Almost.

During dinner, he looked at me.

—Amelia.

—Yes?

—Have you been tired lately?

I looked up.

—Why?

He smiled.

—You seem distracted.

A warning.

A test.

I lowered my eyes and picked up my glass.

—Maybe because I have a lot of work.

He relaxed.

—You should rest more.

I smiled.

How ironic.

The person causing my exhaustion was telling me to rest.

A week later, Victoria discovered something.

Something that made even her expression change.

—Amelia.

She placed several documents on the table.

—Nathaniel has been preparing this for months.

I looked down.

Share transfer agreements.

Private contracts.

A series of financial movements.

My stomach tightened.

The dream was not imagination.

It was a preview.

—How much was he planning to take?

Victoria looked serious.

—Almost everything connected to Hayes Media Group.

I remained silent.

Then I asked:

—And Chloe?

She opened another file.

—Chloe Brooks is not just an intern.

My eyes moved to her.

—Who is she?

Victoria hesitated.

—The daughter of Richard Brooks.

I froze.

Richard Brooks.

One of the biggest investors in the industry.

The same man who had tried to acquire my company three years earlier.

Victoria continued:

—Nathaniel was not only having an affair.

A pause.

—He was building a business alliance behind your back.

Everything became clear.

The affair.

The shares.

The transfer.

It was never only about another woman.

It was about replacing me.

The next morning, Nathaniel brought Chloe to my office.

I almost laughed when I saw her.

Pink dress.

Perfect smile.

Exactly like the dream.

—Amelia.

Nathaniel smiled.

—This is Chloe Brooks.

I looked at her.

The woman who believed she was about to inherit my life.

—Nice to meet you.

She smiled.

—I’ve heard a lot about you.

I almost asked:

“Good things?”

But I didn’t.

Because I already knew.

Nathaniel placed a hand on her shoulder.

A small gesture.

But one that revealed more than words.

—Chloe will help with the new restructuring project.

I nodded.

—Of course.

Nathaniel looked surprised by my calmness.

He expected jealousy.

Anger.

A confrontation.

He received nothing.

Because he didn’t realize something.

The person he was trying to defeat was no longer playing his game.

Three days later, Nathaniel finally made his move.

He came home with a folder.

The same folder from my dream.

My heart almost laughed.

Reality was copying the nightmare.

—Amelia.

He sat beside me.

—There are some documents I need you to review.

I took the folder.

Inside were the shareholder agreements.

Exactly what Victoria had warned me about.

Nathaniel watched my expression carefully.

—It’s just a normal company adjustment.

Normal.

Another useful word.

I looked at him.

—Did you already sign your part?

He paused.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

—Yes.

I nodded.

—Then I’ll review mine.

His smile returned.

He thought he had won.

He thought the next signature would complete his plan.

He didn’t know that earlier that morning, my lawyer had already filed a legal restriction preventing any unauthorized transfer of my shares.

He didn’t know the board had already received evidence of his conflict of interest.

He didn’t know Chloe’s father had received a copy of every message between them.

And most importantly…

He didn’t know I had been awake from the beginning.

That evening, Nathaniel received a call.

I watched his face change.

First confusion.

Then fear.

Then panic.

—What do you mean the board meeting was canceled?

Silence.

—Who authorized that?

Another pause.

His eyes slowly moved toward me.

For the first time, he looked at me differently.

Not like his wife.

Like an opponent.

I calmly continued drinking my coffee.

He hung up.

—Amelia.

I looked at him.

—Yes?

His voice became colder.

—What did you do?

I smiled.

The same smile he had never seen before.

—Nothing.

A pause.

—I’m just protecting what belongs to me.

His face hardened.

—You knew?

I placed the cup down.

—Since three in the morning.

The color disappeared from his face.

—What?

I leaned back.

—The night I checked your phone.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Because the man who thought he was secretly destroying my life finally understood.

The secret was never his.

It was mine.

I had known.

I had prepared.

And I had waited.

Two weeks later, Nathaniel lost his position at Hayes Media Group.

The board did not forgive betrayal.

Chloe disappeared from the company before anyone could question her.

The great plan they had built collapsed faster than they imagined.

As for me…

I kept my company.

My home.

My future.

Everything they thought they could take.

Months later, Nathaniel asked to meet.

I agreed.

Not because I wanted him back.

Because I wanted closure.

He looked different.

Less confident.

More human.

—I loved you.

I looked at him.

—Maybe.

His eyes lowered.

—You don’t believe me.

I shook my head.

—I believe you loved what I gave you.

A pause.

—But you didn’t love me enough to protect me.

He had no answer.

Because the truth did not need one.

I stood up.

And walked away.

That night, I returned home.

The same house.

The same company.

The same life.

But a completely different woman.

I thought about the dream that started everything.

The nightmare where I lost everything.

The woman crying on the floor.

The woman begging someone not to leave her.

She was gone.

Because when I woke up…

I didn’t just discover my husband’s betrayal.

I discovered myself.

And this time, I wasn’t the woman waiting to be chosen.

I was the woman who chose herself.
