PART 2: The Day Liam Realized He Lost Me

I thought leaving the Foster villa would be the hardest thing I ever did.

I was wrong.

The hardest thing was realizing that after four years beside Liam, I had become someone who needed his permission even to disappear.

The taxi stopped two streets away from the villa.

I didn’t ask the driver to wait.

I didn’t look back.

The place where I had spent four years of my life became smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror until it was just another building among thousands.

For the first time in years, nobody knew where I was.

Nobody expected me to wait.

Nobody expected me to smile.

Nobody expected me to return.

I rented a small apartment on the edge of the city.

The room was simple.

An old bed.

A small kitchen.

A window that looked toward another building.

It was nothing compared to the villa.

But that first night, lying alone in silence, I slept better than I had in years.

Because there was no need to wonder when Liam would return.

No need to guess his mood.

No need to ask myself whether I was important or just convenient.

The next morning, I went back to my old life.

I found a job.

I cut my hair.

I stopped wearing the clothes Liam chose.

I stopped checking my phone every few minutes hoping for a message that would never come.

Three weeks passed.

Then one month.

And Liam still didn’t appear.

I wasn’t surprised.

A man like Liam Foster didn’t chase what he believed would always wait for him.

Until the day he discovered something he had never considered.

I was no longer waiting.

It happened at a charity auction organized by Foster Group.

Liam arrived with Ava beside him.

The perfect image.

The powerful man.

The gentle protector.

The woman he had always wanted.

Everyone congratulated him.

Everyone told Ava how lucky she was.

Then the host announced the next donor.

“Emma Carter.”

The room became silent.

Liam turned around.

For the first time in a month, he saw me.

I wasn’t wearing expensive jewelry.

I wasn’t wearing the dresses he bought.

I wore a simple black suit.

My hair was tied back.

My expression was calm.

But I was no longer the woman who stood behind him.

I was standing on my own.

The host smiled.

“Miss Carter has donated the entire development project on West Avenue.”

People began whispering.

That project was worth millions.

Liam’s expression changed slightly.

Because he knew that name.

Years ago, before meeting him, I had inherited shares from my grandfather.

Small at first.

Almost meaningless.

But I had never touched them.

I had built my own foundation quietly.

While everyone believed Liam was the person who gave me everything…

I had always been capable of giving myself a future.

After the event, Liam stopped me.

“Emma.”

I looked at him.

He seemed different.

Not weaker.

Just confused.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”

“That you had all this.”

I smiled.

“You never asked.”

His jaw tightened.

“I thought you needed me.”

“I did.”

That answer surprised him.

“I needed you to love me.”

I paused.

“But you only liked needing me.”

Liam remained silent.

For once, he had no perfect response.

Ava appeared behind him.

“Liam, are you coming?”

He looked at her.

Then back at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Not because he had lost control.

Not because I had become successful.

Because he finally understood that the woman he called entertainment had been the only person who had loved him without wanting anything from him.

“I never thought you would really leave.”

His voice was quiet.

I nodded.

“That’s because you never thought I could.”

I walked away.

This time, he didn’t stop me.

Months later, rumors spread that Liam and Ava were no longer together.

People said he had changed.

That he worked less.

That he spent more time alone.

But I didn’t care.

Because my life had finally become mine again.

One evening, I received a letter from Liam.

No gifts.

No money.

No expensive apologies.

Just a handwritten page.

It said:

“I spent years believing you stayed because you had nowhere else to go.”

“I was wrong.”

“You stayed because you loved me.”

“And I lost you because I thought love was something I could always get back.”

I folded the letter.

Then I placed it in a drawer.

Not because I hated him.

Not because I wanted revenge.

But because some doors are not closed with anger.

They are closed when you finally understand that you deserve a different life.

The girl who entered Liam Foster’s villa with nothing had disappeared.

The woman who walked away carried something far more valuable.

Herself.
