PART 2: THE TRUTH THEY NEVER EXPECTED

The next morning, Megan arrived at my office expecting me to forgive her.

Instead, she found a cardboard box on her desk.

Her smile disappeared.

—What’s this?

I didn’t look up from my computer.

—Your belongings.

She stared at me.

—Olivia, you’re seriously firing me because of last night?

—No.

I finally raised my eyes.

—I’m firing you because I reviewed six months of your work.

Her face went pale.

Ryan appeared behind her.

—That’s enough, Olivia.

I turned toward him.

—You don’t work here.

His jaw tightened.

—I’m your fiancé.

—Not anymore.

I placed the engagement ring on the table.

The room became completely silent.

Megan looked between us.

—You can’t throw away five years because of a misunderstanding.

I almost laughed.

—The misunderstanding was thinking you were my friend.

Then I opened a folder.

Inside were printed emails, financial records and copies of documents.

—You altered client correspondence.

Megan stopped breathing.

—You submitted work under my name.

Her lips trembled.

—And you used my digital authorization on three documents I never approved.

Ryan stepped forward.

—Olivia, be careful.

I looked at him.

—Why?

His expression changed.

—Because accusations like these can destroy her career.

—Exactly.

For the first time, Megan looked frightened.

She whispered:

—You promised to protect me.

I froze.

Ryan immediately turned toward her.

—Megan, stop talking.

But it was already too late.

I heard everything I needed.

Not only had they been together.

They had been planning to use my reputation to hide Megan’s mistakes.

And the twelve-million-dollar case had been the perfect opportunity.

I stood up.

—Security is waiting outside.

Megan began crying.

Ryan grabbed my arm.

—Don’t do this.

I pulled away.

—You told me last night not to mix personal matters with work.

I pointed toward the door.

—So I’m not.

I handed the evidence to the firm’s compliance director.

Megan was escorted out.

Ryan remained standing there, staring at me as if he had finally realized he had lost everything.

—Olivia…

I shook my head.

—You didn’t lose me last night.

I walked past him.

—You lost me months ago.

Three days later, the investigation uncovered something even worse.

Megan hadn’t acted alone.

Someone inside the firm had been feeding her confidential case information.

And when I saw the name attached to the access logs, my hands went cold.

It wasn’t Ryan.

It wasn’t Megan.

It was someone I trusted far more than either of them.

Someone who had been quietly waiting for me to fall.

And suddenly, I understood why the twelve-million-dollar case had been so easy to win.
