I couldn’t move.
The words Daniel had just said kept repeating in my head.
“Nico was our son’s.”
Our son.
Two words that shouldn’t exist.
Because I didn’t have a son.
At least…
That was what I had believed for three years.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Laura.
Neither of them dared to speak.
“What did you say?”
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Daniel took a step forward.
“Clara…”
“Don’t call my name.”
He stopped.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
“Tell me the truth.”
“Now.”
The silence inside that apartment was suffocating.
Finally, Laura sat down on the sofa.
Her hands were shaking.
“I should have told you a long time ago.”
I looked at her.
“You should have.”
She lowered her head.
“Three years ago, before you met Daniel…”
I interrupted.
“No.”
My heart started beating faster.
“Before I met Daniel?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
And that reaction told me everything.
There was a part of my life I didn’t know.
A part everyone else knew except me.
“Explain.”
Daniel sat across from me.
“Five years ago, you had an accident.”
I frowned.
“I know.”
I remembered.
A car accident.
A rainy night.
A hospital.
Doctors telling me I was lucky to survive.
But after that…
There was a blank period.
Several months I could barely remember.
Daniel looked at me.
“You lost some memories.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“You forgot a lot of things.”
My fingers tightened.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
No one answered.
And that silence was the cruelest answer.
Laura started crying.
“Because the doctors said forcing you to remember could make things worse.”
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“So everyone decided for me?”
“Everyone decided what truth I was allowed to know?”
Daniel looked down.
“I was there when you woke up.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I was there.”
His voice became lower.
“You didn’t remember me.”
“At that time, we had already met.”
My breathing stopped.
“You mean…”
Daniel nodded.
“We were together before the accident.”
The room became completely silent.
I felt like the entire world had shifted.
Three years.
I thought I knew Daniel for three years.
But he had known me much longer.
“So why?”
I looked at him.
“Why did you pretend?”
His eyes were full of regret.
“Because after you woke up, you were different.”
“You were scared of everything.”
“You didn’t trust anyone.”
“And the doctors said you needed a peaceful life.”
I stared at him.
“Peaceful?”
My voice trembled.
“You call hiding my own life from me peaceful?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he knew.
He had crossed a line.
A line he could never undo.
Then Laura spoke.
“Nico was born after the accident.”
I turned toward her.
My heart stopped.
“What?”
She wiped her tears.
“You were pregnant.”
The room became silent.
“You were going to have a baby.”
My hands started shaking.
“No.”
I whispered.
“No, I would remember.”
Daniel looked at me with pain.
“You don’t.”
“That’s the problem.”
The memories started coming.
Not clear.
Not complete.
Just fragments.
A small hospital room.
Daniel holding my hand.
A tiny baby wrapped in a blanket.
My own voice laughing.
A name.
Nico.
I covered my mouth.
The pain came suddenly.
Like a door inside my mind had been forced open.
“I had a son…”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Where was I?”
His expression broke.
“You disappeared.”
The words hit harder than anything else.
“What?”
“After the accident, your family took you away.”
“You were sent overseas for recovery.”
“I tried to contact you.”
“I tried everything.”
“Then one day…”
He stopped.
“One day what?”
Daniel looked at Laura.

She continued.
“The hospital informed him that your family had decided you shouldn’t be disturbed.”
I felt cold.
“And my son?”
Nobody spoke.
I already knew the answer.
“You raised him?”
Daniel nodded.
“Only for a while.”
My eyes widened.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked away.
His silence terrified me.
“Daniel.”
His voice cracked.
“Nico was sick.”
“He needed treatment.”
“Treatment that required a lot of money.”
“I wanted to find you.”
“But your family blocked every attempt.”
I felt tears falling.
Not because I remembered everything.
But because I didn’t.
I had lost years of my own life.
And everyone around me had continued living it.
Then I looked at Laura.
“Why are you involved?”
She looked at Nico’s picture.
“Because I was his doctor.”
I froze.
“Doctor?”
She nodded.
“I treated him.”
“After he passed away, Daniel adopted Nico’s cat.”
“He couldn’t let go.”
My eyes moved toward the photo.
The cat.
The house.
The memories I never had.
Suddenly everything made sense.
The fingerprint.
The apartment.
The way Laura moved around like she belonged there.
Not because she was Daniel’s lover.
But because she was connected to the part of his life I had forgotten.
The part where I existed.
But that didn’t erase the betrayal.
I looked at Daniel.
“You let me believe I was just a girlfriend.”
“You let me think I was trying to enter your life.”
“When I was already part of it.”
His eyes turned red.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Afraid that if you remembered everything…”
He stopped.
“That you would hate me.”
I smiled sadly.
“Daniel.”
“You didn’t protect me.”
“You protected yourself.”
He lowered his head.
Because he knew I was right.
For three years, I thought he kept me outside his apartment because he didn’t love me enough.
But the truth was even more painful.
He kept me outside because inside those walls was a life I had lost.
A child.
A past.
A version of myself I could never get back.
I walked toward the door.
“Clara.”
I stopped.
“I never stopped loving you.”
I held the door handle.
“Maybe.”
I looked back at him.
“But love without honesty is just another way to control someone.”
Then I left.
This time, Daniel didn’t stop me.
Because he finally understood.
The woman who spent three years asking for access to his life…
Was the same woman who had once owned a place in it.
And now that she knew the truth…
She no longer needed his permission to leave.
But what Daniel didn’t know was that before I left the city, I received one more message.
A message from the hospital where my memories disappeared.
There was an old medical file attached.
And inside that file was one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“Patient Clara MartÃn’s memory loss was not caused only by the accident.”
Someone had intentionally hidden something from me.
And the name written at the bottom of the document…
Was a name I never expected to see.
